Yellow signs black symbols

Hi all,

I've looked this up but still don't know!

What do the yellow symbols with black shapes in them mean? My route (Tallaght/Clondalkin) has these on road signs. Small yellow square with either a smaller black square, a black circle or a black triangle in them?

It seems they're emergency routes but I don't really get it?

If the main route is blocked or closed, you follow those signs and they provide an alternative diversion route

But to where exactly? The same symbols are in Lucan as they are in Tallaght and Blanch, but then there's signs a few metres away with a different symbol?

The M50 signs were added after a woman was killed a few years ago and the motorway was closed for several hours. Thankfully I don’t think we’ve had an incident as bad as that since then.

Was that the one near the finglas exit during evening rush hour? I was heading northbound that day as I normally did and it was chaos.

I think it was the one southbound at J7 Lucan around dawn.

Ah ok so this logically makes sense. I've noticed them everywhere now and just couldn't figure out which symbol went where etc
