What's the brand of the attic hatch? Might be written on the hinges.

What does the bolt version look like.

I assume you mean I should take the catch off the frame that the door fits into.

No leave it as is, just fit the screw /bolt up a bit from the existing,making sure it does not impede the step

The third from the left in top row would work either, 4 good screws

Had same happen to my own attic ladder a few years ago, ended up fabricating something to suit, but the suggestions made above are what you need, a sash window ring pull would also work very well.
