VW Golf mpg

My wife recently got a 2013 Golf, 1.6 diesel but the mpg isn’t what she’s expected and she said it’s drinking diesel, she was driving a 1.6 diesel A3 and said it had much better economy.

The other day it used 1/4 of a tank on an 80km round trip motorway journey. I had a look online and some are saying there could be something to do with the fuel injectors.

Does anyone have any suggestions on anything else it could be. It was only recently serviced too so theres no leaks or anything like that.

It was only serviced on Friday and there were no sign of any leaks or anything like that. Nothing on the driveway either.

If it did use quarter tank (50 litre tank isn't it) then that's about 16 l per 100kms which is above twice what I'd expect, possibly 2.5 times. Something wrong with car for sure, does it feel low on power?

yeah I was thinking it was using way more than it should. She filled it up before she went and a 1/4 of it was used when she got back. No it doesn’t feel low on power and it’s driving grand just drinking the juice

She had said it to me about it using too much but the other day was the first decent drive she’s took it on and she said she could literally see the needle going down as she drove 😂😂😂

Top it up before and after a journey to calculate true consumption, needle or computer or whatever you are using to gauge consumption might be off. No way a healthy diesel golf is using that much fuel.

Thats 3 litre performance v6 consumption territory

If you calculate it and it's still off, you've a problem that needs looking at or car moved on

Yes, proper calculation needed before any conclusions. A 1/4 tank is too subjective.

50L tank.

Getting 80km per ¼

That's 320km on a full tank.

You must have a leak, is it even possible to burn that much.

It was just a mechanic friend that serviced it and changed the timing belt. Would I be better off bringing it to a VW garage and see if they can find a fault. There’s definitely something not right when it’s using so much.

You'll pay big money to have a VW garage look at it. As it's an older car a good independent garage would be best.

Suggest you pass no heed whatsoever to what the gauge is telling you they are totally inaccurate.

1 . Fill the tank to the brim. Zero the trip meter

2 . Drive for few hundred k . Read the trip meter

3 . Refill tank and calculate..

Simple solution without going near any VW main dealer who will charge you an arm and a leg for anything.

I’ve got a 2017 model which averages 45Mpg ( pardon the old school ) between city and motorway driving and can easily achieve 60 mpg on motorway alone.

What does the trip computer say it’s doing, it should have long term, since refuel, and trip data.

Thats alot of fuel of be going through. I easily get around 140miles before my MK6 golf has used 1/4 tank.

Fuel leak

A tooling issue at the factory meant that some examples were fitted with engine cylinder heads that were not produced to the correct specification. This could then lead to an issue with the fuel rail loosening over time and allowing fuel to leak, with the potential for an engine fire.

I'm assuming the leak would manifest itself as a rising oil level as the fuel gathers in the sump. Op, have a check of the oil level and sniff the dipstick to see if it smells of diesel.

so obvious issues first, drive the car for 20 min then check the break calipers on each wheel, to me it soulds like a busted caliper.

other issue would be a very badly slipping clutch, but break caliper is the most stand out issue.

Could be going into DPF regeneration mode to frequently, this drinks juice as it uses diesel injected into the DPF to clean it. Some of this diesel finds its way into the sump and causes rising oil levels.

Lots of short journeys can cause the car to get stuck in regeneration mode as it never gets to complete the cycle so it triggers each time the engine starts.

Worth investigating, but if it is you need a new DPF at significant cost.

Just because a car is regenerating too often doesn’t mean you need a new DPF. Quite the opposite actually.

It may not but DPFs have a finite life and once they get clogged with ash they need replacing.

What's the idle speed? It should be around 800rpm if it's around 1000rpm it could be constantly doing a regen.

I fail to understand why with nothing other than the appearance of the fuel gauge to go on this car is in a garage.

The most simple test of filling the tank, zeroing the trip meter, driving for a few hundred kilometres and refilling the tank then calculating usage would prove if there was a problem before throwing money at a garage.
