After this how can the government have confidence in Martin? If they were in opposition they would be baying for blood?

Oh sweet Jesus Peter Fitzpatrick. Mattie all is forgiven.

Meetings were put on the table, committees were formed, letters were withheld, facts were sought, information was not trusted, appeasing statements were made.

She's only let slip about this letter tonight.

She clearly went onto Prime Time to sack her. Why doesn't she just admit it. Many people would agree with her if she was constantly lied to.

I think the chair’s position was becoming untenable but it’s the way she gave her no choice. I think the chair has that statement drafted if needed.

oh thank god Danny Healy Rae is not on this committee

Its not really the accent….its the speed of delivery

She's not the boss of the DG.. OK fair enough.

But given there IS no Chair now, surely he is now directly accountable to her in the interim?

Or is the DG now essentially unsupervised?

Okay so it’s under the broadcasting act that lays out the state of play. So that’s the 2009 one then.

Anybody with any talent or capability will easily earn strong 6 figure salaries in the private sector.

Why would you want to be a TD with all the scrutiny and hassle that comes with it, for the salaries they get.

    Pay peanuts get monkeys.

Fitzpatrick is poor but he's not wrong. This clown went in to sack her on TV.

She's still dodging the "did you have confidence in her" question.

She's either hopelessly incompetent and naive, or she thinks she's cleverer than she is because this "I did all I could not to say I'd no confidence in her" line isn't washing.

And still not one inkling of accountability on her part - all someone else's fault or responsibility.

A complete shítshow. She really hasn't a clue.

It's a pathetic performance from the minister. For a minister in charge of media, all she can do is rely on her rehearsed lines.

She needs to go, but she won't.

At the end of this we need an RTE that functions says Byrne.

I don't know.. I don't see what value it's offering the Irish public in 2024 that isn't served either equally or better by the private sector.

I certainly don't think the public should be forced to fund it (under threat of prosecution). It should be massively scaled back and refocused on news, Irish sports and local affairs/entertainment and ideally made a subscription service for those who want it.

She’s a very very weak minister and she doesn’t even realise that she is telling us she is right now.

She's ridiculously under-qualified for the post and she's an exceptionally poor communicator (which is ironic given her ministry).

But then, she's a Green Party TD who was appointed to the post as part of political negotiations rather than ability or suitability. She is presumably in Government to fight her ideological cause on the environment, not deal with broadcasting, RTE mismanagement and scandal.

She shouldn't be there in the first place.

    Ahh finally! Proper questioning resumes.

Byrne did elicit something interesting. So Siun indicated she was going to resign if the minister sent her this letter. Minister then wanted to let the dust settle in case the chair acted rashly by saying that but she went on TV and refused to express confidence, which is effective dismissing her.

Something which warranted a face to face meeting yet she sacked her on TV. Incredible.

Shes more suitable to planting a few trees around the place.

Only got two hours. I’ll check if anything of any significance happens in the last hour. I doubt it.

She is completely useless as not only a Minister but a public representative in general.

Everything is done by someone else. She has no responsibility (in her mind anyway) and limited knowledge of what's going on until she reads it in the paper or this sort of mess emerges.

Even then there's no notion of her being in any way accountable for the actions or mistakes of her staff, advisors or others under the remit of her Department.

What's worse is that she will almost certainly survive this politically because like her appointment in the first place, she's just making up the coalition numbers and keeping the Greens happy.

    It's absolutely ridiculous.

Let's hope Siun is Prime Time tonight for her right of reply.
