We can keep this going through the year if anyone is interested.

Today is 01 January, first day of 2024. And World Peace Day, as declared by the Catholic Church.

On this day in 1801 the Union of Great Britain and Ireland was founded. On this day in 1958 the EEC started operating.

On this day in 1972 Lilian Thuram was born. Has 142 international caps for France, currently second behind Hugo Lloris.

On this day in 1957 Seán South of Garryowen died aged 28.

Too soon, Wikipedia Day is not for a couple of weeks yet. But I will be sure to mark it.

02 January 2024 was the day when Ryan Tubridy started his new job with Virgin Radio. Wayne Rooney was sacked from his job as Birmingham City manager. And Claudine Gay resigned from her job in Harvard.

Kate Moss turns 50 today. If you were around in the 90s, you have to wonder how she made it to the half-century.

From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch’.

Yesterday, January 28th, was the 38th anniversary of the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster.

Incidentally, here is a brilliant documentary that goes into chillingly precise detail about what caused the disaster.

Lá le Bríde, An Chéad lá de Feabhra.

The first day of Spring in the old money. I cycled by St Brigid's Shrine today. There were hundreds of people gathered. The car park was full, and the Good Catholics had abandoned lots more along the country roads. Leaving no room for two cars to pass. Brigid was a wondrous woman, and in recent years has attracted Pagans as well as Catholics into her followers. She wore a cloak which covered acres of land. Up there with the miracle of the Loaves and Fishes.

    30 April 2024.

The day that the Readers Digest in the UK announced it was closing down.

"Reader’s Digest magazine has closed in the UK, according to its editor-in-chief of six years.

Eva Mackevic announced on Linkedin on Monday evening that Reader’s Digest UK has “come to an end” after 86 years.

She wrote: “Unfortunately, the company just couldn’t withstand the financial pressures of today’s unforgiving magazine publishing landscape and has ceased to trade.”
