Upgrade/Build CPU decision

Its come time I really need to upgrade my old Alienware Aurora ALX PC because, Steam no long supports windows 7 and she needs an update to play new games. What would be a good CPU and GPU to get to go with ASUS RoG CROSSHAIR x670e gene If I wanna system with high settings in games like latest Call of Duty and BATTLEFIELD 2042 etc ??? https://rog.asus.com/uk/motherboards/rog-crosshair/rog-crosshair-x670e-gene-model/ Its an mATX motherboard and I'm going with AMD GPU on this build. The generally best regarded gaming CPU is the 7800X3D. Games love the large cache on them. If you need something cheaper, you'll need to advise us of a budget.

For the PSU, we'd need more details. Old ones can still be used, but everything is much more demanding of watts now than 2012.

Games wise, it won't make much difference. Games simply are not threaded enough to take advantage of high core count CPUs. But that said, only €70 more for 50% more cores is excellent value for money all the same.

Managed to nab a 4090 founders edition and looking for a worthy CPU to pair it up with. Was mainly looking at a 13900k or 14900k but they are pricey as hell. Would the 7800X3D be a good alternative?

Mostly for a workhorse pc with lots of local AI models, computational physics, video editing and some mild gaming.

Not a huge fan of amd but they do have reasonable pricing...

X3D are really tricky to recommend for anything outside of gaming. Might be some cases where the L3 cache helps but the way they are built means that they are downclocked to deal with heat issues of literally having a large chuck of silicon sitting on the CPU die so if the large L3 cache is not leveraged you are paying more for literally less. They are for gaming first and foremost. It's why the 7950/7900X3D is worse than the cheaper 7800X3D because while technically faster they cannot boost as consistently well their little brother due to the heat dissipation issues.

I'd list out your actually use cases (the actual software you are running and how quickly you need stuff done and is someone paying for that end product) first, see what CPU is going to give you the best return. Truth be told any half decent CPU these days is going to be perfectly fine gaming with especially if you play at 1440p/4k on that 4090.

Of course if you wanted the best gaming GPU right now and was happy to take the productivity hit it's not like the 7800X3D cannot perform those tasks just wouldn't be the most optimal choice in some senarios. This is why the use case is important to know.

Nice perspective, thanks! Think I'll fork out a little extra for a 13900 or 14900. It's a future-proofing rig I'm gunning for so don't mind spending a bit extra on something more cutting edge.

I wouldn't say you are future proofing with those Intel chips either. They do better in certain scenarios but a 7950x will trade blows with them and be on a platform that will offer drop in upgrades down the line along with being far more efficient doing it. Those Intel CPUs will require an entire new motherboard if you do upgrade.

That all said packages like Premier Pro do run better on Intel CPUs so again your total use case in important here.
