Obtaining Code 96 on B licence for towing trailers

On the RSA website, there is mention of a Code 96 for B licences which enables the driver to drive a heavier car/trailer combo than they could on a normal B licence.

    https://www.rsa.ie/services/learner-drivers/types-of-licences

I have found nothing online about how one would get this code 96 on an Irish licence. There were posts on this forum saying that it hadn't been implemented in Ireland and that the code could only be gotten in other EU countries?

In Germany, the situation is as follows:

    https://bmdv.bund.de/SharedDocs/EN/Articles/StV/Roadtraffic/driving-licence-categories-overview.html

"on 19 January 2013, a new Category B driving licence with code 96 was introduced, which is primarily of interest for operating smaller motor vehicle/caravan combinations. It can be issued for vehicle combinations formed from a motor vehicle of Category B and a trailer with a maximum authorized mass exceeding 750 kg if the maximum authorized mass of the vehicle combination is over 3,500 kg but not more than 4,250 kg. Code 96 may only be assigned if the applicant already holds Category B driving licence or has fulfilled the licensing requirements for this category. In order for code 96 to be entered into the Category B driving licence, only a driver training, but no test, is required"

Anyone know any more about the situation in Ireland?

I think that applies to EV vans, there was something about the weight limit being increased from 3.5t , to 4.25t (in the UK) for EV vans, cos of the battery weight.

Dunno if that was implemented here. , probably not. Just like B1 on a driver's licence.. it doesn't exist here, but it's listed.

The next eu directive on driving licences will have a few changes regarding vehicle weights, and extra categories for work vehicles and tractors.

Also changes regarding auto v manual licences.

With a lot of these changes, member states will have about 10 years to opt into them.. Ireland is usually slow to do so.

Give the RSA a shout to see how to get it. It's also on the NDLS website, but they just do what the RSA tells them.

    https://www.ndls.ie/about/licence-categories-and-codes.html#licence-codes

The OPs link has a 4.25t limit on the B licence for alternative fuelled commercial vehicles.

Contact the RSA and see what they say. I have done an additional driving test towing a trailer and I have that on my licence. Note that only certain trailer types are allowed during the test (a box trailer).
