I love the Swiss song. It's like the song I wanted Olly to bring. Dizzy is so boring, sorry!

The UK entry sounds like just another minor hit really. It doesn’t even stand out on the radio. Can’t see them bothering anyone else too much with what they’ve entered.

I was expecting big things from Olly and I do like the song, but it feels like it's missing something. It is a bit of a grower though.

Very reminiscent of Pet Shop Boys in some parts.

Hopefully they can stage it well and give it a bit more oomph.

That UK song is very bland, similar kind of blandness we've been sending in past number of years. They have been on a good roll but that's very poor. Ah well

Good news for Bambie from Iceland tonight. Hera Björk (Iceland's singer back in 2010) has won their NF, seeing off the challenge from Palestinian singer Bashar. I love Hera, but her song doesn't scream qualifier. Bashar, meanwhile, would have been a very likely qualifier with sympathy votes.

The UK entry is disappointing. It's not bad as such, it's just utterly forgettable. It sounds like a filler track on an album.

If his vocals are poor on the night (which I believe they sometimes can be) I suspect another bottom 5 finish.

I'm struggling to get excited by most of the songs this year.

Croatia is the only one I love so far. I quite like Italy, Denmark & Cyprus too.

Even as jokey/novelty songs go I think The Netherlands entry is awful!

    Iceland

Clearly Iceland didn't want the attention surrounding Bashar so they went for this instead. Well that must be the reason because, whilst Bashar's song wasn't great, this is total shite altogether. Would've been dated in 2010 never mind 2024. Good news for Bambie though.

    Serbia

Not doing a lot for me on first listen, will have a tough job to qualify as the sole ballad from Ireland's half of the semi final. Would do better in the final with juries behind it.

We now know everyone in Ireland's half of SF1, I wonder where they'll put Bambie in the running order. Obviously the later the better, if we could avoid 1-4 it'd be amazing.

I cannot disagree with the above regarding Iceland.

I actually thought Bashar was Iceland's entry tbh.

This was actually discussed by the panel during Eurosong, that a perfectly competent 'radio friendly song' just won't cut the mustard in Eurovision any more. I think a lot of countries have copped this on this year, including ourselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭supereurope

Serbia might not have the juries to support it, but it does have both Slovenia and Croatia in the same semi. They will likely support their neighbour, and of course, they'll understand the language.

Regarding the running order, I think Bambie is absolutely safe from being first on. The producers are not going to open the show with something that could alienate viewers, they'll go for the most conventional, radio-friendly choice available. From here, it gets a little riskier, but I think second is still too early for an act like Bambie. Plus second tends to be the "ballad slot", but not always of course.

I suspect they'll slot Bambie in third or fourth, which I think is fine. Third in a 26-country final would be awful, not in a 16-country semi. Third also seems to be where the producers have put the "offbeat" entries in recent years - Serbia went third in their semis in both 2022 and 2023 with their quirky entries, and both qualified. Honestly, I'd rather Bambie was third than the first act on after a commercial break - that's always a bad slot, and I assume they'll be a break before song six.

I always assumed the running order was random. Hopefully we’ll get a good slot!

Does anyone know when (or if) wer’re getting a proper video for doomsday blue? The late late show performance and staging really doesn’t do the song any favours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭supereurope

It was a random draw up until 2012. Since 2013, it's been decided by the producers, mainly to keep the same types of songs apart, i.e., no one wants a run of five ballads in a row. While it's never been said, I imagine Engelbert Humperdinck opening the grand final in 2012 with a dreary ballad was another reason.

There is still an element of randomness in the order because there is a draw to determine which half of each show countries will perform in, but the exact order is decided upon by the show producers. For the semi-finals, the order is normally announced around late March IIRC.

The preview video is coming for Doomsday Blue this week in fact - it was filmed in London recently. This is the one that will be uploaded to the official Eurovision channel on YouTube.

The semi running order was mentioned earlier in this thread somewhere. IIRC it wasn’t the greatest for us.

Look at the studio & production from Iceland… a country with a similar population to Fingal…

RTÉ really couldn’t be arsed with the Eurovision could they…?

I bet there are even a few worried faces at the prospect of us actually winning!!

Only just listened to Olly’s song for the first time. 😊

I agree with previous posters, it is very underwhelming - early 90’s Pet Shop Boys/Erasure vibe.

Can’t really see a ‘left hand side of the table’ finish tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,236 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

It doesn't do anything for me either... wreaks of a mediocre album filler... herself quite likes it though.

I do feel though that the U.K. once again going down the 'established artist' route could backfire on them.. again

Spot on, Andy - as I mentioned earlier in the thread, it seems some of the BBC heads have been clouded by the ‘they’ve already sold records in Europe, so everybody will vote for them’ mentality.

As been proven time and time again, this never counts for anything - it’s all about the song at the end of the day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,695 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

Croatian song has really started to grow on me 😁

It’s also telling that Olly’s song doesn’t seem to getting as much radio airplay here in the UK - nowhere near as much as Mae Muller’s.

We've been drawn in the first half of a very strong semi, but we won't know our actual position for a few weeks yet.

All the best entries in our semi are in the first half, it's a real shame the way it has panned out.

So it seems Sam Ryder was just a flash in the pan.

The allocation draw couldn't have gone worse for Bambie. Had they been drawn in the second semi-final, I'd expect an easy qualification. Even the second half of the first semi would have been better. As things are, I'm worried they might miss out. Such a shame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 185 ✭✭delboy85

We nearly always seem to end up in the stronger semi-final. Talk about bad luck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 183 ✭✭Libertine07

    Nearly always first half too.

I think based on song quality all seven songs in the first half (maybe bar Cyprus) should qualify, but of course thats highly unlikely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭supereurope

It is always worth remembering that Ryan qualified from a very tough semi-final in 2018, though he had the good fortune of being the second-last act on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,441 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Bambie is unlike anything else in the entire Contest though - there is not a single act out of the 37 who is remotely similar to the artist (and the song is very different to everything else too). If an artist and song like that can't qualify from a 15 song televoting semi final, RTE can throw their hat at it.

Bambie is up against it, but we've never seen it performed in any kind of a decent setting. The song is genuinely good, and if staged well on the Eurovision stage then it should stand out and qualify relatively straightforwardly. We won't really know until rehearsal week, but the music video release this week might give us a hint.
