Replace Griselinia hedge with...

I've some small (about 1m high and 0.5m wide) Griselinia hedging in my front garden. It's healthy but a bit boring, so thinking about replacing it. Would love a native hedge, but it would need to be constrained to the current size, not sure if this is a runner? Any other ideas?

The alternative is to change it to a narrow border, as functionally it doesn't need to act as a hedge.

Holly might be an option if you want something evergreen and native.

Was thinking that, but would prefer a mixed native hedge. Constraining something like a hawthorn to that size doesn't seem feasible though.

If you can keep Griselinia that small you shouldn't have a problem with hawthorn! Farmland hawthorn hedges in the uk are kept to 3 to 4 ft high, some pretty savage cutting and layering goes into it.
