    What sports are "sh@t upon"?

Or do you just mean unpopular?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,615 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

All the ones that get fek all money. Athletics and cycling for instance.

Pretty much everything except the big 3 team sports, boxing and the betting sports.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 hsushsjvsux

So the less popular sports get less money. Seems logical.

Lot of money in boxing so it has plenty of money.

Betting sports are profitable with bookies so bookies sponsor the sport. Thats just bookies making money what are they going to do sponsor sports people don't bet on.

The big 3 team sports get money cause they are wildly popular.

Sponsorship is advertisement. Where there is a good return on investment is where the money goes.

And government funding is limited so should go to where it benefits the most amount of people so popular sports not niche sports

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,615 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

It's not about some getting less than others. That is logical.

The betting sports are not just about the bookies. They get well publicised government support that other sports don't get and way above their popularity too.

It's how underfunded our sports look compared to similar developed nations that is the issue. Only a few years ago we couldn't afford to send a cycling team to Australia for the World Championships.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,957 ✭✭✭CrabRevolution

I don't see how they are sh@t upon though. 90% of athletics in Ireland is long distance running on roads and parks; the interest in track based events is minimal but we've a lot of running tracks funded by the state. We don't have a huge population of athletics participants starved of facilities.

Similar with cycling. Nearly all cycling in Ireland is just road racing. A single velodrome would probably fulfil our national needs.

If they can't send teams to events abroad, that just speaks to just how unpopular the sport is. Between state funding, sponsorships, fundraising etc. they still can't get the money together?

Well if you think a country being successful at athletics or cycling is just running on a road you don't have a clue and I couldn't be bothered even talking about it further.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,957 ✭✭✭CrabRevolution

The context here is sporting infrastructure. You said cycling and athletics are hard done by in that context.

I'm asking how? What infrastructure do they need that they don't have?

And would this infrastructure you want for cycling and athletics be wildly out of proportion to their popularity?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,538 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

They very much are not treated as well as they should.

Cycling is primarily road rocing but doesnt mean facilities and support isnt right.

Athletics is very much hard done by, More tartan tracks. another indoor arena. are needed.

Seems to have been protests against Casement last night at Windsor. Some fans seem stupid enough to believe Winsor is an option and fans groups saying the money would be better spent on grassroots which is fair enough except Casement need sto get built regardless.

Such a stupid petty little provence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,351 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

Windsor Park certainly isn't an option. Even a competent country wouldn't be able to design, get through planning and build the stands required to bring Windsor to the 30k capacity needed, no way NI would manage to do it. They would need to increase capacity by two thirds and there isn't space to do so without buying out adjacent properties.

There is absolutely no chance Windsor Park could host games at Euro28. If it was suggested, UEFA would immediately reject it as they did with the Belgian stadium for Euro2020.

NI does not eqate to the provence of Ulster. Please don't lump us in with them!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,615 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I meant it as NI being a provence of the UK.

The proposed "plan" for Winsor is for a temporary increase in capacity which would mean buying out adjacent property, knocking it, lifting the brand new roof off of Winsor, building a whole tier of temporary stands and then putting it all back at the end.

All because "we don't want them over there to get something nice"

    Fuking knuckle dragger stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,957 ✭✭✭CrabRevolution

We've had years and years of insistence that the NI fanbase has changed and is now one big non-sectarian happy family where catholics and protestants put politics and religion behind them to join arms to sing GSTQ in Windsor Park and cheer on the GAWA.

But now that there's a chance of NI games being held in Casement Park the NI Supporters trust say NI fans won't be safe in West Belfast.

Seems a bit of a contradiction there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,351 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

That "plan" certainly won't work. The stands weren't designed to take the weight of another tier, you'd have to reengineer the whole thing including foundations. Designing and building that would take longer than building the new Casement.

I still believe Clones is were the Ulster Finals should be kept and it would not take to much to give it an upgrade but the anount od anti casement park articles i am seeing is starting to make me cheer for casement and have it redeveloped

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,615 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

These people are either idiots or pretending to be when they claim that the money should be could on grassroots. It's not a case that NI get money to spend on something and they chose Casement over something else.

