The main (only?) reason you're not seen by a driver is when they have their head in a phone and "multitasking". Hope you get 100% sorted @monkeyslayer

Might actually get a reasonable sentence with it being a Garda that she hit. Anyone else on a bike and the same injuries and would be a slap on the wrist at most.

I had one last week where a driver entered a roundabout near Grange Castle as I was on the roundabout. Only for me anticipating his move prevented him from hitting me. Again, I followed him to the next set of lights and he apologised and said that he didn't see me (despite front light, street lights, high viz and the fact that I had clearly entered the roundabout as he was approaching the yield line (which he didn't stop at)

Were you driving a white van near Grange Castle last Wednesday night by any chance? 🤣

I've never liked cycling along that road (R403 Celbridge Rd) and tend to opt for Tubber Lane which is waaaaay more quiet and too narrow for most to try and overtake.

edit: I'm reminded of MINI driver overtaking me just past the junction where your video was recorded...

I had similar, though thankfully did see him in time so his living sh1t stayed in place. It made me aware of what an impediment to vision the pillars on modern cars are, and has been a lesson taken on board ever since.

Getting stuck in traffic and watching you pass them by 😁

Perhaps, but 1. They lorry shouldn't have overtaken and 2. the lorry shouldn't have closed the gap

Cycling was in the process of filtering past slower moving traffic when things started to speed up again.

Had a nasty incident last night around 8:20 coming through Liffey Valley and taking the roundabout towards Lucan. Grey Merc with no lights on entered the roundabout behind me crazy close, beeping their horn and then floored it and overtook and left hooked me down towards Fonthill. A couple of drivers stopped to see if I was okay.

My camera’s battery was flat so didn’t capture it.

He's in some rush to get around that black car at the end of the video too, absolute knob.

I had a near miss last night on Tubber Lane as I travelled from Hazelhatch towards Lucan. I turned a bend on this narrow lane and a spotted a woman walking ahead on the LHS (and walking away from me 🙄). Called out "bicycle on your right", she turned, saw me and then for whatever reason moved straight into my path. Wet rim brakes pulled hard and managed to avoid her but only just.

(The woman was in black clothes but yet with my bike lights I still managed to see her in plenty of time!)

See, we know you are lying.

There's no way you could have seen her with bike lights when motorists can't see anyone dressed in black even with full beams

Whenever I meet pedestrians who are walking in the cycle lane next to the footpath they always, no matter what, double down and keep to the cycle lane. It’s like they are allergic to the footpath. I’ve tried to modify my position, dismount, point, even stopped and asked why they do it and I’m non the wiser.

One evening recently I was coming home and there was a woman and her teenage daughter walking in the cycle lane with their back to me. I rang my bell well in advance and let my free hub rattle as I slowed right down. As soon as I said “excuse me” the daughter moved to the footpath but her mother grabbed her arm and pulled her back into the cycle lane. WTF? 🤷‍♂️

People definitely seem to have an instinct reaction to move into the path of whatevers coming behind them anyway. Notice it all the time when I'm jogging and go to pass someone.

Heard a dad joke today "Why do you never see elephants hiding in trees?" "Because they're so good at it" and it reminded me of all those invisible cyclists in black.

Over the last two days I've been given quite a few close passes, mostly from lazy driving. Had a taxi driver yesterday evening pass me quite closely. I caught up with him at a set of red traffic lights in Newcastle (Co. Dublin) and as his window was half down I just said in "if you are unable to overtake safely then maybe driving isn't the career choice for you" and moved in front. He shouted out his window to me "I didn't see you" with a look of seriousness. This was despite me having a hi-viz ankle band, a luminous yellow backpack, a solid red light, a flashing red light and a spinning red light around my Cycliq camera lens. Plus it wasn't dark! I just gave him the "are you a fuppin eejit" look before the light went green.

Today however, I was treated to a few close passes whilst out with the club. The worse was someone on really important business driving outside Intel who felt the need to beep us several times before skimming past us just to make sure we knew how badly we ruined his day 🙄

A lot of those "I didn't see you"s are just "**** you"s in disguise. They saw you all right. Easiest reply they can hit you with is "I didn't see you".

Oh I'm well aware that the taxi driver saw me. He even moved out slightly to get past me. It was more the absolute stupidity of his comment given the amount of crap I carry to make me visible (plus he was well able to see me when we were talking).

But that's the point, it's not a stupid comment: it's designed to antagonise. It has purpose.

She got a "proper" sentence because he is a Garda inspector; simple as that.

I guess you can only go so far when it comes to legislating for what is essentially rude behaviour as opposed to dangerous behaviour. (And the behaviour of other cyclists during peak commute time does annoy TF out of the me but it's generally just rude behaviour as opposed to actually dangerous behaviour).

As an aside, I generally feel less aggrieved about someone on an e-bike ploughing through to the top of the queue of cyclists at red lights as I know that at least they won't be holding people up on the other side. The slow cyclist whom everyone just overtook shoving their way to the top of the queue again on the other hand...

Have had that discussion/argument with a few cyclists/commuters up and down the quays over the past few years. Narrow cycle lanes so not always possible to overtake and when you do they shoal at the next set of lights and often plough through them for the process to begin again. Some cyclists are genuinely baffled that their actions are annoying, others are somewhat apologetic and others just double down on the rudeness.

One that really took the biscuit earlier this year was a middle aged female cyclist on the south quays sauntering along on a Dutch style hybrid. I overtook her 5 times from before O'Connell bridge to the entrance of the Phoenix Park. After the 3rd overtake I advised her if she abided by the rules of the road and didn't keep breaking red lights I wouldn't have to keep overtaking her, by the 5th time she had a go at me shouting that I needed to mind my own business. Well when you actions impact me then it's also my business.

I think you need to mind your own business too and concentrate on your own cycling. I'd never give out to another like what you're doing. Plus, I avoid cycle lanes if I can.

Not a close pass as such (was less then 1M just the same), but the obsession with MGIF is just idiotic in this country

So it seems that the plan for an online portal to report dodgy driving will be predominantly offline based...

@Pawwed Rig Sorry to hear and fair play reporting it although I would similarly have little confidence in action. What type of bus or company was it? If a Dublin Bus (perhaps Bus Éireann also) you can request footage of the incident which involves you under GDPR which would certainly help your case. If a private bus company report the incident to them also, they might take more action than the guards but advise them it's with the guards also.

Witnessed (not a near miss but) an actual hit today on a club spin with a fairly large group. At one point near Donedea, we all pulled over into a property entrance as one of the lads got a puncture. As most of us were standing around chatting, we noticed a cyclist coming down the road towards us with a red VW Golf being driven close behind. Along the road outside every house entrance were the blue domestic recycle bins, clearly left in place after they were emptied.

Anyhow as the cyclist went past us, most of us were looking at the bike, etc (as you do), when the driver of the car right behind the cyclist hit the bin outside the house across the road and sent it flying in the air and it landed with a fairly loud bang. The driver kept going - didn't slow down at all - but this was probably because they didn't want to stop across the road from a group of lads busy laughing at such incompetence.

    20240203_101041.jpg

One of the lads moved the bin into a safer position but if you look hard enough at the above photo, you'll see that it wasn't wearing high-viz so maybe you wont see it either!
