2024 Irish local elections Galway.

The way things are going we might have a GE before the locals.

This government isn't very stable.

SF saying they want to run two candidates per ward - but not able to actually name a single one as yet. That's not exactly an "announcement".

I wonder if Declan McDonnell and Terry O' Flaherty are going again. They must be both headed towards 80.

I don't think Dec is running again.

They will probably run, and get elected again, but how many of the older generation will see through their term?

It's the main issue caused by not hosting by-elections for councilors.

Any experienced councilor who plans to retire, can run, get elected, and then give up his seat to the party, and a family member, or some unknown can take over the role for the remainder of the term

How often does that actually happen in practice? There have been 5 co-options in the last two Councils and none have involved Councillors who planned to retire and ran with the intention of handing the seat over to a favoured replacement. Three were Councillors who were elected to the Dail or Seanad, one Councillor resigned in disgrace, and one decided the responsibilities of a Councillor weren't compatible with family life. Are there earlier examples where it was understood someone intended to retire and cynically got elected with no intention of fulfilling their full term?

A good one to flag before the 2024 locals but would have me eye on the more ambitious types and party's who are looking to get elected and then navigate up the Political ladder to a TD or Senator.

If? Ya know what ya mean but good chunk who are happy to be just Cllr.

I do wish we had half the no's of Cllrs we have in the Country but make it a full time paid role.

Surprised alright SF not running two in the East. For Central and West I think its probably wise enough considering the no of sitting Cllrs who will be running again.

You should approach the Cllrs in your Ward first to be honest.

I find I get responses from many Cllr's but my query's are always neighbourhood based never personal related stuff.

Why wouldn't you name them, sure what do you care what anyone thinks.