It's host the Euros and get the money or don't get the money.

And there are commitments to build Casement anyway and its just a matter of before or after Euros.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,957 ✭✭✭CrabRevolution

    So which is the juicier red herring;

The GAA one where the Casement money should be spent on Clones instead?

Or the Unionist one that it should be spent on grassroots?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,615 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

The GAA one of course forgetting that the British government are not gonna pay for Clones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,351 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

Surely the idea that there is any money at all available is the biggest red herring of them all.

Nobody gets anything, and there are plenty of people who would be delighted with that.

What is going on in Dundalk. According to the Article the GAA HQ told the county board retender and now parts of the main stand have arrived. Talk about smoke and daggers!

It's amazing how Nowlan Park doesn't have floodlights esp with it hosting concerts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭PeggyShippen

Cusack Park in Ennis...zero flood lights and no plan to have them. A complete joke of a situation. They claim its because of residential issues but shur the Galeic Grounds and Thomond Park are lit up at the same time many a night and they are within a km of each other in a big residential area

The new Walsh Park...no lights.. bizarre

    Same situation different residents.

The residents around the Gaelic Grounds tried their best to stop the floodlights which is why they are inside the stands.

It does seem very odd for county grounds to not have floodlights these days.

Maybe they could have asked the question in way Unionists could have given a positive answer.

I.E. 'Would you be happy with Casement if it brought the Euros to NI?' or something like that.

To be fair to moderate Unionists, I think the numbers in favour would have been higher.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭PeggyShippen

Casement Park is in a really Nationalist/Republican area. Crime is rife there and its not a nice place to visit. No offence to any of the locals, there are some fine people there. Then there is the militant Ulster GAA to deal with. The same GAA who name grounds after dead IRA bombers.. Id say most Unionists think they ll arrive at Casement for the football and there ll be a big tri colour snuck up somewhere ,'diddly eye dell do' music and probably public announcements in English and a mangled Irish. That'll be the welcome with open arms the Unionists might expect.

Well then those Unionists and anyone else who thinks that will happen are fuking morons. The GAA will have nothing to do with the running on the day as it will be handed over to UEFA like it always is.

This is the thing that really makes me hate that place at times. Both sides think it was all such a big deal and the whole world gives a **** about their tiny little conflict. UEFA are dealing with Croat fans in Serbia, Turks/Greeks, Armenians/Azeris and used have to deal with Russia vs loads of people.

NI needs to get the fuk over itself.

As for rough area that's most football grounds.

If you don't want lumped in with us then why do you even consider yourself an Ulsterman?

Anyway assuming you are from Cavan that region wasn't historically in Ulster until Queen Elizabeth I added it to the province so Cavan isn't really connected much to us anyway. The fact that they have near enough southern accents shows this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 691 ✭✭✭BaywatchHQ

Judging by comments I've seen on Facebook there are many bitter southerners who aren't happy about Irish government money going towards Casement. They don't seem to realise that it is going to be the home of Ulster GAA so 3 of their counties will play games there too. There will be Ulster semi finals there like there was in the old ground. Even if the Ulster championship ends they could still hold some neutral games there in the group stages. There will also be club games there for example the Ulster club championship in the 3 tiers which will include cross border teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 691 ✭✭✭BaywatchHQ

Any self respecting Catholic wouldn't go to sports games where an Ulster banner is flown. If there are Catholics who attend Windsor Park then they are the posh type of Catholics who live in mixed towns. Rory McIlroy is a good example, he isn't the typical Catholic. Northern Ireland probably have some Catholic fans from middle class towns outside Belfast.

Joe Brolly commented about that situation. He said his first wife was a Catholic from Ballymena which was a different sort of Catholic than somewhere like Dungiven.

Why are you so obsessed with this little "province" then? I've seen you make anti Northern comments for years. Your username always leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
