And to add to that actually check the time on your meter. Plenty of them are out, only 15 minutes in my case, but I have heard of some being out by a lot more.

Are people complaining they can't get it replaced for a smart meter or a d/n capable smart meter? They have only just started rolling those out apparently

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,113 ✭✭✭✭unkel

ESBn hasn't even started to roll out smart meter replacements for D/N meters. Could be a year before you get one. The previous poster is probably referring to a lot of us on the renewable energy forum, where we have forced our current providers to replace our D/N meters with existing smart meters, so we could go on a smart meter plan. This is very profitable for people with one (or more) EVs and big battery storage. Basically the electricity rate is 5c / kWh incl VAT. But only between 02:00 and 05:00, but this is all we buy. And we get handsomely paid for exporting to the grid too!

Which of the smart plans are 5c between 2-5 please? I have 12c 2-4 with Electric Ireland.

Posted it many times all over boards. You also get a €100 welcome bonus. Possibly about the cheapest electricity you can get in the EU at the moment.

What’s the consensus on these new smart day night meters - got the letter saying today saying I have to notify them if I want to keep the old one.

    Hold or Fold ?

Have solar but don’t export. Currently get €260 per year in estimated FIT. Will loose fit if I don’t get a smart D/N meter but export bugger all anyway.

9000 night rate units 2000 day PA

    On flo gas community plan.

There's a good discussion of it here

    https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058311315/is-there-any-reason-left-not-to-go-smart-meter

IMO you might as well get the meter, you can continue on the D/N tariffs until there's a smart plan that suits you, there doesn't seem to be any disadvantages

At least you'll get a small amount for what you export instead of nothing

Its all a bit academic now anyway, everyone's getting a meter and it looks like roll out is speeding up. The only argument left is really whether they are installing something with some flexibility or which unfairly constrains our options.

What sort of meter are they asking people if they want to hold it? There will be no FIT for those holding, and eventually they will just increase prices on old meters as competition increases on smart meters. I got a letter today advising swap was in autumn.

    😎

If you refuse the swap then you keep the current meter, but lose any microgeneration payments if you have solar

I wonder what happens if you refuse a smart meter and your meter fails down the line. There's no stock of the digital meters left so presumably you'll be told they can only replace it with a smart meter or you get to live without electricity

Did the letter actually state you could refuse though? mine did not.

Got my letter today, advising swapping of D/N to a "smart meter configured in D/N mode". Deemed Export would cease if I refused a smart meter.

The final line reads "if you wish to retain your current D/N meter contact us in <email> or call on <number>"

I'm happy to have avoided being put onto a regular smart meter so I won't fight this one (it's a shame to leave my D/N meter as it's configured 55 minutes essentially in my favour, my "night" rate ends at 08.55 instead of 08:00 each morning, I use more energy in the morning rush than what I lose between 11pm and Midnight).

Go for the DN smart meter, maybe you'll let the export happen a bit more, export at 24c and buy at night at 14.75,

Every 2 units you export buys you 3 night units.

Has anyone gotten much by the way of deemed export payouts from Flogas? I've had solar since October, and so far i've gotten 2 payouts (bord gais payout in March, and Energia payout in June after I left them) to the tune of €50. My deemed export should work out at 1130kWh, but from the bills i've gotten i've only been credited 277kWh. Even that 277kWh from October to June seems like Energia didn't pay out enough to me.

    Flogas site says:

Excess exported electricity will be applied to your account as credit on the same frequency as your existing billing arrangements using the metered or deemed calculation provided by ESBN that is applicable to your account.

But i've never seen any export credit from them on my bill

With these new day night smart meters are they honouring the old day night rates or do you have to move to the more expensive smart rates?

Pretty sure the only point in them is that they can support day/night.

@the_amazing_raisin Are you on flogas now? didnt you say you got the FIT separately? or on a separate Bill/invoice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,720 ✭✭✭yllw.ldbttr

    Their system is apalling.

You need to call them up and ask for your separate credit detailing a one line FIT payment which will make no sense, won't have relevant dates nor align with your billing period nor will it answer your questions.

I lodged a formal complaint and they gave me an extra 60 euro credit though as an apology... LMAO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,334 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Yeah they email you a separate bill, but so far I've had to email them every month to get it

They do seem to apply the credit automatically, but it's getting the bill which is a hassle

Same got the letter yesterday, Ive 20 panels and 10kwh battery solar system going in next month. Im on the good Flogas Day/night rate. Run a heat pump during the winter on night rate and anything else I can. Also charge an EV (Do 70% of my charging at work so not the biggest consideration)

Wife and kids in house all day so using plenty of day rate at the moment too.

Im thinking of blocking the smart meter, I haven't seen any good rates. And just forego microgen for at least this winter and rethink in spring.

    Thoughts?

Ah, so you're saying my bill includes the export credit, but it's just not itemised? But my bill list my units used, and the cost per unit, and everything on that itemised bill adds up to the balance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭celtic_oz

Got a letter saying smart meter on the way and need to call them if want to keep old day/night

Will lose deemed FIT if I refuse smart meter

Assume I can keep old power plan ( flogas ) on the new smart meter and as long as I dont CHOOSE smart plans I can keep doing so indefinetly ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,334 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

The balance on the portal should include it, but it won't be on your bill

You get a seperate bill via email which shows the export units, it's very weird and I assume they're doing the export manually

Best to email them to make sure they're applying the export credit properly. To be fair the customer service is generally pretty helpful, I think they're making up for archaic systems

Got it sorted. So I got 1 email from them in June saying €26 credit for export. But after a chat with CS, their invoices say I got €72 credit, and 3 days later (probably after a meter reading) an additional €2. No idea where that €26 went, but I assume it was nulled after I submitted a meter reading. No export payout since early July, so i'm expecting a decent one in my next bill due soon.

So far i've exported 581kWh, but been paid for 643kWh via deemed export. Not much in it, but the night rate is still probably worth it vs crazy day rates on smart meters.

Who cares? I can't see anyone else offering 5c electricity in that window

I am currently with Energia on a D/N plan, and looking to move to a standard smart meter and Smart EV plan as I have solar/battery, similar to what @unkel has done with Pinergy.

Energia are telling me that if I move to a smart meter, they have to wait for 30 days to allow ESB to verify connectivity before they can move me onto the EV plan, and for that 30 days I will go back to a standard tariff. There would also be a Euro200 charge if the smart meter does not connect to put me back on a D/N meter.

    Anyone else experienced this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,348 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Seems to be standard practice, except for the sneaky 200 charge which I don't think they're allowed to charge as it wouldn't be your fault the meter can't connect to the network. I was contradicted here but when I got my smart meter installed the installer asked me was the VF mobile signal good in the house, if it was there shouldn't be any problems, which there weren't I can access the meter data through the esbn site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,624 ✭✭✭batistuta9

Could you not try to get the smart DN meter from esbn, stay on your DN plan while the meter established connection, then move to whatever smart plan you want.

Thanks for the tip. Will as ESB Networks is a new smart D/N meter can also be used as 24hr smart meter.
