Recommend a robot lawnmowe? C.1 acre, fairly flat garden. The ride on has given up, so time to decide what to do. We are surrounded by pine trees, so branches and debris a possible issue. Is there such a thing that can work away with the odd small twig getting in the way, or do those robots still need pristine lawns to begin with?

i'd appreciate any feedback at all.

Weibang are industrial strength no nonsense construction, the opposite end of the scale to the Woodies own brand pro lawn, (not to be confused with the Topline retailed Proplus, which are a notch above in the quality stakes). the only thing going for that pro lawn it is it's Chinese made Honda engine and whopping big cut of 56cm, but expect frustration in the future looking for parts.

Webb are similar pattern construction mower, but with a bit more pedigree and backup, and are very good value for money in the Coop stores.

Castelgarden/Stiga mowers are well engineered and well supported with parts and dealers. Solid choice.

I have a weibang 537 shaft driven mower it's a fine machine, loncin engine arguably better than Briggs I would say, never an ounce of trouble with it in 3 yrs of heavy use, all parts available off shelf from my local dealer if needed and if anything it's cuts high grass better than my ride on mower ever did, yes it takes a bit longer but only needs cutting few times a year so works out better for me, I would definitely recommend it only thing is it's a heavy machine if you ever going to be lifting it in/out if your car etc you will need help.

Rideon stihl/viking 6112 turns over some times it. has a flashing seat icon error... When I don't sit on seat , seat icon is solid ,when I sit it flashes error.. I tested the seat sensor and wiring itappears to work OK when isolated..

Considering failing to turn over and cutting out immediately I think there might be loose earthing on seat connection, or maybe control board connector

just browsing through some of the threads and two aspects of what people are saying are (1) cutting big areas (2) and as a result a grass disposal problem arises.
SO, one might consider the following approach as a PARTIAL SOLUTION. Only cut half of the proverbial acre. One could cut twice around the perimeter and develop a few ‘looped walks/paths through the ‘acre’. One might leave an uncut metre or two around trees/shrubs.

    So end result would be:-

    (1) less energy used re petrol, electricity! Man/woman power

    (2) Sometime saved for other things

    (3) Less CO2 produced

    (4) More CO2 absorbed - by uncut grass,

    (5) encourages biodiversity via more insects, wild flowers, etc.

    (6) mini looped walks right outside one’s front door.

when did we decide , almost as a nation ,that it is highly desirable / the done thing/what’s expected of us/ something about them that keep a perfectively manicured lawn - each blade of grass being the same length/etc,/ etc/etc

The above suggestion may not be for everybody with a lawn but if a few took it on board others may follow. IMO it is the healthy option that is MORE environmentally friendly than the current strategy

With a lot of grass the obvious solution is to cut the grass near the house very regularly and reduce the cutting frequency and increase height of cut as you get further away from the house.

Wake me up when it's all over.

    Hi guys,

My self propelled mower has finally just about given up so I’m looking for a replacement. Been half considering a ride on for years. I haven’t a huge area (about 1500m2) but will be adding an almost similar area to it in a year or two. Can’t go above €3k unless I can justify a bit extra.

Was considering a Castelgarden XDC 150 HD. Would anyone have any opinions of this choice or maybe an alternative?

Your future 3000 m² is a decent area, ¾ acre. The Castelgarden will do the job, though a little narrow at 84cm, 33". This Alko Solo is a robust built 93cm 36.6" cut and is for the same money in the coop stores at the moment

Have a fifteen year old ride on (Craftsman LT200), starts fine, runs fine when cutting, misfires when not cutting and will eventually cut out if left idling no matter the idling speed, is this a fuel issue such as dirty fuel or clogged fuel filter?

have any of you any hassle with keeping deck right. I’ve a castle garden here and I took off the deck every year and cleaned it and painted it. There’s a couple of holes in it now I’ll have to put fillers in and paint over.
it has 15 years cutting done.
they will only last so long I suppose.
do ye clean your deck after every cut

