It's a climate station, they always take a long time to come in. WOW site gives us real time access to the automatic weather stations of some climate stations (we also have Kilkenny and Durrow climate stations thanks to StratoQ and Danno respectively being active with their data on Twitter) but higher values can be achieved on the manual thermometer. Occasionally the Met might comment on them (such as the overcooked Dundalk 29.9C in June) but rarely they do and I don't get it.

The Ashford station I believe belongs to an old Boards poster Mothman but it is an official Met climate station.

Unless it's a very specific use case (like Fastnet with windstorms), I will never talk about non-official stations.

    Today was the best day

Had to put on sun lotion on the head in the afternoon when outside doing jobs. Unreal

Some pretty decent cold pools for October showing up over Europe in fantasy land. Even if we did get an easterly, blocked pattern this winter somehow, I'd be willing to bet all those cold pools would have completely vanished.

you were saying that back in september, trust you to make a negative out of it.

They take forever to verify climate stations is right. It’s almost like they have a bias against them compared to to their offical stations. They haven’t even verified Augusts hottest ever day yet which was in Durrow back in August 2022(32.1c) Instead if you look for Augusts record it just says 31.7c at Oak Park in the same month August 2022. I’m sure it will be verified eventually, you just wonder why it takes so long

Maybe a flake or two mixed in for the highest peaks further North on Sunday.

Last post from me for the night. After a disappointingly cloudy weekend, I loved today in Dublin. Great warm sunshine to be had feeling more like a summery day though without the oppressiveness of the June/July high UV which was lovely. There was a lot of sea fog during the afternoon which gave this bright fogbow at the Great South Wall with the Poolbeg Chimneys. Haven't seen as bright a fogbow since February 2021.

Today was definitely my favourite day of the spell and up there with my favourite October days from 2010 and 2018. Dublin Airport broke its October record for the second day in a row, now with at least 22.0C. 21.2C old record, 21.3C yesterday.

i took this photo today on the hills of Kilkenny. Never saw anything like it, and have since learned that it’s called a sun dog. Impressive anyways, and you learn something new every day,

20c forecast for my bike commute to work in the morning, well into October, that's pretty mad!

A lovely day in south east Laois. Driving the temp was 22.5 - 23c. Saw a few wrapping silage. Beautiful to be out in.

Different season though. Short days. Dew on the grass at 5.30pm. Sun angle max 31° as opposed to 60° in mid summer.

Gorgeous day in West Dublin. Lovely sunshine, warm not hot. Really enjoyable outdoors weather.

Shame about the swarms of mosquitoes again this evening. If we were to experience mild winters in the long run, you would have to be concerned about the threat of mosquito borne diseases emerging here (since the mass death of the f*^#ers during winter is what keeps the total population low enough to prevent a disease reservoir developing). I've seen more mosquitoes over the past fortnight here than on any holiday abroad.

Will miss this little spell, the second weird and wonderful one in 4/5 weeks.

What are the odds November has a 4 or 5 day 16-19c spell..

3 days from 1959 were in the top 12 before this week. What the hell was going on then?

Yep I wouldn’t be surprised to see 16-19c in November and 13-16c in December. Can’t see any meaningful cold this side of Christmas.

Ye same here I was surprised when I didn't see it there 🤔

I've never known the like of it here. I've had to be careful with windows and doors the past while because they seem to fill the house. Spent one evening a few weeks ago killing them in the bedroom and there was no end to them. I live in a wooded area where there's plenty of standing water which they love and I imagine all the rain we had in summer followed by warm autumn just led to perfect conditions for them.

On a related note I see that some grain farmers are abandoning their harvests for the same reason, the wet summer was a disaster for them and now the warm autumn is leading to the grain sprouting before they can get it cut. Disaster for them.

It shortens the winter for sure. Many people have still not put on the heating or lit fires.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

23.2C is crazy for Dublin Airport in October. Sunday already broke its October record set in 1971 by 0.1C with 21.3C but now yesterday Monday has beaten the pre-2023 record by a whole 2 degrees.

That's also warmer than any day it had in July and August this year which both had maxima in the 22s.

Wonderful extended summer lasting from May to mid-October. Each month was sunnier than average during this period (also record sunny January) and there was drought from August to October though November/December were very wet. Sunniest year on record to present day.

Nudging 22c (21.8c) already in Greystones and no sun!

That's both warm and cold records broken at Dublin Airport for Oct in recent yrs. Didn't it have a record cold minimum back in 2018 I think ? Around -2c.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,954 ✭✭✭✭sryanbruen

You would be correct. It achieved -4.7C on 30th October 2018 following a northerly. Probably our last October cold weather though 2019 did have some frosts.

Going by the stats, sunniest, driest, highest temps etc, which comes out on top for overall best summer, 1959, 1976 or 1995?

If anyone has the time and interested, there's some talk on the rugby forum of what the weather and underfoot conditions will be like in Paris for Ireland v NZ on Saturday. It seems a heavy rain belt will cross the country during the day. Some will have access to better charts than me. 8pm GFS.
