The Department of Education is trying to fill eight post-primary teaching vacancies (there are no primary school teaching vacancies for 2022-23; see link below) in the European schools. The closing date is tomorrow week, Monday 16 January. In 2022, there is a total of 14 European Schools across the EU (locations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_School#Locations)

Here is the list of European Schools, and subjects, where vacancies are for the 2022 recruitment round: https://www.gov.ie/en/service/0148c-secondment-of-teachers-to-european-schools/#secondary-school-secondments
.... Each post is a secondment for a maximum term of nine years. A working knowledge of a community language other than English or Irish is required. Knowledge of the language of the place of employment is particularly desirable. Spoken competence in this language will be tested at interview
Details and application form here: https://educationposts.ie/post/view/163978

    -----------------------------

Has anybody here taught in one of these schools? How strict are they on the language requirement at interview? For instance, how many Irish teachers (other than teachers of Italian) applying to teach science or history or Maths in the European School in Varese in Italy would be able to do an interview in fluent Italian? Is there a shortage of candidates because of this? Are the holidays shorter than in Ireland, but the school days also shorter?

Be interested to hear of these experiences also

I'm keeping an eye out for these jobs this year. While I have never taught in a European school I have corrected the International Bac (Leaving Cert equivalent) in Brussels for several years.

As far as I know the language requirement isn't too strict, but a few basics and a willingness to learn would be a plus. From going over to the schools on several occasions I can say the facilities are top class and any of the teachers I have spoken to are very positive about the experience of working in a European school (multicultural environment, financially worthwhile etc.) The summer holidays would definitely be shorter and I would guess the hours taught per week would be slightly reduced compared to an Irish timetable (not 100% on this).

Last year there was a job I wanted to apply for but as I was only qualified in one of the two subjects required my application was automatically dismissed. So for instance if they are looking for a history and geography teacher someone qualified in history and English won't be able to apply.

Would also love to hear from anyone with experience in the system!

Only problem is the rent you have to pay is so high in those countries that any extra income earned goes on living costs, so it's not financially profitable.

Brussels is not cheap but nor is Dublin. There are European schools in lower cost of living cities/ countries too. Rents in Alicante are hardy exorbitant?

No jobs advertised for 2024/25 as of yet. Is it not a bit late as they usually advertise in Nov/Dec and it's already nearly mid-Dec? Or am I looking in the wrong place?

Secondments to the European Schools have now been advertised. A few Irish and English teacher jobs going if anyone is qualified in those subjects. Nothing for me unfortunately.
