She got out (was officially released) at 16, but ended back again. I am sure there is more to the story. Many people went to England at 16 back then, found employment and settled down.

But again, that's the state's responsibility, as it is now. There will always be bad parents. And at least some of the kids dumped into industrial schools etc were done so for extremely minor infractions.

Serena doesn't want the gold medical card, it's a Bertie Bowl she wants.

I think we need more of this ladies story. All shes said is she was born in a county home and spent 6 months there. Why should this entitle her to a medical card?

    Bad line….bad line

Which was facilitated and encouraged by the state. This is our national, patriarchal, church run state chicken coming home to roost. It had to happen sometimes. More power to these people.

There's so much rage in the country right now, I'd be thinking of self defence lessons if I was going to be a politician knocking door to door.

Being the State's responsibility is a relatively modern idea. In previous time it fell back to the family, which is what happened in most cases. This is partly were the idea of God Parents comes from, they are supposed to raise the child if something happens to the parents.

Pregnant by a priest, proper different toymes so to speak.

You'd want your head examined to be a politician going knocking on doors right now.

I completely get your point that care should have been better. But her family didnt have to disown her either - illegitimate children were bought up in their families at that time also. It didnt need to be this way at all. We absolutely should blame the church and the state but these ladies need to take time to consider their birth families role in this aswell.

On de other hand, you'd have to admire their gumption…………………………………………..after you're done beatin' der ass, of course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,298 ✭✭✭calculator

That's a bit too simplistic. Society essentially forced people, or some people anyway, to 'disappear' these children. It started with the church and the population in absolute fear of them. And that was all facilitated and even encouraged by the state. These people are the result of those policies.

Shouldn't they be suing the god parents so 😂

The politicians are only starting to realise that now, they have being living in a different world.

I don’t get animated by much but discussions like this make me so mad and sad.

The amount of lives that were utterly ruined. Not a single jot of humanity. The pain and torture landed on women and kids is unfathomable.

And for what? Evil men in skirts policing society on the guidance of fairytales.

The referenda results removed the cloth from many an ear.

I'm absolutely sure they have done FFS. They might not manage to squeeze their grief and issues into a 5 minute Joe Duffy conversation though. What they want is compensation for abuse at the hands of the state. And rightly so.

I agree with you. But these families who dumped their daughters in these places were definately not kind, compassionate people. The kind and compassionate helped their daughters and raised their grandchild and I know numerous examples of this happening. The cruel families left their daughters to rot. The families had a huge role in what happened.

Sadly some of those affected are blinkered thinking that their birth families wanted them and their mothers were forced into these homes. Sometimes the only people 'forcing girls into homes' were families. This needs to be awknowledged also.

I’d be very of the mind that families were on board alright but only because the power the church had. It was literally beaten into them to be virtuous and how being of ill repute will get you to hell.

If priest started coming to doors nowadays to collect a child born out of wedlock, firstly you die laughing at the thought and then you’d tell them explicitly to FRO. It was a different story 50-60 years ago.

That said I’m sure there were kids/mothers saved from the laundries by family that would have pushed back or hid the fact.

I can barely remember the name of a movie that I watched the weekend,

But can remember the landline number from 30 years ago,

My clock card number from a job i had 35years,

And the number bus i got to school 40 odd year ago

You deserve compo/redress/poundo'flesh from that school

    …..and that job

I can remember my number that I was called plus family members and the phone number from the place I lived over 50 years ago.

Nothing odd about it at all.

The phone number allowing for the added number that came about since then doesn't exist.

Maybe I'm getting you wrong but kids were numbers. The government paid institutions to care for kids and also council charged parents if they could afford it to pay for their children in care in these places.

It was a big money making thing for the church.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,533 ✭✭✭Jeff2

Basically the more kids the church got into places the more money they made.

Does anyone think for second the church was doing this for a good cause rather than money.

It made them money and they would put people against people on their alter because you had child outside wed.

The nuns arrived my home in a car and ran over a hen and killed it of course.
