I have 6 hectares of suitable ground and I am just wondering about the initial steps, should I contact my advisor first and run over it with him or contact a forester first. The newest version seems to be a lot more flexible and the payments have increased, a lot info in the below video

I would do your own research first with regards to your spacings and tree selection.

My experience has been that the Foresters don't know and don't want to know about agroforestry.

The above book is free to download. Might be helpful.

The actual planting/having trees in the field is no problem, it's more the settings it up, and the hoops you have to jump through.

Are the payments/ initial grants tax free? From the below it would seem so or am I reading this arseways?

    https://www.teagasc.ie/crops/forestry/advice/timber-harvesting/forestry-and-taxation/#:~:text=Income%20from%20the%20occupation%20of,of%20their%20residence%20or%20domicile.

"Income from the occupation of woodlands in the State, managed on a commercial basis and with a view to the realisation of profits, is exempt from Income Taxes for individuals and companies regardless of their residence or domicile. Therefore it is the individual/company who occupies the woodland that can be eligible for this exemption.

Ownership of a forest is not sufficient; occupation and management with a view to profit realisation must also be shown.

Woodland grants are not treated as income but in the preparation of annual accounts by an owner the cost of planting and maintenance should be shown as net of grants received."
