The grant is relatively small. It will be swallowed up by the charge point. Any upgrades required to the fuse board etc will be extra on top that you will have to stump up for, so not much to be gained unless you are factoring in that the grant will disappear in future in which case the potential gain is the €600 the grant gives you today. That’s it.

I see a type 2 charging cable in Lidl next Thurs. Seems good value for a 5M cable..

The only benefit to an EVSE is to facilitate charging of electric vehicles.

Hi all. New Tesla Model Y arrival due very very soon.

I know I should have charging all sorted before buying however she has free charging in work and usually in two days a week although they are back to back. Hoping that leaving thursday to come home she will be fully charged and its 50km back along the M50.

Anyway - my electrical situation involved and early 70's semi-d.

We are still on the prehistoric spinning ESB meter with what looks to me like 10sq cables to the fuse board so they need upgrading.

The fuse box is more or less directly behind and above the meter box on the external wall and I think I'd like the charger on the dividing wall with the neighbor. This would be be beack out, down, accross the side access up the wall and out about a meter. Total run I'd guss is maybe 6m with all the turns etc.

So I need to get the cables from the meter to the fuse box upgraded from 10sq to 16sq -and a new meter installed? What meter should I get? Newest latest smartest or something between the smartest and my current dumbest? BTW we did have an electric shower but that has been replaced with a power shower so while cable and breaker is there its not used. I don't know if it will ever be again but I think I'd like to keep that option available just in case. Kitchen has been upgraded so new electric cookers and an induction hob gone in and new cables run for those to meet latest regs.

Next chargers - no solar at the moment but a definte possiblility down the line but could be a while. Is zappi the best for smart charging / load balancing use etc or is there another option?

Given that this a blank install what would be the best most optimum future proofed instalation I should go for particulalry as I'm coming from basically nothing being goood enough?

    Thanks

Lidl Cable looks fine but Tesla were selling a similar Mennekes branded one for €99 a few months back. Can’t see it on their site now but it was recommended here several times

I got one, I don't think it's 5 meters though, top quality cable in fairness.

Tesla one might only be 4m but I’m not certain. Mennekes would be good quality for sure.

Excellent (picture Mr. Burns here) 😁

Make sure the billing address is yours and not the NI address as the SEAI get a copy of it.

€150 is great value for a 5m 3 phase 22kW Type 2 cable. 3 year guarantee on it also. Great to see a 'mainstream' shop selling EV stuff. The online info on their website about it isn't great in detail but the leaflet has all the details.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Anyone else using an Ohme charger and it’s showing up as offline? I can’t connect to it via the app but the charger is working. I have power cycled it via the cut-off switch but it’s still the same problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,262 ✭✭✭✭ted1

Mines online , with a note that they are adding Solar support

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30 Ten8sixFour

Thanks...I power cycled again and it seemed to go online once I plugged the cable into the car.

Don't have enough experience with the product to know if this is 'usual' behaviour or not. 🤷

I was considering the Zappi but now I am wondering if there is a need for it at the moment. I can set the timers etc on the car so basic load minitoring would be all that I might need and not even sure about that as no electric shower but electrics ovens and an induction hob.

Whats the best value, most discreet thethered option out there that might be worth a look? Ohme Home Pro coming in at €800 as opposed to €1,049 for the Zappi. Both prices include the €600 grant and I also mentioned earth rod needed on the quotes

Hi all new to the form have just bought an EV and am a bit confused around charging point installation.

There is an electric shower in the house

My main problem is my fuse board is in the middle of the house and I was hoping that there was a way of installing the charger beside the meter box and run power from there.

Is this possible? There seems to be a very even split between yay and nay.

I don’t have solar may look at it down the road probably 4 years being realistic

Is there any charger that are more user friendly than others I’d be looking at a tethered version of any charger

Thnaks in advance for any help

I had no problem in getting the installer to put the Zappi under the meter box outside. He did have to make sure that there was room for two circuit breakers in the box with the meter - one for the charger and one for the rest of the house. Meter was subsequently upgraded to Day/Night meter.

Zappi is the way to go if you intend to add solar later.

Thank you and appreciate the picture. May I ask who you got to install it please. Thanks again

NMD (Nigel M Daly) is the more common name of the company.

Just to note, this installation method is no longer allowed.

You can have an external board installed beside the meter cabinet and supply the charge point from there. There are guidelines around when and where this method can be used.

Agreed, and that chargepoint should not be located directly below the meter cabinet. Good to see surge protection fitted though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,460 ✭✭✭Felexicon

Even if they did leave out the main double pole isolation switch to cut power to both the house and charger

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,566 ✭✭✭Risteard81

What altitude are your chargepoint and isolator installed at?

I also notice that the Contractor's Seal has not been fitted at the interface.

I don't need to take my EV charge point from my meter box, it's already installed from my consumer unit.

What way is the proper way to take it from the meter box.

Assume it's something like this with the main over current in the bottom right. (Not mine just pulled from internet, (possibly a isolator in the top right)

    Screenshot_20231005-182024.png

What is the process then, split after the overcurrent(with mcbs? One for house and one for charge point?)

Then the charge point has its own external consumer unit with surge and whatever it needs?

Or just split with Henley blocks after the overcurrent and then into its own external consumer unit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,566 ✭✭✭Risteard81

Strictly no ISCOs in the meter cabinet - only the main overcurrent device. The existing tails would need to be diverted to the new external DB along with the new tails, and circuit protection in the new external DB along with suitable labelling inside. It's extremely messy and awkward. Just don't do it - it almost never makes sense to do it this way.

Isolator is at knee height - or do you mean altitude above sea level?! Where should the contractor seal be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,566 ✭✭✭Risteard81

I meant height (measured). But altitude sounds cooler.

    Seal at the interface.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 339 ✭✭tlaavtech

    Which bit is the Interface?!

Was offered an Autel today "Autel Maxi Charge 7KW EV Charger Tethered 5m Cable" by Smartzone. I only see very few mentions on boards.ie about them, one saying they have bad reviews but reviews I can find online appear in higher number.

I was offered a Wallbox Plus elsewhere for €100 more installed. As I've just finally had some electrical work completed on the house I'm only committing now for the Install as SEAI grant now asked you to enter the exact product you're looking for the grant on.

Any fresh recommendations for an EV install where I don't have and will not in the near future have Solar Panels but will have electric showers.

    Thanks in advance
