I've never begrudged anyone anything so her looking at or buying an expensive house means nothing to me.

What I really dislike is the arrogance and distain these people are showing towards the PAC committee, towards the staff in rte who never get paid the big salaries and the tv licence/tax payers.

There is seemingly no accountability. They can just wander off and with a casual wave refuse to come before PAC and answer questions.

    No morals. No responsibility.

I’d suggest that most staff in RTE are paid better and have better conditions than the ‘going rate’ and conditions in similar concerns.

I wouldn’t be too worried in that regard RC.

I heard a caller on my local radio station stating he went to court due to no licence and had it thrown out.

He stated that seeing that there is no contract or agreement to pay you have no obligation. Also he said he stated he only used the TV for dvds and he asked for proof that he was watching live TV.

I looked at three of them and I thought that they were childish to put it mildly- especially to the ‘standard’ set by Michael Murphy . I saw the mobile phone, the windmill in the estate and the holiday package ones - just to see what they were about. I would have sent the production company back to the ‘drawing board’.

Oliver Callan and his Callan Kicks should also be sent back to the drawing board. He is trying to ‘mimic Scrap Saturday and he is not even close to a ‘patch’ on it

There would be a huge question for the Judge and his interpretation of the act. The act doesn't state anything about use of the device.

According to entertainment.ie's TV guide, this Saturday's edition of the Tommy Tiernan show is the 13th in the current series. As far as I know, the only time when a series of that show has exceeded 12 episodes was in the first half of 2021 - and we know the reasons for that. Someone in this forum told me that the series that is shown early in the year is pre-recorded in October and November of the previous year.

Popularity. RTÉ have also ditch the other chat shows that they had surrounding Tommy. I can't see Angela Scanlon returning and I have a vague memory of some other shite chat show they did, and it won't be coming back or else I just imagined bad chat shows from RTÉ. I think DWTS had 12 episodes this season which is up from 10 last year.

I can imagine Tommy shows is pre-recorded in advance, also as mentioned holding off broadcasting a programme seems to allow RTÉ save money!

What is it about Tiernan's show that makes it so popular? He's not a good interviewer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,280 ✭✭✭Damien360

Depends on the guest. He tends to get at least one good one each week.

There have been quite a few really interesting interviews. They don't follow a format like tubs crap. Nothing about your link to Ireland or where you had a pint or the book you are flogging or your social media campaign. I find it's a journey with Tiernan each time trying to figure out the guest's story.

Even with the cuts that RTÉ announced a few months ago, I cannot envisage RTÉ having enough money to meet the quota for home-produced drama next year unless change to the funding of public-service broadcasting takes place before the general election.

By the way, with the drop in licence-fee income, how did RTÉ afford to have Dancing With the Staff this year?

I've just read that one of Tiernan's guests on last night's edition was a death doula. Who the hell would want to watch or listen an interview with someone who has that occupation?!

There's plenty to complain about RTE but Tommy Tiernan's show is one of the better programmes on offer.

Its not the typical stage-managed PR exercise for people to plug something. It seems to lead to more organic conversations and you get something more interesting, like the above, as opposed to bubble-dwelling celebrities churning out carefully-crafted answers you can play bingo with.

Sure the government are just going to give them a top up.

You know that RTÉ are looking at spending 2.5m on Social Media, Photography, Market Research and Consultations on strategy etc over the next 3 years. Can you tell me how much the expect to save in their NEW DIRECTION?

He's not the best TBH but I think that's just an opinion, he's already just started repeat guest which makes little sense to the format.

As was stated in the following article last November, there are conditions attached to the interim funding that RTÉ receives.

So? You think the government is going to allow RTÉ to die?

The government, media and academia are all on the same page. I will let you get to that page without my help, and then suggest that nothing is changing.

I posted that link to prove my point that there are conditions attached to the interim funding. So I wasn't looking for your help to get to that page!

    What the government/media/academics think: -

    1. RTÉ's problem is an existential crisis caused by the archaic license fee.
    2. RTÉ's governance issues are caused by the existential crisis.
    3. RTÉ is public service broadcasting and there are no other alternatives to RTÉ.

Why things will not change: -

    1. It is clear to most that RTÉ have cause the majority of their own problems
    2. Governance issues aside RTÉ is mismanaged
    3. There are serval alternatives to what public service broadcasting is

Just read what Paschal Donohoe says in that Article: -

    1. I do not believe that any government should be involved in allocating and determining how much money a state broadcaster should get.
    2. I believe we should have a method of collecting this that delivers a compliance rate that is at least in line if not ahead of where we are at the moment.
    3. There’s still a very large amount of revenue coming in from the television licence at the moment

    He also states: -

that the plan put forward by Mr Bakhurst is “clearly going in the right direction”, and said government would be looking for “assurances that it is being implemented”.

He really says nothing about conditions rather he is talking about independence while the article suggest a few of the strategy points from RTÉ's new direction : -

The conditions requested are based on RTÉ's new direction, according to the article they are : -

    1. salary price cap of €250,000 and up to 400 job cuts over four years
    2. RTÉ digital stations and plus-one TV channels are due to be axed,
    3. there will be a greater reliance on independent productions
    4. savings of ~10m

None of this reflects the issues with in RTÉ. It is largely a rehash of RTÉ 2024 Revised strategy some of which included:-

    1. Reduce salaries of top earners (executives to take pay cut)
    2. RTÉ digital radio stations to be axed
    3. Sale of land and RTÉ Guide
    4. savings of ~10m

    Then I guess it's window-dressing on the government's part.

As for the idea of selling the RTÉ Guide to a different owner, did RTÉ really think that anyone would be interested in taking it over from RTÉ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭Shan Doras

A couple of publishers were interested in licencing the name but nobody wanted to have to take on all the staff and pay them the same perks that they get at rte.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I spent some of the Easter weekend listening to 2fm and I noticed that their news service has been dramatically reduced, No news during their 7/9am weekend breakfast show for example. So the claim that an number of posters make about 2fm getting no cuts whatsoever is untrue
