That's interesting. Any idea why? I've never understood the hate he gets.

What ever happened to Emmet Malone? He used to be a fairly regulator contributor at one stage especially around Ireland games

Very surprised they had Souness on as there seemed to be a bit of an edge any time he was on previously.

No longer covers football or even any sport I believe.

Pity he didn't turn up for international duty, seems to have made a very swift recovery from his so called injury

Enjoyed the podcast about Sinn Fein. Sounds like an excellent book.

With regards to the live show I hope Kimmage talked about the chronic issue of drug cheats in rugby considering the world cup is on at the moment.

From the post-match press conference... check out Simon's question at the 12 minute mark and Andy Farrell's response 😬

I'm not sure what kind of answer Simon was hoping for...

Was he the one reporting on the Mack Hansen thing during the week? It was fairly embarrassing whoever it was.

The irish media completely made it up with their own hysteria. They're all trying to read into every tone and gap in a sentence just to get the next world cup drama.

Ken's style when he reports on soccer is as an opinion writer to literally wonder what people are thinking and guess at those thoughts. But crucially everyone is aware of that and no one would ever re report what he has made up.

Maybe its a saipan hangover but through chats and texts the media did their best at creating a problem in the irish camp.

The media in every country have a role in a nations world cup and need to have the collective cop on to not lose their heads.

Because of the gaps between games, website have clicks to generate and word counts to fill.

Heard a good few folks in pub after the liveshow a bit underwhelmed with it. I think they were expecting bigger mystery guests than Paul Kimmage, Souness & the dulcet tones of George Hamilton. Unless they pulled Roy Keane out of a hat, I don't think you'd have pleased that sort really. I enjoyed it myself, Kimmage really was excellent, worth going just seeing him even. Sadlier, O'Carroll, Simon, and DOD's (minor) part were all grand too. Though thought it was weird that Ken disappeared off stage for large parts of the proceedings.

Kimmage sounded like he was going to have an aneurism during the clip they played.

Tour de France or cycling I’d imagine.

PK’s anger is, a large part, performative.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Sounded very rude to me. No need for him to be having a go like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,803 ✭✭✭✭siblers

He has his grievances with Rugby too

I'm guessing they released the two podcasts yesterday before Diane Caldwell's comments on Pauw

possibly so but seemed very strong words for the rugby World Cup. But I guess I’d believe he’d go that OTT

Shane Horgan getting very giddy already...

In my opinion, Kimmage is the best sports journalist in the country. He'd fall out with his own shadow tho.

He's really good in the sense that he nearly always finds something that organisations generally want hidden or covered up. But he's an extremely abrasive character who falls out with everyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 832 ✭✭✭cheese sandwich

He seems devoid of empathy to me, in that he appears incapable of seeing things from the point of view of other people. He’s 100% right and everyone else is wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,495 ✭✭✭bren2001

I wouldn't dispute that but when it comes to doping, I am yet to read a credible article against anything he says. I think he is 100% right. Empathy doesn't come into it. Rough Ride the book and the short documentary are both excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 832 ✭✭✭cheese sandwich

He might be right. I certainly suspect that there’s a lot more doping in rugby than is officially acknowledged. On the other hand, I’ve never seen him acknowledge the attempts made by cycling to improve things since the Lance years.

To be honest though I find his obsession with doping wearying. There’s no point in following sport if you’re only going to focus on the negative aspects. I read Rough Ride which is a great book but he’s become so much more dogmatic since then.

And my comment about the lack of empathy was motivated by his falling out with David Walsh, with whom he had been best friends for 20 years but was apparently angry that Walsh didn’t support him enough when he was **** canned by the Sunday Times. What did he expect Walsh to do, resign in sympathy with him?

I can't recall Kimmage ever being positive about anything organised sports related. I like listening to him, he's done a lot of important work but I'd like to hear if he has a different side.

Does he wake up get annoyed at his cornflakes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭jones

Talking about Kimmage reminds me of the scene from in Bruges. Kimmage is basically a **** but he's good at what he does although he constantly seems to be excessively angry over everything. It can't all be real at least part of it must be performative.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,495 ✭✭✭bren2001

Doping is still rife in cycling I would have said. They never cleaned it up. He isn't a journalist for enjoyment, it's his job and he's excellent at it. It is incredibly tiring listening to him. It is all negative. It is what he is best at. He can be depressing and difficult to listen too but also be an excellent journalist.

His chip on his shoulder about cycling is understandable. He doped and then wrote a book about it and was excommunicated.

He is positive about golf and writes lots of positive things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 832 ✭✭✭cheese sandwich

Even with all the doping that is still in cycling, I would have more time for cyclists than for elite golfers. I don’t know why he regards them so highly. And I would suspect that it is another sport that is not squeaky clean when it comes to PEDs.

Anyway I don’t disagree with your general point. I think at his best Kimmage is a brilliant journalist but I think he damages himself with his negativity and anger

What happened to the egomaniacs segment? I thought it was meant to happen last week?

Apparently Murph got his legal team involved and an injunction was issued.

Presume with the upcoming book launch he didn't want the negative publicity.
