The Performance is class alright. I'd either go RWD or P (if you can afford it)

Stop encouraging me😂 As a matter of interest do you have any view on whether it is worth paying any more for the extra efficiency afforded from the heat pump in the refreshed 21 model?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,228 ✭✭✭✭unkel

    No.

But that's me, I would struggle to justify paying anything extra for stuff I don't really need or doesn't really add that much in terms of comfort or value. If I were in the market for a Model 3 right now, I would simply order a Highland

That said, I test drove a 232 Model 3 RWD a few days ago and it really is a very good car for the money already. I was far more impressed with it than with the current Model Y RWD. The discount on one compared to the superior new model is simply not big enough though.

I would normally have agreed that a heat pump is not worth the money, the payback probably a hundred thousand kms or more. However now that I have one standard in my Model 3 I must say I do like it. Maintaining a warm car doesn't appear to have such a hit on range as other cars we have have/had. Means that in the colder months I don't have to stop to charge on my regular 280 to 300km Dublin airport or Cork runs. Many newer cars have it now as standard, happy days..🙂

There's no denying a heatpump makes a big difference in winter range compared to resisitive heating. In your case it makes the difference of not having to stop on a regular trip. That's a big benefit for sure.

It's funny now that my main two EVs are a 2014 BMW (with heatpump) and a 2017 Tesla (without heatpump). My first EV was a brand new €25k Ioniq which indeed also had a heatpump and a huge spec in general for such a cheap car.

Just to be clear the M3 does use resistive heating and a heatpump, but I do agree the battery usage is largely unimpacted in the colder weather, my return journey commute is 14% in Summer and only on the coldest days does it hit 16% in Winter and for most of Dec/Jan I'll be on restricted regen full time

Any chance of getting this thread back to listing ev deals?

It's like a general chat thread, and there is a thread already there for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,479 ✭✭✭sk8board

It’s more so the mix of EV and non-EV drivers on this thread can have very differing views on what constitutes a ‘bargain’, so each car posted can grow lots of tangents

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭insullation

Which most of the readers on the thread don't care about...They want to see bargains posted. We should have a no chat separate thread where only links can be posted and leave people make up their own minds

I think a lot of readers get value from the chat as there are some knowledgeable people here and there thoughts on whether something is a bargain or not is relevant imo.

The EV bargain thread has always been a discussion related to advertised cars and their worth. A bargain is always subjective and as such leads to discussion. It's a decent catch all thread for people looking to get something of value to them from the 2nd hand market.

Why a given car is worth it or not can change based on market conditions. We'd end up with loads of threads on "is blah good value" if we didn't have this. If you only want price alerts for a given car there is the saved search criteria functionality on the advertising sites.

I think the discussion of the bargains is the best part. But admittedly it can be annoying when theres 20+ posts discussing something completely irrelevant.

tangents because there isn't many EV bargains to be had? 😃

Unless you want a leaf or ioniq

Looks like a great deal. Has the value gone down due to battery replacement?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 181 ✭✭Basilio

I would say opposite, you get fresher battery, almost 0 degradation. Looks like seller is desperate to sell. Dealer would put 20% mark up and sell it for 20500

    A good bargain.

    Looks like a nice spec.

We've seen Kona 64kWh for around the €15k mark. This is a private sale with a car that will be out of warranty in a few months time. Personally I would buy it, but my offer would be substantially lower than the asking price of €17k. Bit of a buyer's market out there now.

That was the cheapest on DD with 169000km, over three times the mileage of one on offer with only 48000km:

Would not agree with statement re buyers market, it does not apply to all models. But it is not the tread for this discussion.

Jan/Feb 2024 will be telling when dealers get another influx of trade ins. ICE diesels may hold up a bit as fuel prices continue to fall in the coming weeks. Electricity prices especially public charging rates will need to fall to help drive demand for used EV’s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,228 ✭✭✭✭unkel

I don't think the price of public charging is that much of an issue, more the availability of them. But yes if people who don't own a parking space at home are to be tempted into EV ownership, these things need to improve. My first question is always do you have or can you get home or work charging. If no to both, I would recommend against getting an EV in general.

That Kona is a decent looking car, is the quoted range realistic ,?

Not in winter and certainly not at 120km/h on motorways, but yeah it's a long range EV for sure. The cheapest long range EV out there. It is very small and the spec is very basic though, even though it cost €39k brand new 5 years ago!

Sorry for Off-topic. As you can see here sales of vehicles are declining, so no increase in supply potentially unless boats of non EV imports from Japan arrive:

Sales of EVs increasing only at 2021

Yeah spec wise it's a no go for me, am spoiled at the moment with heated wheel and seats and never ever going without them again but I do a lot of 600km round trips to the Mammy in Kerry so always interested in what range the cheaper cars can achieve, currently costing about €70 a trip in a petrol Puma

It actually does have heated leather seats, heated steering wheel, and most of the other things you need for everyday use. Automatic lights and wipers, key-less entry.

€1500 taken off this today: had it saved:

    ID4 pro business, 222.

    7000kms and 11 months old.

    €39.8k

its referred to as an excellent ‘electric jeep’ in the text, which is such a fantastic Irish motoring word :)

For a private sale how should one go about purchasing an EV? I know there is an online check for outstanding finance etc. I presume my mechanic wouldn't be much good as he's an ICE expert.
