no he wouldnt really... at least, thats not what is being discussed here. Why sign a 5.5 when we have Ryan Baird already on call?

hes shown very little in the last 2 or so season to suggest hes a worthy of a leinster contract at the lock position, he certainly doesn't deserve to be in the conversation being currently had re international test locks, with the likes of De Jager, Itoje and Snyman named.

Hes plowing his furrow in LAR and fair play to him, but hes really nowhere near the conversation of being a possible Leinster lock right now.

His Contract is due to finish in December this year with no talks of a renewal.

Snyman would be a mistake, imo. He's been of little value for Munster.

Nyakane would be good for a 1 year deal.

I would be surprised if Jenkins got offered premium wages. He's not close to being a high level 2nd row. In fact, I think he's been a poor signing.

Leo needs to start locking lads down. Otherwise we could lose out on premium young lads.

I'm not in the slightest comparing Dillane to those players mentioned. I'm just suggesting he could replace Jenkins. We won't sign players like Skelton or E.E.

    What are you talking about?

Presumably Boyle and McCarthy both being in the academy, don't want to be poached

It feels like Ryan Baird is permanently on the periphery at club and country level. He gets sod all minutes game time and the two positions he plays have way too many players.

Does he need to do something to really nail down a place or is he just one of those players who's a superb athlete but not outstanding enough at one thing to be a regular starter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

He's not got the job done consistently as a 2nd row. He could eventually, but I feel he's better served as a flanker. I assume he's playing this week as he wasn't involved on the weekend. He will probably line out at 6.

He really is a good line out operator and has great size for a blindside. I'd say he's not completely rounded out his game. Still is a damn fine player.

Just read that Sarries are cutting Itoje's pay by almost 50%. He's on around 800k. He's going to France, imo.

I think he will get a lot more game time going forward. It would have required all world play to unseat POM, or a complete loss of form. At Leinster it will be interested to see who is backed at 8. Conan has pretty consistently pushed Doris to 6 when they were both fit, which obviously makes it difficult for Baird to get a look in.

Not so sure Conan pushes Doris to 6 so much as Doris' skillset allows him to play there moreso than Conan's does. Semantics perhaps, but if Leinster were told they could only have one player I'm fairly sure I know which they'd pick.

Rewatching the game back tonight. Jesus, and I know it's been said before, Keenan is such a classy player. It looked at times like he was just several steps ahead of everyone else on the pitch, always in the right position, just gliding around effortlessly doing everything pretty much to perfection. Even for the chase back it looked like he didn't have to try too much as he was jogging back to catch the nippy scrum half break in the second half. The assist for Ringrose was just languid, yeah I'll dummy that, there you go Garry. He makes it all look so easy.

He's without a doubt the best FB in the world, and Ireland's best ever. Absolute Cadillac of a player

I tend to agree, I think he's world class. But it was interesting on Twitter earlier someone posting that and a lot of southern hemisphere people weren't rating him as highly (probably not surprising!)

Iirc, there were a couple of games in Europe last season where Baird was favoured over Conan, leaving Doris to stay at 8. Then as the season pushed on, and especially towards the end of the 6 Nations, Conan recaptured his form. Be interesting to see how it plays our this year.

Ed Byrne back to full training.

If you consider both Barrett backs, Jordan and McKenzie as full backs I can see why.

He's a better full back than all of those. Jordan in particular is a wildly overrated rugby player

The Indo reports that Conan and Henshaw are set to return for the Munster game. We need these lads for the big European fixtures to come, but I'd rather Osborne and one of Penny/Deegan is selected instead. All three have started the season well for Leinster and the former have no real form to speak of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 644 ✭✭✭jonok28

I would like to see them both come off the bench against Munster it would be more impactful and allows for good form to be rewarded.

I think you're fairly on the money here. Nyakane would be an interesting signing and would fill a hole while we develop.

I also think people are wildly overestimating how much money Jenkins is on.

NIQ =/= highly paid superstar in every instance.

Ones value is largely summed up by International Caps and/ or Domestic league success. Jenkins has neither.

A solitary cap for South Africa in a friendly against Wales over 5 years ago (where they lost) and no success of note in Super Rugby or Japan.

We didn't sign him to be a game changer in our strongest 23. How strongly he started last season was a bonus on a player we took a punt on. We only got him due to a clerical error by Munster meant he was available.

In terms of wages I would imagine he is on less than half of what Alaala'toa is on and a good chunk less than what Ngatai is on also.

Think of the likes of Arno Botha for Munster. Decent pro, very few international caps. Can fill a gap and do a job and didn't cost much.

Nyakane wouldn't break the bank and I think he would gladly split minutes with Furlong and make a nice wage. He would give Leinster a definite upgrade at TH and they would get stronger.

In terms of a lock, I can see Leinster looking for a monstrous second row operator who might start but also would be comfortable coming off the bench. Leinster always seem to go under the radar with their signings and rarely sign someone who we expect. If I had to guess, I can see Leinster trying to snag Le Roux Roet from the Sharks. 6"8 and 22 stone, he would be a big bulky signing and might not cost too much.

Obviously I'd prefer a big name like Lood De Jager but Leo isn't answering my calls.... lol

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 36,171 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I can't keep track of the Arnolds' comings and goings. Whichever one is not at Toulouse currently might be worth a shot

De Jager is too injury prone and an international. Another Snyman situation and he's less box office to boot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

If Leinster go loaded this week, do they alter the team for the Connacht match? With La Rochelle around the corner, you'd think that Leo would mix and match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,961 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

    Tough call.

But if we are locked and loaded this week that would mean essentially all of our RWC players have been reintegrated and Leo has a full deck to choose from.

Players of note that will miss out this week would be the likes of Deegan, Baird, Molony, Penny, Osborne, Ngatai etc.

You'd imagine they'd be rotated in for Connacht

I can't see a scenario where the IRFU sign off on signing a guy like Lood de Jager.

Notwithstanding his poor injury profile, he'd cost a lot of money, and the likelihood if he came is he'd be potentially starting in big European games ahead of Joe McCarthy. That's not a positive development for Ireland, even if it makes Leinster stronger and slightly likelier to win a European Cup.

I think it seems unlikely, and the sort of NIQ signing they'll sanction in the second row is likely to be another Jenkins level URC style player. I don't particularly agree with this type of approach, but I think it's the likely IRFU approach.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

I doubt it would be Lood. More likely an under the radar type. Maybe a bokke? I would like Itoje!!!

There is no earthly way it will be Itoje. Leinster won't pay him the £400k he's supposedly being cut to (from his current c. £800k at Saracens). He will absolutely be able to command more than that in France. The IRFU would never sign off on it, and nor should they.
