whilst they've all announced their unit rate reductions, and that'll probably be all until the new year, we may still see better sign-up discounts. e.g. If BGE can afford to offer existing customers 40% discounts, you'd imagine they could improve on the 15% they're offering to new customers. Coming into the heavy usage months it could well be worth paying the €50 or €100 to break out of your contract for a better rate and discount.

FWIW, with the newly announced rates, Energia are now the cheapest for me (DF, 24h urban meter, 5k units electric, 19k gas) though there's not much in it. I'm currently with SSE but will wait until the new rates are kicking in before deciding if it's worth breaking the contract.

In fairness, the last two provider changes I did were because of this thread, I never found any of those switcher sites to be any use.

That's where I heard of the OBS deal last year, and that the BGE renewal offer had been improved in my account. But before that, Bonkers helped me choose suppliers as well.

Anyway, reflecting on the posts here ... There are many questions around switching that aren't related to current bargains (meter types, activations, etc, and with the rollout of smart meters we could get more and more of these). I think it could help to have a "Switching electric/gas providers" thread for these under Consumer Issues, to keep this one focused on any offers not available through Bonkers.

Still no price cuts from Bord Gais?

I was only really referring to this year. The thread is only useful when there is a deal that doesn't appear on bonkers (Flogas, waterpower, OBS for examples).

The thread is no longer a bargain alert. It should be moved to somewhere else.

15.5% reduction on standard unit price & standing charge wef 9 Nov.

A way off one of the other providers. Didn't one offer a 30% cut?

the percentage being reduced and the percentage being offered as a discount doesn't really matter, the important thing is the end price per household

I'm hearing reports that shell recharge have reduced the rate you pay on ESB ecars car chargers. Doesn't apply to everybody but they are technically a provider of electricity

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,906 ✭✭✭Gooser14

Stating the reduction as a percentages is meaningless. The only figures that matter is the actual unit price & standing charge. At the end of the day, your bill total divided by total units used is your true inclusive unit price.

My WP statement for Aug shows the following ex VAT unit prices:

    Day 26.581c

    Night 19.03c

    S/C 80c per day

It also shows a PSO Levy credit of €12.73. I still haven't received the credits for June & July.

if you still have credit on your electricity account and you change I presume it moves with you?

Apply for a refund and they'll issue you a cheque or send it to your bank account. They don't transfer between companies

Waterpower now asking potential customers to leave it until around October 31st to check for an update. They keep pushing that date back !

Sad thing is , if you go back a month or two here , you'll be able to read posts from people who were surprised/shocked that anyone would sign up for waterpower's tracker offering

The FloGas deal was available at the time which gave you a guaranteed cheap rate compared to the market. Waterpower may not be cheaper over the winter compared to FloGas and the savings atm are minimal. 29.99 is still very competitive for the FloGas deal and better then most in the market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭tx_tx

And adamant that prices were not going to come down anytime soon to a level comparable to the Flogas fixed rate (making this offer certainly not bad, but not any better than the competition, taking into account likely future price drops). Not great advice, tainted by what people feel about companies / regulators / government more than down-to-earth analysis and comparison of the offers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,186 ✭✭✭bren2001

Happy to admit you were correct on that. I thought they would delay the rates coming down further.

Saying that, the FloGas deal still is the second best on the market after the BGE renewal rate. You cannot switch companies to a rate equal too or lower then the FloGas deal at the time. It still was a great decision for many people.

I prefer the security of a known rate over the winter compared to the WaterPower variable model which may or may not work out over the winter.

Why is it sad, the offer suited some people and didn’t suit others it’s not really a surprise some people want different things like other people wouldn’t touch the fixed rate on flo gas in case the rates went through the floor

    The internet isn’t for everyone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭tx_tx

I think what is sad isn't that some people saw the Flogas offer as good for them, it's that the advice they gave to others was that it was the only offer worth considering, both at that point in time and for the 12 months to come. WP was not even described as inferior / 2nd best (from their perspective), it was dismissed altogether, not even mentioned as an alternative in the vast majority (but not all) of advice given. It felt a bit like a cult at times TBH.

The BGE policy of offering existing customers a better rate than new customers is certainly a new departure it will be interesting to see if other suppliers follow suit.

I think people are slightly wary of small or little known operators having seen the likes of Panda, Ibeddrola leave the market in the last 18 months. Maybe there would be more of an uptake on tracker rates if they were offered by one of the bigger players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 610 ✭✭✭1373

I probably worded it poorly. What makes me happy with waterpower other than the price was the ease of dealing with them . What they offered me is what it got and the changeover was perfect. The price uncertainty is obviously a risk. But when I read here of people with the same supplier getting completely different offering at the same time, I'm glad not to be in the hunt

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭tx_tx

Time will tell, but its description as 2nd best or a great decision still puts aside its fixed rate aspect. Yes this fixed rate was great in July and August. Yes it's still 2nd best in September (but better by a smaller margin when compared to the others). But we're comparing a 12 month period, and later in the year it may be slightly more expensive. Maybe not by a margin that will decide people to pay an exit fee, and certainly not a bad deal overall on 12 months, but just I think at the end of these 12 months, it won't look like a great decision, not a bad decision either, just an average decision that didn't deserve the attention and cult it received on this thread (not from you, though, but some other posters were not giving balanced advice at all).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,827 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Well, I had no problems when I left BG for the Flogas fixed 24hr rate, made a big difference to my bills and gives me certainty for the coming months. I'll see what's around next April when my contract is up, maybe there'll have been another round of price cuts, not holding my breath though 😕

I thought that as well. I changed over to WP in June and was/am happy with the service and the price. At the time I was questioning myself, but I am glad I went on my own research. As you said, they were dismissed by people at the time on this thread. I'm glad of the savings and I hope others get a good deal somewhere soon. It's not easy trying to live financially in this world at times.
