Disappointing end to the game for him. He played well when he came on but he always seems to have one brain fart per game.

Big Joe head and shoulders best player out there IMO. Super performance on both sides of the ball and still making impacts up to the last play.

Great win for Ulster. Hats off to Billy Burns for those 3 kick assists. Cut open Leinster defence with surgical precision. Review won’t be pretty for Nienaber.

Burns was comfortably better than Byrne or Prendergast. He was significantly better and more important than McCarthy.

Still, it was fascinating hearing about Sam continually. And how amazeballs McCathy was.

McCarthy was good in fairness! But yes, Burns was the best 10 on the pitch tonight.

Why do I have a feeling the phrase "Dublin media" is going to appear at some point?

    Burns had a great game.

McCarthy was the best player on the pitch tonight.

Prendergast is 20 and played well enough for his age and experience.

    He was the best player.

    Three kick try assists?

No, but it's more important that McCarthy is celebrated.

You're going to have to explain what's wrong about praising an excellent performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,337 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

    No, McCarthy wasn't. Burns was.

I know Prendergast is 20. Huge potential, and will be in the Ireland team before long, rather than Burns ever getting there.

But you know what? It's alright to say he wasn't the gee-whiz best 10 tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,885 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

    People aren't saying he was.

Murphy seems to ref it like it's a kids game, go easy on one team to give them a chance and then swing back towards the other team to keep it close. His breakdown interpretation is bizarre.

HarryB getting it in the neck here is not fair.

Leinster look like a side that doesn’t yet know how they should be playing.

Disjointed in both attack and defence.

Nienaber is only getting his feet under him after his post WC tour of SA.

Goodman is probably feeling the squeeze from the new “senior coach” of 6-2 and kick ball mantra.

It was hideous when Joe Schmidt was been questioned when he arrived because we could all see what was evolving.

From what I’ve seen to date….Why the hell did we bring Neinaber in?

To aim to play like SA?

Who is saying that? You're having an argument with nobody.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,370 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

I've not once said that Prendergast was the best 10 tonight. You've decided that.

With the amount of possession and territory Leinster had, losing that game is a really bad reflection on our coaching team.

    Created nothing really.

    Dave_The_Sheep:

    Read Cleggs' posts, mate.

I don't think anybody did. Burns was excellent. McCarthy was.

Enjoy the win. It was well earned. It just seems odd looking for an argument that isn't there.

I think you'll need to. I was happy with how Prendergast played.

Tell me where I said he was the best 10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,337 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Sorry Clegg - Did you say he was good?

    Or the best player?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,885 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

He was talking about McCarthy. Not Prendergast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,370 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

What's most frustrating outside of the defensive inaccuracies is that Ulster's lineout imploded. They had no reliable way to relieve pressure, but I don't think we ever really exploited that in the second half.

Lads, Clegg said McCarthy was the best player on the pitch.

Maybe the confusion (which I must have added to) is that I responding to the commentators, who spent 60% (on Viaplay) taking about how lovely Prendergast .

On the bright side, Top of the table, a week off and fully locked and loaded for Europe.

A team playing together every week defends better, this was a scratch side. Glass definitely half full

    Happy 2024

Yes. And he was wrong. I'm glad that your second row can be busy and get a few extra yards. He's a great player. Meanwhile Burns kicks three try assists, out-foxing the Nienaber defense, but no-one gives a shite.

Out of interest, who won MVP?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,370 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Positives are McCarthy continuing to improve and Baird yet again taking apart another sides lineout. Our bench also made a positive impact in terms of keeping up territorial dominance.

We're currently unable to exploit that dominance, but hopefully that'll come in time. Getting Ross Byrne back would go a long way. He'll never be a top class 10, but he's the best decision maker of all the current options available.

Harry didn't lose us the game by any stretch but he lost a brilliant chance to smash and grab it when we had momentum and some field position. He's not a clutch performer and mistakes like that are why he won't be Leinsters starting 10 when Ross is fit.

I'm not arguing - nor did I ever - who the best player on the pitch was, nor who the best 10 was. I pointed out, accurately, that nobody had said that Prendergast was the best 10 on the pitch, even Clegg. That's all I said. You were making that up and arguing with yourself. Given you posted something very similar - if not nearly word for word - half way through the game in the Ulster thread, you had a chip on your shoulder about the Leinster-centric focus Prendergast was getting and decided to take it here as well. That's just my read on things though. I won't be responding on the matter (Prendergast, Burns, McCarthy, etc) again.

Like I said earlier in the thread, congrats on the win. I thought Burns was great tonight, easily the best 10 on the pitch and he stitched Leinster up like a kipper multiple times from hand. Ulster managed the second half superbly without a lot of possession and some of the defense at the end was fantastic. It's a great result for Ulster.

    Enjoy the win!

Just re-watched the final 10 minutes. Really can't understand the thought process behind JGP going for a three man miss pass.

We weren't playing under penalty advantage so it wasn't a free hit. We didn't have a man advantage and the Ulster defence was set. But the biggest sin was him ignoring that our pack was actually steadily grinding down Ulster's. We had started on the 22 metre line and got to a metre out after playing a dozen phases. He had Boyle and Sheehan outside him waiting for the pop pass. A few more phases of direct carrying would have seen us cross the line.
