Has anyone got the book and card?

The card is only valid for 5 years while the book is valid for 10 years?

Doesnt make any sense

Get both. The card is very handy. It's cheaper to get the card when bundled with the book.

Card is handy for portability, but I always have my regular passport on me, in case there are issues with the card. I've found in virtually all airports, the card doesn't work with automated gates.

You'd think it'd work perfectly, right? In my experience, I have got it to work but only when there was a staff member nearby who would advise "upside down, barcode-thingy facing forwards", or similar. Any time I've gone through, there's only been instructions for how to insert the passport book. Usually if the queue at the regular passport control counters isn't too bad, I just go there rather than have the hassle of working out how to use the card in the auto gates.

Card works fine at the egates in Dublin. Place card in the top left corner of the glass plate of the scanner. Photo side facing up.

I've travelled around Europe with just the passport card for the last couple of years with no issues. So much handier to just keep it in a small wallet.

One negative is that even as they may be issued at the same time, they’ll have different numbers so if you book a flight using passport book number & travel with only passport card, you’ll have a problem

It's not a problem, I do this all the time. Passport cards don't work for Aer Lingus online check-in so I use the passport book number instead. Gate agents are only concerned with verifying that the name on your passport matches the boarding pass and that it hasn't expired. They are not checking the passport number.

It's not a passport and has a different expiry date. You can't have two documents with the same number. It's more like an EU national identity card.
