It is a worse hell than selling your soul to the Turf Accountants? Knowing the pain and misery they cause people and families.

Listened for 10 minutes last Tuesday & Wednesday, and just tuned in there again to see how it's going... (came in during Steve Winwood's Higher Love)

Dropping Niall Horan's name when he went to Chicago to interview him and talking about his 'box of Ireland'. He's rambling, incoherent, and just a general mess... telling the start of a 'dad joke' but not finishing it because he knows it's beyond brutal...

Jesus he is really is a terrible broadcaster.

    He's got absolutely nothing..

    He's got absolutely nothing..

To elaborate.. No charm, no personality, no empathy (everything is still me, me, me), no charisma, no likability, no presence, no clear diction.....

He is the very definition of a busted flush. and the longer this show goes on, the more he'll be shown up and the harder it will be for RTÉ to ever justify bringing him back (which is I believe the ultimate end game for Ryan and Noel).

I think Ryan's career path may veer more towards being a media advisor or some sort of influencer.

good god I tried to listen too, with the mrs who timed it at 20 mins

constantly with the dropping self-congratulatory messages

and he comes across as manic....there were sentences pouring out of his mouth that I literally could not comprehend...and if I can't there's no way your average brit is gonna

    what's going on there lol

RTE is where its always been with NK/Tubridy. Small fish in a small bowl, that's all its ever going to be, with a big salary.

RTE management are not like the rest of us. Where we see mediocrity they see greatness. Its just one big bubble. They do not care what anyone outside RTE thinks. Even the new broom Bakhurst wanted to bring him back, completely ignoring the collapse in licence fee revenue. It is and always will be a basket case of an organisation.

We may be looking at a modern-day retelling of the Emperor's New Clothes. It's almost comical how he's exposing his limitations for all to see and hear. On paper, this was a no-brainer. Virgin was taking a punt on a guy who until recently was RTE's top presenter. A man with a CV most jobbing presenters can only dream of. For Tubridy it was a way to get out of Ireland for a while and reboot. I've listened in intermittently and it's tough going. He doesn't seem to have the wit to change his sthick to suit his new audience. All he had to do was play some records, chatter innocuously (not for too long, mind) and remember who his audience was. Instead we're getting a sort of hospital requests on steroids.

The best broadcaster's are always curious individuals who's first thought is the world outside of their own head and the people in it. Think of the giants of TV and radio over the last 50 years and every one of them had that crucial aspect of their personality. It can be boiled down to a simple ability to deviate off a cue card and come up with interesting questions off the cuff that present themselves organically in a conversation between two people.

Tub's never had this ability. As mentioned by Joe Brolly on his podcast, Tub's Late Late Show staff insisted that every guest hand in a list of topics they wanted to cover with the host and no wild cards were allowed. Tubridy was exceptionally lucky he came along in this new age of ultra careful, non controversial, formulaic interviewing as it papered over so many of the cracks in his ability. He wouldn't last a day doing his shows in the 70's or 80's when there was little pre-ordained prep and everything was chaotic and unscripted. Indeed, he wouldn't have to last a day, because he would never have been given the job.

On the books thing, they are nearly beside the point. It's not a debate about high brow v low brow. No one expects Tubs to pull quotations from great literature out of his arse which apply perfectly to whatever text he just got from Charlotte in Prickwillow. The problem is anyone with any cop on knows he's spoofing to high heaven. He beats the bookworm persona to death. It's his invention and he hammers it harder than Boris Johnson hammered "Get Brexit Done" ..... yet we all know it's a blag. He started out his career at RTE as quite a pompous little twit that was doing an Irish Chris Evan's impression. He would have been better off sticking with that and let people see the real person behind the mic. Sure, he mightn't have gotten the Late Late gig and might've just been another journeyman DJ on 2FM scraping by on €250k pa, but he would have had a job for life and done alright. Instead this old fogey / bookworm / #BeKind concoction was foisted on the nation and it's as contrived and hollow as you'll find. The fact he's still flogging this long dead horse in an new country with an audience that are guaranteed to not give a toss, is perplexing to say the least.

All he has to do to get through his probation is keep quiet and introduce songs 😀

I said similar upthread. On paper, this looked like a good catch for Virgin Media/ Q102. It's anything but, in reality.

I didn't listen to, or watch him when he was with RTE. I tried early on, but he was so uncomfortable with anyone and everyone, I gave up very quickly. His ego got in the way of everything else, as time went on.

I'm turning the dial away in the mornings, while he is on Q102 - which I generally like as easy listening background stuff when I'm at home.

He was on the pigs back, in RTE, and would still be coasting along there if greed hadn't scuppered him. I wonder if he even realises that or does he actually believe, to use his own phrase re the new job - 'this is senior hurling now...'

