Straight 6 petrol engines are lovely, refined and bullit proof. The car in general is well made. The €1080 motor tax though if it is only your 2nd or 3rd car!

Tax is a killer but if it was cheaper, the car itself would cost a few gs more, and I'm OK to pay a bit to have a nice comfortable big car for those few weekends away. (its only really a 300 euro premium on a 2 litre car of the same vintage)

Then by all means go and see it. The E60 BMW on non-sports suspension with I6 engine and autobox is very much a nice big comfortable car, in setup it's more like a big cruiser than like a sports saloon.

Bodywork looks a bit rough around the edges and short NCT. I’d offer €2k cash. Anything more is too much considering the above. (And high tax rate)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,826 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

E60s are getting old now and many of them are very tired in that price bracket. If it's being used for wafting around in then I'd consider a v6 Merc E Class.

This looks way fresher than that E60 and has a fresh NCT until Nov 2024, same tax rate as the E60 too but looks posher

It's overpriced for sure but the buyer market for such a car on that tax rate is very small so maybe an offer of 3k would be realistic on it.

Should easily be able to get that for €3k or under, so nice bangernomics machine. I'm no expert on these, but I think that might be a facelift model W211 too, which much improved build quality?

I think the facelift model did improve reliability over the pre facelift model alright. That one has the facelifted exterior door mirrors. No timing chain issues with the 6 cylinder engines either afaik.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,493 ✭✭✭✭unkel

I think the facelift W211 was the first of the "good again" Mercedes cars after their terrible years between 1992 and 2006 or so

https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/lexus-is250-v6/35144719. This looks clean and they're very reliable. Same owner since 2018 too. Looks a genuine car. Should haggle down well on that price too.

Gs300s could be worth a look too but clean ones are a bit thin on the ground.

W211 E Class Facelift had a couple of thousand improvements you can tell a face lift W211 as the headlights have lines across them and preface lift the headlights are clear...

    Facelift version started late 2006

    Very good car

    E46 318Ci

Not a fast car but a great driver's car. "Freude am Fahren!"

All the coupes came with factory sports suspension as standard. Asking €3k

    Mercedes CLK convertible

Late autumn / early winter is the best time of year to buy a convertible as they are cheap as chips. Keep over the winter and enjoy it, give it a clean and put it up for sale in early spring during a few sunny days and you will get more back than you paid for it

    Two great finds.

I am tempted by that CLK even though the ad says ‘need gone’ which I normally run a mile from. I’m no grammar nazi but that just rankles me.

"Need gone" is good. It means "please make me an offer, I am desperate, I will accept anything that's half reasonable, you have me by the balls"

That beemer is trash. 4 pot. You need the 6 pot 2.5 at a minimum.

A load of nonsense. The 2.5 straight 6 is nice and faster of course, but not particularly fast either, an ancient Nissan Leaf driven by an even older granny will be away quicker from the lights. And there is no chance to find an E46 coupe 2.5 with NCT for anywhere near bangernomics money

You need to work these 318Ci hard, but they are built for that. Someone once told me that BMW 3-series are the hardest driven cars in the world. I believed him. Glorious to drive this car, but not fast, like I said.

That 3-Series seems to have the original 1.9 engine which has 117bhp. Not fast, but it's a decent price for what it is. Will probably need new tyres as well. No interior pics is odd.

And you save nearly €400 pa on tax which is alright. Buy it, look after it and you'll get your money back in a couple of years.

4 months test and 2 months tax with the 1.9 TDi for €1,000.

No info in the description, no reg available, no interior pics, but worth a call. Superb's are usually a very solid bus.

Passed the NCT 18 months ago with 101.8k miles on the clock, now 102k miles, so it basically has been sitting. Might not need tyres at all, or might. Sitting is not good either

You can see the 'Advisory' note on the NCT sheet. It's usually for tyres. Still worth a look.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,493 ✭✭✭✭unkel

I spotted that but didn't make the association. You are probably right, those are typically for tyres the way that is looking 😁

Lads, I picked up a Skoda Roomster a few weeks ago for a few hundred euros just so I could insure my classic cars and have a somewhat normal car on the daily as everything else I own is mega impractical.

It's a 1.4 manual petrol and it's incredibly slow, I mean, I genuinely thought it was broken on the test drive slow.

    Love it.

It's such a crap box... It's hideous... But it's damn roomy inside, got her through the NCT, did a passenger and rear seat delete in it, blacked out the windows, built a timber frame inside and thew in a mattress.

    It's amazing!

Looks like you made yourself the cheapest campervan in Ireland 😁

What’s the deal with blocking out the regs? It’s not private information. As soon as you ring you can ask for the reg or when you see it you can do the checks on your phone anyway.

Blocking the reg just puts people off IMO

We've discussed it many, many times on this thread, @hoodie6029 and on other threads in this forum. Some people have an irrational sense of insecurity. Nothing we can do about it. Of course there is also a minority that is more sinister who wouldn't like us to find out more about the dodgy car they have for sale. Indeed like you say, blocked reg plates rightly put off some people - potential buyers

Just don't tell my insurance company!

Honestly lads, there's so much joy in owning an absolute heap of shite, as long as it's mechanically sound and starts every morning. Ya can throw it anywhere, nobody will steal it! Bang a kerb, who cares, it only has hubcaps anyway! Oh you dinged my door, I'll add it to the collection!

Fancy a sleep in the car at lunch break, Skoda Roomster has your back.

Fancy going out to a pub miles away and sleeping in the back, Skoda Roomsters got you baby.

As long as the nice stuff is in the shed and I'm able to go to some shows during the year it's all gravy.

Totally agree. My main car is a fancy Tesla Model S. That said, most of my favourite cars cost me less than €800 😁

I love the look and the practicality of the Roomster. Skoda made some great cars.
