No doubt they are on a bad run of results but this is also by far the toughest stretch of fixtures they will have all season.

Bulls, Leinster, Bordeaux, Saracens, Ulster & Munster.

Could easily have won both the Leinster and Ulster games but didn't. Munster the last one to come on NYD.

The schedule does ease up a bit in the 2nd half of the season as we still have a lot of the Welsh teams, the Italian teams and the other two South African teams to play at home.

I have a wishful thinking that Connacht may win against Lyon. Yesterday Lyon was beaten by Bouldeaux (10-46).They currently at 12th place of Top 14. Next week they 'll fight against Montpellier (13th place). Maybe it'll be harsh game, ( I think that they are worried the relagation or play-off.) After to Connacht match they'll fight against Saracens and Tourouse. Although there is a very small hope, but Connacht may find some chances at Lyon away from home. They have very heavy PRs(130kg class) and their total pack weight is 940kg. If Connacht FW can deal well to it, Connacht will find a winning chance hopefully. Paddy Jackson now at Lyon.I miss him although his own scandal.

Lyon were leading 11-10 before their tight head lock Romain Taofifenua got sent off.

Bordeaux put them to the sword after that.

I hear that Kilgallen did his hamstring again, bad one, he's going to be out for months. Tough luck for the lad, he had been going very well.

Some of our selections this season have been really strange, it's hard to see what the logic is and sometimes feels like we're throwing **** at the wall to see what sticks. In the back three, we've rotated Kilgallen, Smith, Bolton, and now Jennings in and out to the point that each has gotten a bit of exposure but imo none have gotten enough sustained gametime thus far to develop effectively. We also picked McNamara on the bench for the first few games before banishing him to the AIL. We dropped Tom Daly and Jordan Duggan in at random for key away games with no follow up. I understand wanting to spread the gametime but one start in 9 months is not going to keep a player like Daly happy anyway. Dylan Tierney-Martin has seemed to fall out of favour out of nowhere. Niall Murray is out and Darragh is in, although in fairness Niall hasn't been at his best so I don't mind that. I think we've chosen untimely games to rotate Joyce out. He should start every game if fit, at least until Thornbury gets back to his best.

Our attacking shape is very average. The u20s played a very similar system under Sexton, which I thought made sense with underage players and limited time together, but I don't think it's suited to this level. We are often far too flat and when we do play out the back it's lethargic and easy to read. As an aside, our hyper focus on support players "tackling the tackler" has often left the ball completely exposed to a jackal.

No one has a dought that professional rugby is not only sports but entertaiment. At last week's match, Hansen worked hard and well, but looked to have no trying-chance. Many fans disappointed him who is the best try -getter in this country to receive almost no chace ball. I want to know how do Connacht atacking coach or HC think about it. On the other hand, another exactly same player knocked-on just in front of gall line of Ulster (each 1st, and 2nd half). Both timings of mistakes was the big chances for Connacht. I think that Connacht shuld not use such a player who tend to fall in panic even his higher skill.- Next match will be must win one. I hope a good result.

Munster will be sending a fairly depleted squad up to Galway by the looks of things

Last game of this block of league games, 4 pts would be very welcome.

7 winnable league games after that, we are going to need a fairly good run of form.

    Out-half is the biggest problem.

We have lots of issues but you have to fix 10 first to see exactly where you are at.

I’d argue the lineout is more concerning. Carty and JJ both looked better against Ulster but neither are long term options

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 859 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

I think Carty is our senior man, he's got a much higher ceiling than JJ imo and while he can run hot and cold he is vital to our season.

Play him every week unless injured.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,044 ✭✭✭connachta

kicking game to the posts (and touch) inclines to JJ though, even if the latter's not perfect either

it's losing 5/7 with JJ per game as Carty creates tries more often or losing 6 with Jack as he misses kicked pens/lineouts which would have led to pens

    not a huge gap overall...

Would Forde be useful as a goal-kicking fullback perhaps? Hawkshaw and Aki could rotate at 12. I wouldn’t object to starting Carty for his distribution but would not let him goal-kick nor let him kick penalties to touch. There has to be someone in team that can kick penalties to touch instead of him.

Considering Munsters injury worries in the pack, I’d love to see Joyce and Thornbury start together at lock. This could give Connacht a real physical advantage. I’d go for something like:

    Buckley DTM Bealham

    Joyce Thornbury

    Prendergast Jansen SHL

    Blade Carty

    Bundee Farrell

    Hansen Porch Bolton

McElroy Dooley Aungier N Murray Oliver McDonald JJ Forde

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭kita99

According to Rugby news 42, Jansen looks good for Munster match. I think that no need double fly halves. So one of then (Carty, JJ or Hawkshaw) shuld start and Forde will be the covering FH and CTB. And I wonder whether team mates can put any confidence on Oliver who knocked -on twice in the just front of opponent gall-line. So, I think if they recover from the injury, Dowling (shoulder) or Boyle(eye) are better than him. If not, put one more Lo(D.murray). We have seen oftenly both Murrys have run fast and tackle strongly. They can deal with break downs. Line out issue may be resolved by ithis (4 strong catchers). And at 23, if possible it'sJennigs as the fresh source of scoring.

