Nightly interruption of water supply this week.

Every night since last Monday, the water supply in Cavan town has been switched off from 11 o'clock until 7 o'clock the following morning because, according to Irish Water, an "issue with supply pressure" in the reservoir.

How is it that the water system could be in such a bad state as to necessitate nightly switching-off of supply? Surely, the fact that Christmas is 3 weeks away wouldn't lead to a serious increase in the amount of water used in an urban area this week, would it?

Yes it is that bad, hence why we needed water charges!

Irish Water say it’s because of repair works, and it’s only lasting one night:

”A reservoir interruption may cause supply disruptions to Cavan Town and surrounding areas in Co. Cavan.

Works will now take place from 11pm on 2 December until 7am on 3 December.”

The issue has been there all week but repairs are being done today. It happens. Pumps fail. Relax!

We've had water restrictions in Trim for the past 2yrs or more, often without warning, from 10pm to 6am, sometimes 4 or 5 times a week.

Building up the town with so many new homes yet not doing a thing for the infrastructure.

Is there any truth in this story published in the Meath Chronicle on 29 August 2023? If it is true, then saying that nothing is being done is wrong. Plus there are other reports of works being done in Trim.

Here is another one from mid 2022, saying that 1.7 kilometres of pipework in Trim had been replaced because it was in bad condition. If it is true then the statement that not a thing is being done would be false.

Not saying that wasn't done, but then another issue pops up, at 1 point the plant was going offline because they needed a spare part from Germany IIRC and were unable to get it due to some reason or another

This is why we have water storage tanks in our attics, a situation that is alien to people in many countries where everything is run directly off the mains water supply. Maybe if we didn't have such tanks the pressure(no pun intended) on Irish water to solve problems more quickly would be greater.

well....if you were after dropping a mega-dump and were on the third flush and it still hadnt cleared the pan and on the fourth attempt the tanks were gone dry it would be more then a minor triviality...

From Irish water…

“For some regions, supplies are nearing their maximum capacity. A growing population in Ireland puts more demand on our water resources. By 2044, we expect to need around 40% more treated water.”

^ but ‘now’ some regions are meeting maximum capacity so in 5 years….? Never mind 2044.

They also say…

“About 38% of Ireland’s drinking water is lost to leaks before it reaches our taps. The leaks can be in the public water infrastructure or in private homes and businesses.”

both scenarios would make you come to the conclusion that this is something we’ll need to get used to, water shortages….. 🙄

So the population is only going to grow much faster, without the ability to make necessary and sustained investment in other crucial services, so im guessing water shortages will just be another normal facet of our lives now…

If the engineers are good at their jobs then they'll solve problems in the system as soon as possible, regardless of storage tanks in people's houses.

Surely, the engineers do everything in their power to stop the leaks, don't they? Obviously, systems of all types have flaws but stopping the leaks can't be as difficult as playing whack-a-mole, can it?
