And if initial reviews are to be believed, this Wages of Fear remake is supposedly horrendous. So bad in fact I'm now perversely curious, against all my better judgement.

Weird to see Will Forte star in another Ireland located story; he was in Extra Ordinary from a few years back.

Best comment from that link is "Wicker Man meets Father Ted".

    Based on a true story*

    *Overheard in a pub

That's as Irish as you will get so they nailed it.

Almost got a Mississippi Burning vibe from it.

He was in another Irish thing with Maxine Peake a few years back too. Can't remember the name of it, Run and Jump, maybe?

Reminds me of the New Zealand comedy/drama 'Deadloch', just using a podcasting conceit rather than detectives on a weird case. Like Deadloch, could be a lot of silly fun- poking fun through exaggerating prejudices etc. Looks like there could be a lot of eye-rolling as well though - throwing in make-uppy traditions, coz like, we're all a bit mad here. Definitely give it a look though.

Lastnight, I watched "No Escape", starring Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan. I must say it's one of the best things I've seen on Netflix in some time. I think it was originally released in 2015 but it must have been with little fanfare because I never heard of it till now.

Anyway, highly recommend it. It's a good old fashioned edge of the seat thriller. It's actually quite relentless in its pacing from start to finish. Wilson is very good in a role (ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances) that you wouldn't typically see him in.

I watched The Block Island Sound and was pleasantly impressed by it. It's a psychological horror film about a group of siblings struggling to understand the circumstances surrounding a family tragedy on the island where they grew up; the writing & use of sound are both strong, and the performances consistently good. It reminds me in some ways of YellowbrickRoad, and also (if you're in any way interested in watching it, don't look at the spoiler until after you've seen it):

    Nope

Same with wild mountain thyme, young ones dressed in shawls when it's supposed to be modern Ireland. Absolute rubbish that movie was, what they had on Walken to partake I'd love to know.

That was really good. Thanks.🔫🔫🔫💪 😋

Walken is the only one involved in that that can be forgiven - maybe he knows next to nothing about Ireland. Maybe it was just a paycheck.

It is everybody else that should questioned, especially Blunt and Dornan.

Glowing review from the BBC for Andrew Scott's Ripley. Just added, looking forward to watching it

I looked at a few more reviews of Ripley...

Guardian - Andrew Scott is absolutely spellbinding

Independent - Andrew Scott is all wrong for this otherwise decent Netflix adaptation

Irish Independent - Andrew Scott mesmerises as best Ripley of them all

Variety - Andrew Scott Is Utterly Charmless

Not sure I've ever seen such wildly contrasting opinions 🤣

Scott sometimes seems similar to Timothee Chalamet to me in style.

Undoubtedly talented but often so understated it almost seems out of place and I start to wonder what all the hype is about.

Ripley looks good. Added to My List.

I watched this last week. I had never heard of it either. Simple enough storyline, but it's oh so tense.

I recently watched another thriller of Owen Wilson a few weeks ago. It's a bit of an oldie - film made over 20 years ago. It's called Behind Enemy Lines. If you liked No Escape, you'd like this one too. Similar enough story line.

Speaking of Irish talent, also watched Good Luck to you Leo Grande last night.

About a widow, played by Emma Thompson, employing the services of a male escort, our own Daryl McCormick.
It’s basically the two of them in a hotel room for the entire film but thought they both played it very well.

Going a bit back but yeah you're right

Gosh, so three Irish flicks? Forte must have some connection here, or else just really loves the country & coming here for a filmshoot / holiday…

Yep, I remember seeing Behind Enemy Lines when it first came out! And yes, Wilson's character in this movie reminded me a bit of his performance in that one. Gene Hackman was in that movie too if memory serves, possibly one of his last big roles.

Behind enemy lines and No Escape are 2 very good Owen Wilson films. Don’t think BEL’s is on Netflix.

Apologies. You are correct. I overlooked the fact that the thread heading is Netflix recommendations. I streamed it from somewhere.

Directed by a Dundalk man, he also went on to direct The Omen remake and Die Hard 5.

This is not a stirring endorsement of anyone's career, lol. Though Behind Enemy Lines was entertaining enough, what little I remember of it.

Scoop is a new film on Netflix its a whole pile of nothing dont waste your time.

Ripley is aesthetically pleasing black & white film noir. Scott is a very menacing Ripley worth a look but slow. Italy 1960's is very well done

Laid up with flu all this week and been catching up on Netflix. 3 Body problem is excellent and The Signal is very good. Also watched the Murdaugh murders, a southern scandal which was fascinating. I was aware of the story to some degree from the odd snippet of news over the last couple of years, but not the full story. An excellent documentary, very well put together.

Any other good documentaries you’d recommend?

    You watched the Untold episodes?

    All excellent.

I looked over the last few pages but didn't see it mentioned.

All 8 seasons of Dexter were added to Netflix last weekend. The first 4 seasons are fantastic TV.

And anyone curious to belatedly check out the show - stop when Season 4 end; don't even watch the back 4 seasons cos ye GODS you'll not find a show whose quality drop was so extreme as Dexter's.

Good to know thanks, just started watching it for the first time and knew it turned to crap at some point but thought it was just the final season.

From what I recall Seasons 5 and 6 were definitively not-great but just about watchable; 7 was bad that made a really bizarre choice, but 8 borderline abominable. Throughout that back half the concept hit breaking point re. credibility & maintaining the inability of the cops to realise Dexter was the killer. So stick with seasons 1 to 4 and walk away knowing it as a great show lol