Most likely, idle jet is blocked. Clean out the bowel first. There's an idle mixture adjustment jet somewhere on the carb, with a thumbscrew or flathead screwdriver slot. Find this when idling, open it a bit might clear it, or when stopped unscrew completely and blow a bit of air back in. Screw back by the same amount of turns and start. Correct setting is when increasing the mixture begins to slow the idle speed as it becomes enriched. If that doesn't work, you can remove the carb and jet any ports and holes you see with aerosol cleaner like brake clean or egr clean

Sure, we all do, after every cut. Well, we mean to, but the match kicks off in 5, so do it tomorrow. Maybe. And scape and paint end of season, or maybe after Xmas... or maybe when we take it out from where it was last stopped in October. Sure, you know yourself!

true. It’s hard to find time for everything. I was mulching with my one for years and I’m going back to boxing the grass. Too much mulched grass getting walked in the house and too much grass sticking to the deck and wheels. I don’t think we have the climate for mulching being honest and never will.

I have to buy a self-propelled mower over the weekend, narrowed it down to these 3, al-ko is leading at the moment, any thoughts? I have around 550m2 to cut 90% of lawn is 20 degree slope 10% 30 degree slope, getting a petrol strimmer too.

So I'm looking for something light enough, got a lend of a fairly high up the range Weibang to use last year and at 50kg it was pretty hard work on those gradients. I also read plastic collectors are better for wet grass pick up which can only be a good thing is this country.

    €595 - Plastic collector, 51cm deck, 36kg, Honda GCVx170

    Negative - has steel deck

    €630 - 53cm deck, 31.5kg, composite deck (no rust)

Negative - cloth collector, not a honda engine

    €500 - plastic collector, 46cm deck, 26kg!, composite deck

Negative - down on power, not a honda engine, smaller deck

These are contractor quality, 2 grand, but I seen one in Newbridge hire for a good bit less, I think 1800, but can't quite remember. They also had a massive 56cm cut Active brand semi commercial, demo model for €790. The one left in the picture.

further issue now, engine won't turn over even by hand, if i remove the spark plug it will turn over, i believe this is a compression issue, is this fixable via changing carburetor as I have seen in some videos online, the head gasket was changed last year, always well maintained, or is this a bigger issue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,242 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

This is a possible but quite rare cause

Wake me up when it's all over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,644 ✭✭✭deezell

Can you rotate it by hand by putting a wrench or socket on the top end of the crankshaft? It doesn't sound good. Compression would nevet be so great as to prevent hand turning slowly, but decompression engines as the Con Op says would be harder to crank, if the decompression mechanism breaks. It can break the camshaft. Incorrect sparkplug length would foul the valves or piston depending on the engine, but you'd know if you'd done that, put back a wrong plug. (I done this aged 10, bent a valve on our walk behind. Never told the old fella, he just assumed it broke down)

I was thinking it wouldn't be good news, i'll drop it to local garden centre, what's best case scenario here, new engine?????????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 224 ✭✭bfclancy2

Just to update, went home yesterday and she turned over no problem, then started up no problem, then oil came out from every orifice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,644 ✭✭✭deezell

Sounds like oil had seeped into the piston chamber, causing hydro lock. Did you have it tilted over on its side by any chance? Or maybe overfilled it with oil?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 224 ✭✭bfclancy2

it would be tilted over when cleaning under the deck after a cut but for no longer than ten minutes or so, oil would have been at appropriate level, i'd be diligent on that, before she locked up she wouldn't have been tilted in the preceding 2-3 weeks

Stihl are premium products, there will be no shoddy engines used. Best is relative, Honda and Briggs manufacture some of their engines in China in order to compete in the middle market. Briggs is not the all American company it was, it went bust and was acquired eventually by Sammon enterprises, a conglomerate which makes everything, and nothing, except money.
