It reads like a lovely PR piece for the Navy. Are they now saying a Seaman can earn up to 60k after training?

    With allowances and tours.

Tender to be published for the MRV this week.

A very positive step. We look forward to the specification with interest.

The Journal must be reading this thread i think they mentioned every vessel ever mentioned here. Very interesting about the chance of a 2nd MRV

Lets feckin walk before we can run eh?

Besides, unless these vessels are more Absalon than Karel Doorman, then its not a second one we need, its a multipurpose frigate or two to finish out the capability ambition.

should they not be sorting berth and power first for something that might happen in 10 years . basin is full of vessels they cant put to sea and verolme is the same no room for another grey hull... i think they would be better of working with what they have first... NS should have never lost the helo of eithne whats to say that wont happen again if this build happen in few years time

Arguing about what might have been with Eithne is utterly pointless, as for waiting and sorting things out, this procurement has been waiting the better part of two decades, how much longer would you suggest waiting?

It's not the tender being published, just the PIN, which is basically a formal heads up to industry regarding intent to issue a tender at a later date.

If they went with Arrowhead the production in Poland & the UK would tie in for the build with our vessel timeline and the end of the production runs for the UK and & Polish navys.

The state could get an incredabile deal of the british as the would be willing to do what it takes to keep the scottish yard open and be able to print in there papers how successfull the UK is.

Depends on what the article means by “completion” by 2025, are they talking about the tender process or the build? The British yards are unlikely to be free to get a hull completed by then, two of their 31’s haven’t even been laid down yet. The Polish yards maybe be able to add in another hull in that timeframe but it would be fairly different to the fit out for theirs.

Add in the political element of Brexit and where it might be more beneficial to spend our limited defence monies (ie is it worth more to buy EU than U.K.?), and the fact that the design doesn’t match the vehicle lift of what was known about the MRV?

The Examiner article is a bit misleading, as the D.Joao 2 is an aircraft carrier for UAV'S. See photos, as it has a ski ramp. The Dutch vessel is a hell of a lot bigger than what the DF are seeking, or can afford.

She is not an aircraft carrier by any margin, she’s an LPD with facilities for many things including UAVs, given some of her stated goals for research and environmental protection she’s plenty of non military usage as well.

A very interesting and versatile design indeed and would be a great addition to the fleet.

I read a piece recently describing it as an aircraft for UAV'S. Would be excellent capability to have given the massive area the navy have to patrol in the Atlantic.

    Carrier!

So if it is imminent (finally) are we likely to see it covered in one of the Sunday Papers this weekend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,166 ✭✭✭sparky42

I've read that one, but to me that seems to just be based off the Journal's first article, the state dropping "the largest single spend procurement" (and isn't that a sad reflection of things) would I think get more coverage than just that?

I presume the Tender will be wrote to the specs of the ship the navy want so it will be very clear what we will be getting when the tender is posted.

Apart from the Dutch has any other nation sent there MRV for a visit?

Who is going to man this potential new ship? Navy, or will there be an auxiliary service setup? Or will it be a mix of military and civil?

This is many years ahead so it is almost impossible to say. I would imagine that the preferred MO is for NS crewing 100%, given the possibility of deployment in areas of conflict

Minor correction, they do have tankers still in operation, it’s their solid stores ships that are the issue, particularly as due to the 2010 review they only have one ship that can support the carriers and the Fort Vic is screwed. It is funny however on sites like UKDJ after seeing so many posters hitting us for our manning issues particularly in the engineering department that many of the posters have finally accepted that it’s not a unique issue for us, with their RFA and RN having the same growing problem, along with other navies around the world.

The list is fairly long and growing actually (something which some trolls here have ignored of course), RAN have tied up a couple of frigates as well.

As for the RFA, the two smaller tankers are tied up and likely won’t sail again for the U.K. The larger tankers have been operating though.

    A red letter day indeed.

The price estimate of €300 million is instructive, though it is by no means a ceiling.

Worth mentioning that HNLMS Karel Doorman was delivered for €363 Million at 2014 price index, which adjusts to about €450 Million in 2024.

And so the scale of vessel we are looking at can be somewhat ascertained from that. It will be interesting if,down the line, the advice provided by Houlders on specification will make it into the public domain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,789 ✭✭✭roadmaster

Is the extra 100 million due to extra scope or allowing for inflation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,807 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

All inflation from 2014 to now. Obviously since 2020 that index has gone through the roof relative to the preceeding 30 years.

363m was its cost delivered, I have no idea what the RNLN original budget was.

So, how long before the first soundbites about how many "hospitals/schools/houses..." or "warmongering NATO/EU ARMY!" from our wonderful collection of Left nutters?

But seriously, great to see this finally actually starting and now we get to argue about what options might be put forward and which we might prefer...

Now , they'll have to start thinking on spending a lot more than that to have crews to run the thing

The major advantage the irish navy have is that the patrols can be fairly regular and fairly short , ( for the most part) ,

if the Navy provide better work life balance, and decent family accommodation, as well as career training ,they'll get,(and keep) the required numbers no prob ,

People want a life - being in the royal navy ,US navy, and being told youre heading off for a 6 month or 1 year tour if you have family at home would be kind of daunting,
