    Is the free mot check of ukgov accurate with miles and would it show up if a car was hackney/taxi or what check do I need for that as the model I'm looking at are ofter used for taxi... 58 plate superb

    Theres no record for Taxi MOT’s as its the local council that carries them out as far as I know.

    In a bit of a confusing situation here, hoping someone can make sense of it for me.

    I bought a vintage non-runner/rolling shell from the north last month under the presumption it had been registered there since 2020 and I wouldn't have to worry about duty/vat. The car was delivered but driver forgot to leave the logbook. I received it this week by post but last registration is actually in Wales. Far as I can tell the car was SORN'd in Wales and then sold to the North and never reregistered.

    I suppose my question is, how can I navigate customs on a shell bought from the North but registered to the UK?

    Does anyone know what VRT I can expect on a motorhome that I'm bringing down from NI?

    I have proof that it was there before 01st January 2021. I'm paying €18500, but they'll calculate VRT on the OMSP in ROI,

    It's a 2002 6 berth, 60k miles. I suppose the question is, what are they likely to consider as the OMSP? Done Deal isn't really

    So, if you import a qualifying car from NI (so no VAT or import duty), do you not have to go through the full complicated customs declaration online like when importing from mainland UK?

    So why don't they say 3 months instead of the vague 'reasonable time' ?

    It's like they think everyone's on the make when most just want a bit of car choice.

    Isn't there additional clauses to quality for this "reasonable time" of private ownership?

    An example:

    An electric car for sale in NI, privately.

    I checked the REG from ad thru various sites like MOT etc and it shows it was originally registered in the UK.

    Last MOT was in northern Ireland, and the current V5C was issue on say 1st April 2023.

    According to this page: https://www.revenue.ie/en/vrt/registration-of-imported-used-vehicles/registering-vehicles-from-ni.aspx

    Vehicles that were moved to NI prior to 1 May 2023 will also be subject to additional VAT requirements if imported into the State. These additional requirements must be completed prior to presenting the vehicle for registration.

    So this particular car, even if it's a private sale, will attract 23% VAT (and no VRT because it's electric and under certain thresold).

    Did I get this right?

    I'd say give them a call to make sure.

    Its a totally new ballgame for all cars from the 1st of May 24

    Basically once the car is in use up north for at least 3 months you can import without VAT

    But do they (private or dealer) who imports the car from UK to NI require to pay some tax under the new system there? Or is this a genuine Brexit benefit opportunity to NI folks?

    I think the dealers up there can no longer use the VAT margin scheme and have to pay VAT on the full sales price of their cars. The cars are basically treated as imports from UK to NI

    NI is a fairly limited market and is quite a bit more expensive than mainland UK. And even without the VAT implications a lot of cars are just uneconomical to import these days. Anything pre 2015 diesel is gone because of Nox, and anything relatively high in Co2 isn’t ideal either because of WLTP. I can’t see the recent VAT changes having much of an effect here on supply.

    So what if you have someone living in NI import a vehicle from the UK now, reregister it in NI and keep if for say 3 months. Can they then sell it to a ROI resident who can then import it to ROI say later this year. Does the new rules say that there is no 23%VAT or 10% Customs as it was registered in NI for a reasonable period of time? Does that work?

    The car needs to have been in private use. So judging by Revenues website they would need to at least MOT the car up there.

    Nope, importing a genuine NI car hasn’t changed. Its just VRT as normal.

    So no revenue online portal at all? Just go straight to NCTS website to make VRT appointment and pay them the VRT, show all paperwork and you get your Irish reg? If so it would be very tempting to just sell my car to someone in NI and buy it back after they MOT it and a "reasonable" period of time has passed.

    Is this the one you tried to declare yourself? Remember I told you you need to pay a professional to do it. It literally takes my customs broker 5 minutes and he sends me the customs document for VRT. It’s completely painless.

    The process taking a lot of time might turn out to be a blessing in disguise 😁

    So the answer to my question is yes then? None of this red tape for NI cars, straight to paying the VRT in the NCTS office?

    Yeah, but your car is on the VRT system now so your plan of ‘selling’ it back up North probably isn’t going to work, and you’ll also have to pay late fees from the day you originally presented it for VRT. Assuming you have already presented it? Even the fact you’ve attempted to declare it to customs may throw up some red flags. Probably not, but there’s always a chance.

    Reg will be different though, it will get a NI reg if registered up north. And no, haven't had VRT appointment yet. Booked it in the day I brought it home, but had to postpone the appointment several times because of delays with the import procedure.