If Wireless Group manages to offload its Irish stations including Q102, would Tubridy be moved (permanent gig on Q102 with his Mid Morning Matters show) along with them? The one thing about that clip from Eddy Temple-Morris posted earlier was the sheer enthusiasm of the guy for good music. It is like the ETM show was about the music but with Tubridy, the show is about Tubridy.

Asking people to text in with recommendations is all very 80/90s, everyone has the Internet in their hands and can find recommendations there, next he'll be asking " text me in your favourite colour" 😒

If the Virgin gig isn't even appearing on his agents website that tell us that it's probably a casual position, possibly on a week by week basis considering Virgin are the ones hosting a toxic liability.

The minute the spruiking posts on threads about this subject stop it's probably the moment his agent knows Virgin are pulling the plug. Chances are Ryan might be the last to find out.

This is a highly formatted music radio station so it doesn't matter what time of day or night you listen, it will always be running from a set playlist and there are no real specialist shows or presenters.

From what I make of it, it seems like they are trying to extend the breakfast show vibe into the mid-morning slot which maybe a big mistake IMO. The mid-morning slot should show a contrast from the usual whacky zaniness 'up and at em' attitude that breakfast shows on these type of radio stations usually portray. The music set list on either slot doesn't change nor is it supposed to, but the presenter style and attitude should. If Ryan Tubridy were to present this slot in a more relaxed manner and focus more on the presentation of the music content, of course he will get his share of criticism for sounding bland or too safe but in fairness he would have been doing a job that is required for that particular type of radio and proving that he can or attempt to do talk and music radio.

I have not heard the weekend syndicated shows which are probably more music orientated, but they are voice tracked and engineered. I don't know if Ryan Tubridy can actually present a 'live' show (music or talk) in which he doesn't make it all about himself.

I will be very surprised if his slot is successful with the Virgin Radio listeners as I think at the moment it is the auditory equivalent of a Trainwreck.

I can't see it working for any length of time, provided of course the listener figures are of actual importance here. Perhaps he will be able to establish a low baseline listenership that isn't offensively bad to the management and if he can rumble along like that for 6 to 12 months, I think he and NK will consider it job done. Back to Ireland like a big British radio star.

But it's just a big ask for Tubs. I think any competent, "safe pair of hands" mid-morning DJ in a comparable position on UK radio would have a bit of charisma, a bit of likeability and would have some kind of rapport with his audience, even with the limitations of this music and ad heavy format. The old blather and superficial guff that Tubs sold on Radio1 just won't work. Irish blarney is especially embarrassing in 2024. London is a 50 minute Ryanair flight away now. People head over to buy clothes in the morning and are back in Ballyboreen for teatime. With technology today the UK is like the next town in the county. There was a market for that paddywhackery in years gone by and perhaps on BBC, doing a slow moving classic hits thing, there still might be amongst an older demographic, but how can it work on this station with this listenership?

Ah, ha! I was getting my Spotify linked to car earlier, and the radio came on at Q102 first (I don't really listen to radio, but it starts radio when comes on). At the exact moment you mentioned the Niall Horan bit - Christ, I nearly felt sorry for him. "My friend Niall Horan chatted to me in the dressing room, then said "Ryan, I've got to go out on stage"." I guess you had to be there.

then it went on to "Oh, I've got a listener in Abu Dhabi" or somewhere, adding it to the list of new listeners he had. Before saying, "you can always email me at ryan.tubridy@virginradio.co.uk" - there's an email for future queries I guess.

I followed Tubridy on insta there few days ago and had to unfollow him. He’s so fooking childish and contrived. It’s the usual me, me, me.. and boasting about all the gifts he’s being sent. Strange fish

He comes across as very very needy. Quite a pathetic individual that the Irish public funded through RTE’s army of researchers, runner and fetchers for decades. Real disgrace tbf

    I followed Tubridy on insta

Why would you do this in the first place? What exactly were you expecting?

Watching a car crash in slow motion is captivating.

I heard him giving his Instagram handle on his show today, inviting questions, suggestions, recommendations, etc.

He did warn that any non - kind content would cause one to be "blocked at dawn" 🙂

Terry prone on newstalk earlier reads 8 books at the one time in and out. Buys over 100 books when she travels to to the US. Was interesting to listen to her favourite ones in the last year, came across a genuine book worm..

Does anyone on here who are Tubs fans think the show is good?

I'm not a fan but listened in. His needyness (to my ears) is off the charts.

The name dropping of his pallyness to the "stars". His constant reading out positive posts. His Irish references... is this the pro you thought he was?

Even though she can be a bit smarmy on TV, she does appear to have a razor sharp intellect. Her "Ryanstone Cowboy" quip was very good. There's a vast difference between her vocabulary and that of Tubridy. Surprised she hasn't discovered Amazon Kindle though. :)
