Did you need any upgrades on your end? Are your tails 16 or 25sq?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,319 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

I should have said the connection to the house didn't need changing.

I had new 25mm² tails and a new consumer unit in, (the one that it replaced was the original one from 1980 not a RCD in sight, only other thing was no earth to lights, so class 2 lights only.)

I had my smart Day/Night meter installed on October 31st, but just logged into Electric Ireland and they are still estimating my usage..

I thought smart meters had done away with estimation?

or is it a case that ESBN will have the accurate data, and will only send that to EI every 2 months or so? and in between, EI can still estimate my usage if they want.....?

So I should still read the meter myself and submit the readings to EI as I did before?

No, no need to ever read / submit data with a smart meter. Give it a few more days and it might show up. ESB are all over the shop though, you never know what data for what period you might see online. Sometimes it's just for 1 or 2 days, several weeks back. And it is never up to date, always about 2 days stale at best. Which is frustrating, there shouldn't be any reason why this data isn't real time.

I submitted a reading anyway.. and it then immediately re-calculated their 'estimate' based on what I submitted

edit.. I think I mixed up days and nights!!

yeah, better to just leave the fecker...

Status Red wind warning... upping my battery charge rate to fill the batteries as soon as possible once night rate kicks in!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,221 ✭✭✭✭unkel

    You're in Dublin, no? 😂

Not even a status red over here. And should you not fill battery as much as you can anyway during cheap night rate hours?

Normally fill them slowly over the 9 hours.

Dublin was upgraded to red warning about an hour ago.

So it has, checked the forecast a wee while back myself.

Batten down the panels lads 😁

Irish rail warning that the trains will be limited to 80kmh. Brilliant, should actually get in quicker if they travel at that speed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭DC999

How slowly out of curiosity? We charge our Leaf to 100% each night as it's a small battery. So the range matters in winter. Don't have a house battery.

I did consider dropping the charge speed to help reduce deterioration. But couldn't find any decent sources online that showed any benefit for that slower filling.

OK, it's a balancing act with the cheap night rate too.

In theory, the slower you charge and discharge your battery, the longer it lasts and the less degradation you have. In practice, this is a load of bollocks, you battery will last anyway, charge the bejaysus out of it!

You don't need to worry about reducing AC charging at home, zero impact on battery

    Airloom

Anybody heard of this? Basically claims it can bring total production cost of electricity downb by two thirds to $0.013 per kWh. Bill Gates put in some serious dough

The article doesn't come up with any credible reason why this method of wind is so efficient / cost effective

It's a little bit more believable than "solar fricking roadways" but I'll believe it when I see it.

If it works it will catch on, but there's a lot of moving parts there too.

Looking at their website a wind tree will set you back 50,000 for 10.8kW system!!! If money is tight go for a wind bush at 18,900 euro (3.6 kW) 😀

Heath Robinson engineering. Blades sliding around in a track (on rollers?).Tied to each other by cables/chains running in the track? Loose? Under tension? and the power take off, is it geared, or toothed into the loop of chain? The whole thing is like a giant medieval threshing mill. Can you imagine the the noise? Like a permanently moving roller coaster. The maintenance overhead would be horrendous.

Yet Bill Gates threw several million at them. But maybe it's the most effective for Bill Gates to throw several million at any new energy project, eventually there will be one that will make him a few billion 😂

Personally it reminded me of vertical wind turbines. Had one of those, doesn't work (in a suburban setting)

4 million from 130 billionish net worth, Pocket change lol.

I suppose if you have the space for the vertical wind turbines, you have space for a "proper" one!

perhaps, but not with our Planning restrictions, can't be attached to house building, full ground clearance etc.

Can anyone spot the biggest waste of a new building (building is not in frame)

Also no charge points under so I guess it's all for FIT 🤣

I think there are some sort of uprights at the top of each covered parking space, for a charger cable or a yet to be installed larger unit. Looking again, I think its just the road fence. The only waste I see is that it's empty. Obviously pay parking. Maybe not open yet? Right hand drive, so here, UK, Oz or Japan? They've something like this at Wicklow County Council.

Yeah it's that new building in Airside, not open yet but completed for some time, owned by good ol Michael O'Leary so money is not an issue.

A bit to the side, in front of the building itself, there are a whopping 4 EV spaces so I think the panels are for the building itself.

150+ (26 across, 6 rows). Or 15 gaffs worth (if we average 10 panels per house). Class to see large arrays being added in a public space over here.

Car park space roofed is about 12m², or 2.4kw peak solar power. In a working day one space would charge a car sufficiently for a commute, and top it up at least in winter. Obviously not all spaces will be in use for charging or parking, power to spare, so your business car park is a perfect vehicle emissions free car charging solution. Staff or customers wouldn't mind paying for parking if it offset home charging costs. The greens won't buy it though, they hate car use, especially for work commutes.