With the expected Munster absentees, Connacht should go hard after the set piece. They've their own issues there but Munster are likely to have Eoghan Clarke throwing in to Beirne and Coombes.

Munster will look to expose the dodgy Connacht defending though and I'd be surprised if they don't get some success there.

Big breakdown performance needed to slow things down. I'd lean towards Munster but if Butler is an enforced starter, I'd make it closer to even.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 859 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

Not often you see a team selected on here that you agree 100% with and this one is no exception😄. Jansen is the only change I'd make, I haven't seen enough positive so far. If Boyle and Sob are injured I'd have either Oliver /shl 7/8 or Butler or Dowling at 6 and Prendergast at 8

I'm not anti Jansen, he looks like he could be really good but sob is really good, Boyle can be exceptional when on form and the others are all known quantities. Plenty of games coming up where Jansen can grow into it, starting with Lyon away.

My first choice preference in the back row based on this season only would be 6. Prendergast 7. SHL 8. Sob

Munster won't be as weak as people think imo.

    Loughman Clarke Archer

    Ahern Beirne

    Jod Hodnet Coombes

    Murray Crowley

    Daly sob Frisch Nash

    Zebo

Wycherley ANO Jager Patterson Scannell Kendallen Gleeson McCarthy

That's a pretty decent side, Scannell will come in ahead of Butler imo if Crowley is an enforced absentee

They could do a lot worse than giving Shane Delahunt a buzz and see if he fancies a month of rugby

Shame that O'Brien got injured v Ulster. He was playing great. Connacht got a good player in him.

And this technical analysis is about right for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,511 ✭✭✭Wegians89

Looks like Jansen is out anyways, had put him in as I knew the other two were defo out.

Presume it’ll be 6 SHL 7 Oliver 8 Prendergast 20 Butler but if dowling is fit I’d go 6 dowling 7 SHL 8 Prendergast 20 Oliver, could really target that Munster lineout .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,096 ✭✭✭Shelflife

    A few issues for me.

The lineout is terrible were 10th of 16 in the URC, get into a good attacking position only to turn the ball over and see all the good work undone.

Jack at OH simply isn't doing it, he plays so far back these days that he's simply not an attacking threat. It makes him very easy to defend against as he never attacks the line like he used to. Many of his passes are simple shovel passes to a runner. In the last two games that he played he wasn't the first receiver on numerous occasions with the forwards and center's taking the ball up.

Blade is a good player but as a previous poster said he's infuriating when he is flapping his arms looking for a penalty instead of getting the ball away. I'm not sure if its his fault or the other players but at times he appears not to know which way (left or right) to go or else the runners he expects to be there aren't there.

We transition so slowly when there's a turnover, we might gain 20m from a turnover but we invariably lose 30-40 metres when we lose the ball.

We give away so many soft penalties especially in kicking range, see the Ulster game where we gave away a pen in front of the posts for not rolling away.

The way we interact with the officials is terrible, we seem to be whining at them all the time instead of picking our battles with them, we dont seem to adjust to what the referee is looking for during the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,876 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Agree strongly with pretty much all of this, although I do think Carty may be playing the system, as he attacked the line much more aggressively up to last season. Hanrahan tends to play very deep also and shovel ball to static runners etc.

Your last point is one I agree with strongly and have done for some time. I noticed it especially at Eagles games back in the day, where you can hear the moaning much more clearly without crowd noise. Thankfully we have stopped counting down from five when an opposition scrum half was preparing a box kick - you are never going to get the decision and it drives referees mad. Blade reminds me of Jamie Ritchie as captain, which is not a good thing. Constant discussion and blatant negative body language is not going to endear him to any ref, and he has been warned at least once this season about his referee interactions.

So this is my belief. Caolin sits on his arse waiting. It kills the momentum. Jack/JJ sit around and they have nothing to offer. But as realhorrorshow says both of them sit back in the line, JJ more than Jack. So there is no go forward. And because you are sitting back the only option is to kick posession away. Headwrecking. Anyway looking forward to Lyon more for the holidays than the game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,803 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

It is amazing that Caolins behaviour and our out halfs behaviour is acceptable. It is left to the rest of the team to suffer their poor choices

This is what I'm saying. Get an out-half and it all changes. The scrum-half takes his cues from his no.10. It mightn't stop his moaning but he'll move the ball when he has a good 10 outside him.

I think Blade is good enough but he hasn't a half back partner to get the best out of him.

Edit to add: It's not that hard to find a decent out-half. I watch southern hemisphere and see the depth in South African and New Zealand teams.

I'm sure some of those third choices would love the opportunity to come to Connacht with the opportunity to start and potentially make a name for themselves and the chance to maybe put the hat in the ring to play for their country.

The Blues, Crusaders and Hurricanes have great depth, same with the Sharks and Bulls.

I'm sure there's a few clubs closer to home in a similar situation.
