I got a fine from a rental in the UK. Should I be worried. What next to do

Dear Sir/Madam,

Notification of Admin Fee

By signing the Rental Agreement when taking the vehicle out on hire, you agreed to be liable as owner in respect of any fixed penalty offence committed and would incur an admin fee without prior notification of the charge.

Your card has declined and we are unable to take our £55 admin fee and the charge of £60. Please contact us as soon as possible, before we pass your details to our debt collection agency.

Please, be aware that we will send the details in 7 days after the date of this notification and we will not take any payment after that date.

What is the fine for? I would be more worried of them handing over your licence details as the named driver.

Is your CC maxed out? My understanding is that they keep your details for months after the rental period specifically to deal with fines and tolls etc. And yeah the admin fee is extra salt getting rubbed in.

It might help to put the 'car' before 'rental'in the title. As it is, its vague.

I'd pay it but most wouldn't.

Im assuming your licence details will be passed to agency issuing fine regardless of paying the hire company (or not) as they will need a driver to apply the fine to.

if the company is likely to be one you wish to use in future I would pay them. I don’t imagine they could enforce the debt down here though.

Surprised they accepted Revolut excactly for this reason. Rented a car in the UK 2 weeks ago and it was strictly credit card only.

I was always under the impression that if you get a fine while driving a rental car the company will charge your card (and add £££'s in "administrative fees" ,because they can).

In comparison to the work involved, my accountant charged me nothing like that. He spent years in college, pays his fees to his regulatory body and keeps a dedicated office. To get a letter and forward it on, has a fraction of the work you describe.

It's more if it was a speeding fine where you could have an outstanding case in the UK that might cause an issue travelling through UK in the future. If the UK government flagged you as failing to turn up to court, unpaid fines etc then you could be stopped at the border or arrested during a routine UK traffic stop.

In terms of admin fees these are common and routinely excessively high. They add them to things like toll/m50 fees. Part of the reason they are high is because people like yourself try to not pay them, so car company may be liable. I suspect they will try claim the fee again at a future date. There have been cases where (mostly foreign small dodgy) hire companies throw a fine on your card months later for a toll or speeding fine that may not even be real and once transaction has gone through it's hard to verify and dispute.

Personally I would ring them and pay it. Not worth potential future hassle. If you did the crime.

that said it’s not difficult to avoid paying them just don’t drive like a clown in a rental car.
