Yes I’m on the old one so attempting to move to that one (but still in contract )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,125 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

When is your contract finished? If it's within 8 weeks you can get the new deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,987 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

9th of May maybe I’m in luck

Worst case, you may have to pay the €50 break fee to switch. May well be worth it if you use a lot of night rate electricity.

Since this is a "renewal" offer surely there's no breakage fee since it's basically renewing the plan you're already on?

I’m exact same as you. Could you send me the link you did this on?

are you essentially tied in for another year now?

Can those who have never had a day/night or smart rate, and currently on a 24 hour rate, change to a day/night with a smart meter?

Had my old d/n meter changed yesterday for the RM108. Took about an hour to do with electricity off for about 20 minutes. The technician said he was installing 7 a day on average so there seems to be a big push on at the moment.

Am I right I’m thinking it takes 30 days from the install date for the reading to start showing on the ESBN website (testing the signal strength) ?

I could see stuff within a couple of days but it was definitely at least 30 days before it was consistently updating properly with no gaps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,173 ✭✭✭Jofspring

Had my D/N changed in January and didn't even realise. It was only when I went to submit a reading I saw it. They said they would organise a day to do it but obviously just came and did it when we were at work. Out of contract so shopped around, staying on D/N and moving to Electric Ireland. I was with Energia and it has gone to 40c day and 20c night with no discount. Electric Ireland is 29c day and 14c night after 24% discount. Smart metre window of 3 or 4 hours is still too tight with a heatpump going as well as car charging so sticking with D/N.

24 hr rate on a smart meter?

You might be able to get a swap to a rm108 smart meter. I haven't heard of anyone getting the smart meter swapped for the other smart meter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,173 ✭✭✭Comer1

That clarifies the question of whether we can get a new D/N contract on an RM108 after our current D/N expires

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,173 ✭✭✭Jofspring

I only signed up yesterday but haven't heard anything to the contrary so I assume it will continue as it on D/N.

Im thinking of getting the Bord Gais Smart EV plan, any opinions or feedback on it?

Urban Day units (8am to 11pm) - 27.76 cent per kWh

Urban Peak units (5pm to 7pm) - 38.71 cent per kWh

Urban Night units (11pm to 8am) - 20.93 cent per kWh

Urban EV units (2am to 5am) - 7.07 cent per kWh

    Annual Standing Charge - €325.52

It's only 3 hours of EV charging, but that would comfortably cover our daily commute comfortably when I'm not in the office (and we currently have charging at work when I am). We have no solar or batteries.

The peak is saucy, but we are currently on a 35cent 24 hour plan (and this is the reduced rate!) so overall its a huge decrease on what we would be paying, even with the €50 breakage free. Even without the EV it would probably pay for itself in the first month.

Go for the Flogas 24hr plan 23.44c 257 standing charge that plan you're looking at is very expensive sure the 24hr rate is only slightly higher than the cheapest rate on that plan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,366 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

Can you link it? The cheapest 24hour plan I see on Flogas website is 27c with a 257 standing charge. I do need to do some maths!

We don't have the smart meter long so don't have too much data to go by for usage, but I suppose I should at least try with the data we currently have.

What throws it a little is that we would be happy enough to make minor changes like delaying the appliance starts outside of the peak or even til the night rate, which wouldn't reflect in our current usage stats as that is just the flat 24H rate, we don't have any reason to do any of this stuff.

It's just above you the Flogas bwg plan, don't ring, sign up online, before you ask, no you don't have to be a bwg employee. Don't ring them do it online.

If you have charging at work, how much EV charging do you do at home % wise.

You can't sign up for the electricity one online. You need to ring up.

Apologies If these calcs are wrong, I'm trying to do this on the phone. Please correct if wrong.

If we assume a medium size 50kwh battery with 7.4kw charging, then it would take 7.5 hours to charge 0 to 100%.

If we use the 3 hour EV rate window, we can charge ~20kwh @ 0.0707 during that time. That's €1.41. The remaining ~30kwh will be @ night rate of 0.209, roughly €6.26. This gives us a total of €7.67 to charge to 100%.

Charging at the 24hr rate of 0.2344 gives a total of €11.70.

€4.04 is not much of a difference in the grand scheme of things, but still a saving if you're doing a lot of distance.

Ok thanks, when I looked at a link posted here before it didn't have a "renew" button, but the last link does.

If I start going through that link it has a checkbox to "confirm your address hasn't changed, ring us if it hasn't", how do we get by this? Do we just checkbox yes? We are actually currently with bord gais, so potentially it is ok to check it and maybe it will even save us the break fee.

We are Rural though so the standing charge is €313

We don't have the EV that long (2 weeks today) so not sure yet, but at guess maybe it will be 20% of the bill (possibly more in the summer as we can stop using the dryer as much). Im only in work 1 week every 4, and while the current allowances at work covers the return trip, I can see that changing as demand increases.

The EV rate is cheaper for your charging your car, but you do also have to consider the cost of the rest of your houses electricity consumption too.

Also with a 50Kwh battery, you'll almost certainly never be charging the full amount every time. On the regular school runs style driving, im estimating 50kWh for the week, so I'd comfortably get all my charging in on the low EV rate.

I'm on the Community Offer 30.6 and 13.5 Day/Night, wonder if I could sign up on the link for the BWG retention.- In contract till August, did they email BWG customers directly with the retention offer ? Just wondering if I can expect the same for the Community Offer..Great information posted here the past few days, thanks to all contributors.

If you can charge the car over a couple of nights then the cost is €3.50 for the 50kwh so that is a substantial saving of €8.20 if it works for you.

That would be how I'd do it too, top up to 80 during that window whenever I needed it. I just used the example of charging 0 to 100 in one go for clarity.

I only have the EV 2 weeks and I'm still on a legacy 24hr tarrif. I'm waiting till the end of the month to see if there are any further discounts.

i am in a very similar situation and looking between flogas and BG smart plan.

Interested in what you go with. I have smart meter for awhile so must plug that data in to see wat it'd look like for the rest of the house.
