Yep, peak virtue signalling to consider an unmarried parent and their children as a family. Absolutely outrageous carry on.

Indeed and the silencing by government of community and voluntary groups

in receipt of state funding was chilling. It is a sign of what to

expect when the new Hate speech laws come into effect which effectively

will mean no comment will be allowed unless it conforms with government

    thinking.

For that alone, O'Gorman should resign nevermind the plethora of shyte he's been responsible for.

"What does that even mean, vetting?"

Opposition parties are trying to take the high ground now. They all said the wording was wrong but like McDowell said they all followed the government like sheep.

Is it not a little too early to be counting our chickens? I did vote no\no, and am more optimistic now than I was yesterday, but I've only seen a few results in (could be googling poorly, granted). Is there a decent live feed somewhere?

A single parent and their children are a family, who is saying otherwise?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,485 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Well some people think family they think nuclear family unit.

Personally I think it is not the definition of the “family” that has changed for others. But the definition of “broken family” a spouse leaves/abandons/divorce s etc.

For lower socioeconomic backgrounds in particular this creates major issues for the children.

The lone parent group cleverly tries to rebrand it as “one family”. I suppose it sounds nicer for them a nice white lie.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

A woman or a man are both equally entitiled to undertake duties inside and outside of the home.

We dont need a change in the constitution to tell us what is already so.

And how exactly is a single parent family to be considered an issue of gender equality?

Why not call the referendum "family structure" or "parental rights" or even "durable relationships".

No, they went with two buzzwords. Gender and equality, on womens day.

They went with greasy used car sales tactics, because they have contempt for us and see us as complete thicks.

You are in for a year of confusion sir.

This has never had any anything to do with right wing or conservativism. We have gone too far the other way and normal people are rejecting it!!

Here's a difficult bone to swallow for some, in an age when trust in media is collapsing, Gript media were the one entity that has demonstrated it is somewhat aligned with the public mood....it is you and your type that are out of step!!

Why should we care about what 'the rest of the world thinks'? The majority of the rest of the world live in relative poverty and would kill to be in a position where their state can blow tens of millions on a poorly worded and pointless set of amendments to their constitution.

You might find it grim but it's been entirely predictable.

Would make you wonder how reliable polls on government support are too

So should Leo be worried about a push against him after this or will they wait until after the local elections or a general one later this year (we all know it's coming)?

I dont think this is a major issue. The turnout shows most people didnt care one way or the other.

Much bigger fsctors at play for the govt in the form of Health, Housing, Immigration etc.

Varadkar just conceded defeat on RTÉ.

Whatever way you voted, this referendum was utterly pointless. The real referendum we need in this country, one that has been promised and is long overdue, is on the diaspora being allowed to vote in the presidential elections. We are one of the very few western countries that doesn’t allow our citizens abroad to have a voice when choosing the head of state. Major implications for a future border poll as well, as the Irish citizens living in the northern region of Ireland will be able to vote for the Irish president.

It's so funny that some deluded nutjob in government thought the referendums would pass on "International Womens Day"

Newsflash- no one harly knows, or could even give a rats-ass about that dumb day that is only celebrated in the leftist echo-chambers of Twitter.

There's another option as well, people who educated themselves on the issues and voted accordingly. If anything, this is another example of Irish voters understanding the core issues involved in the last 3 referendums, the marriage, repeal, and now this.

Anyone claiming this is some sort of far right victory or due to the far right is completely deluded.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

I never said it is. And I still don't know how recognisesing unmarried parents is "peak virtue signalling".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,046 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

In fairness to them, I don't see how they could have campaigned for a No / No vote, no matter what their reservations. It would not have been a very good look (this type of referendum is always going to be problematic for any opposition party, as they don't draw up the wording).

How is that an important referendum? Michael D absolutely romped home in the last presidential election, what difference would diaspora votes from overseas make?

And how would you even implement this? In 2024 we are still using pencils and paper in school halls. There isn't a chance our civil service could implement a reputable online voting system. E-voting machines spring to mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,629 ✭✭✭Augme

So a woman who was raped, became pregnant and decided to have the child should have to marry her rapist so her and her child can be considered a family? Riiiiight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Kumejima

if this results proves that Ireland is still a "deeply conservative country" in your words, then wouldn't this vote represent.... the will of the people?

What lessons need to be learned if the electorate voted in a way that reflects their, rather than the political elite's views?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,631 ✭✭✭Silentcorner

They have only got themselves to blame.

They have silenced ordinary people who might be reticent to offer an opinion in a poll or on a doorstep....it essentially means the political class, up until today had no idea what the public will do in a voting booth, but people who feel silenced or unrepresented do have a vote and will exercise that right.

It will be very interesting to see how the political and media establishment respond to this, if they think this is a one off they are kidding themselves, just because they have all drank cool aid doesn't mean the rest of us have!!

    Or.

She can just be considered a single mother with a kid.

    Which she is, funnily enough.

She can just be. Sums it up perfectly I think. Obviously they aren't good enough to be considered a family by some No voters.
