Memory upgrade

Hi, I have desktop PC (i5-9400F ) which is mostly okay for my needs except for lack of memory, 8GB. I want to run Android studio which is memory hungry, requiring 16GB minimum.

Computer is an HP Pavilion Desktop 590 and is about 5 years old. Originally Windows 10 but now upgraded to Win 11.

It has UDIMM x2 slots

According to HP system infomration and hardware check:- currently have 8192 MB DDR4 / 26666 MHz / single channel synchronous in Bank 0 .

I am not too sure what I should be looking for in memory. I notice some vendors have only DDR5. Is that backward compatible?

Can I add another 8 GB , or do I need to replace the 8 GB module with a 16GB module

If any one can point in the right direction, or suggest what I should be looking for, I would be grateful.

DDR5 is not compatible. Don't touch any of that. There's still plenty of DDR4 available.

Adding a second 8GB DIMM would also give the benefits of having two memory channels running and increased bandwidth.

From what you are saying, it has two slots and only one is used. In which case your can add a second DIMM.

As a first step, I would open the PC, check there is only 1 module and get the make and model off it. Then see if you can easily get an exact match off ebay/adverts etc.

Otherwise look for another DDR4 module with the same specs.

or go to crucial.com download and run their system scanner to identify compatible memory and the maximum your system supports.

It may support up to 32GB if you want more than the minimum recommended for Android Studio.

Your motherboard/CPU supports up-to 32Gb DDR4 2666 MHz, but you can buy faster DIMMs (they will downclock to 2666).

1x 8Gb runs around 20eur new (used: 12eur in CEX)
2x 16Gb runs around 60eur new

I clicked on the memory up link and I got the following specification of my PC

System Specifications:Memory Type: DDR4 NON-ECC
Memory Speed: 2400 - 2666 MT/s
Chipset: NA
Memory Slot: 2
Memory Min Size: 8GB
Max Size Memory Per Slot: 16GB
Maximum Memory For System: 32GB
Install Memory in Pairs: No

They say

Install Memory in Pairs: No

So, assuming I have already 8GB in one slot, could I add their suggested 16GB module to the other slot. for a total of 24GB? Their price is $40 for the 16GB module (link Memory-Up - Black Diamond Memory)

You can add a 16 GB module but it's not recommended because unpaired modules won't run in dual-channel.

Also, that's a US site. You'd get stung on import taxes if you bought from there.

Thanks K.O.Kiki. That answers an important question. I opened the case and confirmed there is only one module in place.

All the sites i have found from checking seem to bring me to American outlets ( . Could you recommend any European site? thanks.

Does it need to be the same manufacturer to run in dual channel? Mine seems to be SK Hynix ( I think)

Thanks K.O, I have just ordered the 2x 16GB. That should satisfy my needs for now

Does to give feedback. I received the 2 x 16GB memory modules. Removed the 8 GB module and fitted them and all now working again.

Does the memory uplink you clicked on previously now report " Install Memory in Pairs: Yes" ? If it still says no, in some PC's BIOS you might have to enable dual channel.
