I can't see why they would start Ross against Leicester unless the plan was to start him against LAR.

On the Rugby Weekly podcast Bernard Jackman mentioned that this fixture has the potential to break the Leinster squad if they lose. That we can't beat them in a knockout game on the fourth time of trying would devastate them. I wouldn't go that far, but there's definitely the threat of the season being derailed if we don't get to the semi final.

The game will depend on match ups. We need Doris to get one over on Alldritt. In the last two finals the latter has performed better. But Doris has outperformed him twice in a row in Ireland/France games. So we know he can do it.

Henshaw might be our most important player on Saturday. It looks like Ringrose will be unavailable so Osborne will take his place. The majority of the defensive work then falls to Robbie.

I think it has worked. Just from an Irish standpoint, attendances for league games are up under the new fixture schedule due to first team players being on show.

I was thinking about it this morning, Doris seems to be a bit off the boil at the moment. Playing well but not up to his usual heights

To me I would put Conan at 8, maybe Doris to 6 and then depending on how Conners/VDF is playing have them at 6.

Baird to spring from the bench

Moloney and Big Joe in second row

In centre, if RIngrose is out then put Henshaw at 12 and Osbourne at 13, Ngatai is a big miss I feel for this game as well as Ringrose.

Rest I can't see any big surprises, Ross at 10 to answer any question marks over his head

The press lap up the ROG in Cork, I couldn't give a sh*t if he flew into Timbucktoo

Did they say the same last year when Toulouse booked out the hotel Ireland use for a week before the game? or that Toulouse had booked it the year before??

Its the press running around after ROG, let them.

Easy tiger. I was merely observing the fact that the posters on this forum have been discussing it. That collective being 'our'.

I actually feel really bad for LARs travel arrangements.

Imagine having to be far, far away from home in a barely developed part of the world straight after spending a week in South Africa?

Agree. It's the safer approach. I just think Harry has a better chance of opening them up. This season is the first time I've seen the potential people in the know have referenced.

45,000 tickets sold in less than 72 hours is Incredible. Especially considering that there was a match at the Aviva last weekend.

I feel Leinster will win this week-end , but not sure about 8 point favourites though…

I couldn't care less about their antics, but they're definitely in my head. I'll be an inconsolable mess if we lose again.

I'll be devastated losing! It's the hope that kills me.

    Not too confident without JR!

I don't think Ross is the safer approach this time. His kicking OTT is off his usual accuracy. His kick to touch are also not finding enough distance. Even his trademark kick-pass is out of whack. It also looks like he is carrying an injury. He cant tackle at the moment and looks low on confidence.

Harry on the other hand is in good form overall and looks good OTT.

There is any number of reasons that he started over Harry against Leicester. a. squad rotation. b. he needed a game to find form. he didnt find it! c. didn't want to risk Harry from the start. d. knew they could beat Leicester in 4th gear.

starting ross in that game seemed like getting minutes into him to start this week to me.

Rugby Weekly Extra have a French journalist that covers La Rochelle on today's podcast.

Interestingly he thinks they're playing quite poorly, relying on maybe 20 minutes of good play per game to get them through. He speculates that their mentality isn't what it was. They had poor patches across the last few seasons and won the Champions Cup anyway. But this season the issues are more pronounced.

Although, I disagree with their supposition that La Rochelle are underdogs for this game. They're double European Champions that have won 3 of the last 4 games between the sides.

Casey and Murray had a right love in on ROG, quelle surprise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,972 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Theres nothing wrong with that. He's an Irishman, from their home province, that has coached a team to successive Champions Cups.

They've been very even in their praise for both sides.

If we loose I think it derails our hopes in URC.

Leinster are 8 pts favourites. That makes LaRochelle underdogs. If you don't think that's the case bet on la rochelle. Easy money.

i honestly really like leinster in this. Only one major injury, they aren't playing quite as well as last year imo but la rochelle are playing a good bit worse, and also at home.

I would be pretty surprised if they lost.

‘We’ll take any support we can!’ – La Rochelle enjoying Cork welcome as key trio fit for Leinster

Don't buy 'break the squad' or that it will 'devastate them' - if that was going to happen it would have been after losing the final at home last year after being so far ahead. Most of that team then went and got knocked out in the QF for so if those combined losses didn't break them then a QF loss in the CC, where there is far less pressure and focus, will not.

The very recent narrative was that Leinster couldn't beat LAR and now after they went to their home and did that in the rain and down key players a few months ago the goal posts have quickly been shifted to they 'can't beat them in a knockout' and 'cant beat them when it matters'.

If Leinster win at the weekend it will be just one of three steps they need to take to get to their main goal. The same media heads who are building LAR as potential to 'break the squad' will again move the goal posts and say the same thing when it comes to a loss in the semi or final.

It is part of the pressure of being the most successful Irish side, while the media will coddle other provinces and pat them on the head for even failing to do the bare minimum in Europe.

Its part of the pressure of being the irish side with a massive wage budget and almost the entire ireland squad.

People expect you to win for good reasons. That pressure is normal.

Edit: hyperbole obviously on ireland squad, its 19/33 i think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,349 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

That is pretty much the point I was making.

Being expected to win and losing the odd game each season against good teams is also normal, especially when they are by the smallest margins.

It is those who are making it out that a loss would 'break the team' who have gone way into hyperbole.

Well yea break the team is obvious nonsense.

But this version of leinster has definitely underachieved silverware wise so the expectation to win the tournament isn't crazy imo.

Interestingly he thinks they're playing quite poorly,

I mean, they quite clearly are. But those 20 minute bloody bursts they are capable of are still there.

Leinster #1 goal and expectation every year is winning the CC. Any time they miss out on it it is seen internally and externally as underachieving.

However, losing out to a fantastic team by the tiniest margins is very different than going out to a middling team by double digits and should be treated that way.

It isnt the end of the world for either LAR or Leinster to lose to the other.
