I am saying they are getting their incumbent advantage now.

His numbers are not "a lot less than you would expect from an incumbent" at all.

They had the incumbent advantage a few years ago and they're cashing in on essentially the same advantage again.

So your point that they're somehow throwing away a potential future incumbent advantage by having him now is what "doesn't hold water".

If you have difficulty understanding this simple point that's your problem.

Given the GOP efforts to bring back child labour, they'd probably have several years work experience by that stage so why not??

Herein lies the problem..... 74 million plus voted for Trump last time out, crazy as it may seem they aren't all stupid. A relative and most of her large extended family voted for Trump and I asked her why, "He is anti abortion". That was it, nothing else. These were not dumb people. Single issue voters don't care about all the other "trivia", many Americans couldn't care less about Israel, Afghanistan or even E Jean Carroll. Promise them jobs, point out how bad the economy is at the moment and blame the other guy.

People ask what did Trump do when in power, he stacked the Supreme Court and got Roe v Wade repealed. This is a massive achievement to a large swathe of Christian/conservative America. If everyone keeps thinking that no one could possibly vote for such an odious person then it is that apathy that gives him a chance.

I think any decent Democratic candidate wipes the floor with Trump but Biden is not the greatest candidate, his only real selling point is he is a better alternative than Trump. I will vote for ABT. Anyone But Trump.

At this stage the entirety of the American Democratic project seems to hinge on independent voters and liberals holding their noses for corporate Democrat candidates til MAGA dissolves, Trump dies, the GOP stop voter suppression and gerrymandering, or the Christian Taliban decide to have a **** joint and calm down; as a long term strategy it's not great, so you'd worry there's a degree of when not if to America becoming an English speaking hybrid of Russia and Afghanistan.

A substantial portion of a population backing a rapist is a pretty worrying reflection of a society.

The Christian Conservative movement is largely driving the GOP these days, CPAC a major conference already attended by Trump among other senior republican figures, and Roe v Wade showed the influence has started to have federal impact (the scuttlebutt is Marriage Equality is next if Trump gets in); while Project 2025 lurks around as intent written down. The slope towards democratic backsliding isn't that steep or long when one side openly embraces a more Unitary Executive.

You debate the likelihood, but there's no debating the presence of those who want America more fundamentalist, its democratic principles sanded down a touch.

I remember the shock when Khomeini took over Iran.

America slipping into some anti democratic theocracy would be equally shocking but why ,if one not the other?

Does the colour of their skin or their access to wealth protect them from the madness going the rounds?

(Did I forget to mention Germany and you know who?)

James Carville keeps posting Youtube videos (I admit to watching a bunch of them, mostly his stream of consciousness but hilarious in a way) trying to get Donald Trump to sue him for defamation for declaring he has The Clap (ie. Syphilis). Looks forward to Discovery.

Elvis Presley actually served his tour of duty...

And Trump can't carry a tune.

Throwback: you can see Mike Johnson here, when most people still had no clue about him, he's had a stealthy congressional career

Hell, Obama is more Elvis than TFG lol

    The ballet you say?

Probably the only place a right wing American conservative can look at teenage girls without judgement.

Seriously though, Carlson would rank highly as suspected one of those "better russian than democrat" types; doubt any Kompromat was needed here.

You have to wonder if any American ally can feel truly safe because American Conservatism (of the Trump era, at least) seems to be on a constant position shift due to edgelordism and paranoid conspiracy theory. There's so much noise flying about that its principles are hard to discern, which may be more of a feature than a bug in that its true principles would be so odious to a majority of Americans that they must remain masked with theater, confusion and distraction either indefinitely or at a point where there is no repercussion to truly revealing them.

Tucker Carlson will be a rockstar within the GQP movement for that photograph because it's all about one-upmanship in that political space right now. Who can be the most provocative? Who can display the most influence? Thousands upon thousands of wannabes on Twitter and talking heads on their info-tainment channels all vying for attention and influence, but none of them have got a box at the Bolshoi.

It'll be interesting, if nothing else, to see where the GQP talking points go next and fold back on each other as each commentator searches for a sizzlingly controversial hot take to make a fortune on. Being pro-abortion, but only for Democrat voters? Oooooooooohhhhh, oh no you di'n't....

You do realise that the reason Trump can only serve 2 terms is because the constitution was changed in the 40s or 50s? If it can be changed one way why can't it be changed back? And are you confident that if Trump was in power, the people in his cult wouldn't try?

A single issue voter is the definition of dumb or stupid. We've joked for decades about the "dumb Americans" but it really had risen to an extreme level in the last decade. It is a indictment of the America educational system which has been degrading for many decades now.

I'm my mind there are 3/4 types or Trump voters.

    1. Dumb people and stupid single issue voters.

    2. Emboldened racists.

    3. Powerful wealthy people who stand to gain most from his policies.

    4. A combination of some or all of the above.

Trump started saying the quiet parts out loud which emboldened the large swathes or racists, misogynists and Christian nationals that makes up much of middle America.

How a piece of **** like Trump became the hero of the working class will be studied in the future.

I do laugh at the extreme Christian right in America who hitched their wagons to Trump. The definition of hypocrites. The real Christian running was Biden.

It also has to be stated that how the hell low working class and poor in middle America always vote republican when without fail their interests are always consistently worse served with Republicans in power. I'm not saying the Democrats are working class hero's or anything close but Republicans don't believe in welfare and social security and benefits. Yet the very people who receive these benefits the most voted or them. All to make sure women are forced to carry pregnancies against their will and that they are allowed to own whatever gun they want. Mind boggling stuff.

Its not mind-boggling when you consider that they all believe that soon, they too will become rich and they don't want to have money taken off them by the government.

It is such an individualistic society that they are only looking out for themselves. Don't worry that the local school is terrible, this time next year we can go private and that will solve our problems.

Hence when socialism is such a dirty word. It is seen as taking what is mine and giving it to others. Others that just need to work harder.

US sells this idea of opportunity and wealth so much that the majority actually believe it is going to happen to them any day.

They look at the examples of sports stars, YouTube stars, Zuckerberg etc and think that will be them soon. They don't focus on the vast majority of people that it never happens to.

They aren't voting to keep themselves poor, they are voting to keep themselves richer when when they become rich.

There are several checks which must be passed in order to change the constitution. If it hasn't been changed in response to school shootings, it won't be changed for the rapist. Maga makes a lot of noise but there are simply not enough of them.

I get that. I know that there a checks in place so it isn't easy but I think they would try.

They won't. They need control of both houses a large majorities unless I am wrong.

So a voter who prioritizes addressing the climate crisis and votes green because of this one issue, is the definition of stupid?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,689 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Its arguable that they are, voting just about the climate crisis when the party involved doesn't have a clue about economic issues or social issues wouldn't be very discerning. But Americans don't have the option of a 'green' party, its a binary choice, and taking one single issue to decide between a choice of two parties isn't all that bright.

Well, considering I was pointing to the 22nd Amendment of the constitution, I didn't think it needed to actually be said that the constitution can indeed be changed.

And I have no doubt whatsoever that Trump would love to try for an amendment, just like he would have loved to try and stay in power the first time. But he failed then and he would fail again. It takes two thirds of both houses to approve an amendment, so unless a hell of a lot of democrats start voting for Trump that just isn't going to happen.
