If the fixed rate drops in 6 months, it'll be for new customers only too. It's a sign up offer. Normal enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,178 ✭✭✭newhouse87

Yeah just dont agree with tiered system. I thought sse price drops in feb were for all customers, maybe i was wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,665 ✭✭✭bren2001

Fixed price is fixed for the duration of the contract. If prices go up, your price doesn't.

There are no tiers. You just decide your risk and choose fixed discount percentage or fixed price.

Same for me .. I have an unactivated smart meter, would that be the reason?

The esbn site? It only shows 1 week max, doesn't even add up the day or week for you.

It's one step above pen & paper. which you'll still need to do any type analysis of your usage if you haven't got a monitoring plug. At least it's available but for general users it's not much use.

@batistuta9 thanks. Thought it might be that.

ESBN site shows me my usage back to the date I switched suppliers in November (not sure why it resets when you switch, might be data protection).

Off topic a little but is that not insanely low? I've had bills with more than 3177kWh on them!

Thankfully (thanks to this thread!) I've benefitted from the Energia and then Flogas fixed Day Night rates so >97% of that is at the lowest rates of 7c and then 13.5c but still.

    Sorry so it is 🤦‍♂️

It seems totally implausible to power and heat the average semi d with 5104kwh since the average semi d is 109m2 and the average semi d ber is BER is C3 and median gas consumption is nearly 9000kwH. Must be lots of folks freezing their bollocks off.

Is the question you should be asking not, Is my usage insanely high? 😂

If you look through that release the majority are between 2.5-5000 kWh. There's more using 1000-2500 than 5000 plus combined

There's not much point comparing to others though, too many variables. you use what you use, best comparison is yourself.

Couldn't be that many homes relying on electric heating anyway could there, especially older ones. Wonder how many is used in the data

Wouldn't base the comfort of the house on a BERs either.

In the same boat as ELM.

Is my use insanely high, yes, but last year it was higher, was heating with night rate electric as it was cheaper than oil/kWh and lots of km on an EV. I think highest bill was 2700ish kWh in a 2 month period.

But knowing your use is key to all of this.

Hey folks, I'm trying to see at what stage would a stand alone electric heater be more economical than using the gas central heating.

The house in question has 2 zones, thermostats in the up and downstairs hall, the BER is D1. 1 Bedroom, sitting room kitchen and utility room downstairs, 3 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. The residents probably spend most time in their bedrooms.

Taking a heater like this as an example: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dimplex-Electric-Radiator-Electronic-Climate/dp/B002G0DE14?th=1

My thoughts are it would be cheaper to use an electric heater in the downstairs bedroom, than to put the downstairs heat on, but I think as soon as more than one person needs to heat their room upstairs, the gas central heating would be more economical upstairs?

Any insights would be appreciated :)

Put the heating on one night and note the meter read before you go to sleep and when you wake up. That gives you an indication of the cost to heat your downstairs. Of course, on colder nights you might use a bit more and on warmer nights a bit less but it gives you a ballpark.

From that you can compare costs.

I'd expect your conclusion to be correct. Elec rad if just one room but gas if more needed. If moisture is a problem, a byproduct of a dehumidifier is heat which is great.

    Hello,

Does anyone have any sense of when Energia will reduce their rates (and the rest of the suppliers) in response to Airtricity's reduction?

My contract ends in a month. Bonkers showing Airtricity is cheapest by quite a bit but I would prefer not to switch to them.

Conor Pope mentioned in the Irish Times that he expected the other suppliers to respond in days but he didn't say what this was based on.

    Thanks for any insights.

Just wondering what people's advice is:

Out of contract on Saturday with Electric Ireland. Am on Day/Night Meter. Rural.

Yuno are offering the best rate - Fixed 12 month plan at 0.27 Day and 0.17 night. With a 0.99 Standing charge. Prices all ex vat.

My only concern is the installation of a smart meter. Should that make any difference or does that only make a difference if I actually sign up to a smart plan which I'm currently not in favour of doing so.

I see some people are saying SSE have cuts on the way and they have no obligation to install a smart meter so I think I would favour that but they are currently are 3c and 1c more expensive on their day/night unit rates.

I use 4,000 units per annum on the day meter and 3,100 on the night.

Have a look on the thread, there's a dirt dirt dirt cheap plan if you have a smart meter (i know you don't) between 2-4 at night or something. If you can force your energy profile to fit, it's a no brainer.

Whatever about unit rates dropping which seems to be moving at a Sloths pace, what happened to the big introductory discounts of between 30 and 40% we used to enjoy? There's no sign of them making a return, surprise surprise....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,842 ✭✭✭Cape Clear

Lack of competition and suppliers happy to maintain their current market share. Also worth noting that Yuno have attracted 10K+ customers since entering the market in August. It would have to be multiples of that figure to force the existing players to become more generous with their discounts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,746 ✭✭✭✭zell12

More people need to switch suppliers to make them compete. Getting €450 from the Govt does not make customers proactive in switching

    • number of electricity monthly switches for June 2022 was 45,518. Number of electricity monthly switches for June 2023 is 22,111. This represents a ~51% decrease.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,665 ✭✭✭bren2001

That's an amazing stat. A 51% decrease, there's still a lot of value in switching.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,746 ✭✭✭✭zell12

It was purely because of the e600 credits kicking in 2022-23 (note sharp dip Nov 22). Exists ~2.2m domestic mprns, only a fraction of those switch annually, therefore be years before we have a competitive marketplace

Mainly because people are afraid they'll lose the credit if they change provider. The offering of fixed priced deals which were never available before has proven popular and it gives people a good stab at predicting what their bills will be. There'd want to be a provider giving a very good deal to get me to break my fixed rate deal which I have until April.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭cormie

It could also be the fact that the suppliers stopped giving good sign up discounts. I was all set to switch on renewal, but there was nothing better than what I was on at the time. I imagine had another company offered a 38% discount like the one I signed up to, the my current provider would have told me they don't offer that discount to existing customers and I could switch and come back again to them next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,862 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Anyone renewing or switching, what sort of discounts are you being offered this time?

2yrs ago I was on a 25% electricity discount with BG. The best they would offer last renewal was 15% I think. Wonder what they'll offer me this time (renewal in about 30 days time).

have you seen south east energy - guy called Rory- selling wholesale rates, price changes monthly, you only know January cost on 1st of Feb. 150e fee per year. Seems like a no brainer in a market of falling prices. December was around 21 cent on the 24 hour rate.

    😎
