If Tonga could even get in 14-6 at half time.

If Tonga had some Portuguese flair and Portugal had some Tongan beef they’d be some team. 😁

Maybe mergers would keep the moaners happy 😁

Mapimbi seemed to drive in as much with the head.

    Good call.

    I think that's fair.

Glad we played Tonga second game. This would be an attritional last pool game.

Has to be some responsibility put on the player being tackled too. That is a classic example

They have the know how. Tonga with 10min pressure couldn't score.

    Agree, sensible from Pearce.

Only way the Tongan averts contact there is by looking away in the tackle contact, which could be dangerous for other reasons.

I think Stevie Ferris is mistaken to refer to an effort to "eradicate" head-on-head contact. Without completely changing the nature of the game, they can never be eradicated. What we must strive for, is to depower them, lessen them and make them less injurious.

SA getting all the calls. Last lineout crooked, and there was a high shot on a Tongan player before Pearce blew up for the advantage. Tonga getting nothing.

No point arguing with the eejits on here

It’s madness thinking that expanding the RWC to 24 and having absolute wasted teams like Namibia along to get **** hammerings is going to grow the game.

    it.is.not.going.to.happen

as someone has said look at Italy- loads of 6 nations seasons- still useless

there are huge barriers to growing the game beyond its current core- putting on a near 2 month long “festival” where a whole month largely consists of uncompetitive batterings isn’t winning any converts.

some rugby fans get it- even Gerry thornley has seen the light- but the event junkies just want to believe it’s a real world cup

    Pearce only reffing Tonga

    Go Tonga!

Fourie totally illegal there, glad Tonga got over. If Tonga can get into SA 22, it looks like they have the power to score more.

Deserved try. Why constantly warn the SA hooker for lying over the top of the ruck and slowing the ball? Just go straight to penalty advantage for something so blatant.

Rugby zealots talking about expanding and growing the game. It is not going to happen. The Tier1 nations don't give a hoot about the Tier2, and have essentially pulled the ladder up behind them. A token game against Fiji every 2nd or 3rd year from Ireland is nonsense. Either get these teams playing regularly in the existing tournaments (6N and RC) or forget about it.

It is a real world cup. the hundred or so countries that played part of qualification process show that

Expanding the world cup does help grow the game but it needs to be combined with getting these countries more games and more help outside the world cup.

There is barriers to growing the game but reducing the size of the world cup only adds even more of a barier and doesnt help anyone

Do you lads to start a new thread to discuss the expansion of the RWC? People obviously feel strongly about it, it's taking over this thread.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 9,584 ✭✭✭fitz

SA so cynical and getting away with murder close to their line. I can see them pulling away, but if Tonga get the next score, could get very tense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,118 ✭✭✭FintanMcluskey

Expanding the world cup would only make sense if the group stages are competitive.

Don't feed the troll. Been doing it all day on the Ryder Cup thread too.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,465 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

You clearly didnt read what i posted. an expanded world cup only works if its combined with a lot more games/assistance for countries in the other 40+ weeks in between this world cup ending and the next beginning.

Georgia are consistently the best in europe in the ENC yet dont get enough games against 6 nations sides. Namibia need more games against other top sides. As do the Pacific island sides. etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,282 ✭✭✭TheRona

That first SA try was bollocks. Thought it at the time, but didn't get to see a decent replay. No mark given, tap taken behind the ref's back, and he just let them do it. 9 times out of 10, that's called back.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 9,584 ✭✭✭fitz

Reckon Pearce calls that back if it was Tonga.

How or when are these games going to happen?

Ireland will not tour Georgia in a summer tour.

Have Ireland ever played Georgia in an Autumn International?
