Hold the horses...! There's been much argument on this thread about the myth of Bord Gais offers getting better the nearer it is to people's contract end dates! As opposed to the offers just all coincidentally getting improved at the same time around a week ago. So, the big question for you is this: Did you check the renewal offer via your online account in the last week or two? If not, then the offer you got over the phone was probably the same as that already being offered online, but you just hadn't seen it. You should probably have received an email in recent times referencing the online offer. All these online offers were improved to the 33% and ~40% rates a week or so ago, REGARDLESS of the exact contract end dates.

It looks like they do not appear on Bonkers, as they have no selection parameter, for entering the % of usage at those low night boost rates, and the hours, also varies by supplier:

EI, is 2 hours, 2 am to 4am

BG, Pinergy, SSE is 3 hours, 2am to 5am

Energia is 4 hours, 2 am to 6am

Flogas, Yuno Energy, and the others don’t seem to have one.

Its different with d/n rates, as you enter a % of total usage at the night rate, meaning an accurate calculation is possible.

I got the email/call around 11th August with the 15% offer and I checked it online at that point. I got no other comms from them since then until the call yesterday. I guess it's possible they did update the offer online but if they did then they didn't email me to say they did.

My contract is up on 5 October. I received 3 emails from BGE:

    • 21/08 - Your electricity contract is due to expire
    • 26/08 - Your price plan is ending
    • 31/08 - Your contract with us ends soon

The first email was 45 days before end of contract, which is when they start contacting customers for renewal. Initially the offer was 15%.

This last email was about the same day when it was first reported here that the discounts were improved to match last year's for electricity only (33% for me) or beat last year's by 5% for dual fuel customers. Its timing may be a coincidence or not - maybe that's just the email they send 35 days before, or the day before the last full month starts. I don't know but I tend to think it was a coincidence, as it's a very generic email with no mention of an improved renewal offer.

I received no other email until I renewed on 9 September.

Hi all, my energia contract is coming to and end soon. Just looked at my bills and shocked to discover that we've been charged 48c a unit for the best of a year.

We had signed up to their EV tariff which was advertised as having a fixed cost of 33c day rate and 9c night rate. I know many other people on here signed up to the same plan - it was a good deal at the time. My understanding of "fixed" was that the advertised rates would not change over the lifetime of the contract. Apart from our very first bill however, this has not been the case.

Has anyone else experienced this? Have I somehow gotten the wrong end of the stick or have they pulled a fast one here?

Looks like they've messed up your bills. I'd give them a ring, in their defence I always found them very good to deal with, maybe they'll give you another fixed price deal as compensation.

    Hi,

I signed up for the same rate. However my first bill was .48 and .14

Contacted them and was informed that the "Fixed" only applied to the discount.

(They very sneakly changed the wording of the contract)

However I remained on these charges, no further increase.

Last week changed to their EV contract. Did not have a smart meter so they got one installed (In two days)

Only problem, I am now on 24 hour meter at 0.41 for next 4 weeks. And I have lost a week of the .14 night rate.

    When you say:

"However I remained on these charges, no further increase."

Do you mean you remained on the .48/.14 rate?

(That's exactly the rate I've been on as well)

    Hi,

    Yes remained on that rate.

Don't care what anyone says, that's either deliberately misleading information or some seriously shady practices by the company after the fact.

Either way, by my calculation, that's 1200 EUR so far out of my pocket I didn't expect to pay.

Is there a regulatory body that hears complaints about these energy providers?

Most tariffs are fixed discount with a variable rate. Energia did have a fixed rate discount last year for EV's. You need to read your contract to see what you signed up for and follow the complaints procedure in Energia before contacting the CRU.

Prepay Power get in on the act.

PrepayPower to cut gas and electricity prices (rte.ie)

As for those laggards in BGE. They better shape up or I'll be shipping out even at a 33% discount.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 838 ✭✭✭mydiscworld

    Their announcement is here

And rates here (still the old ones), new rates start Nov 1st

Even with those cuts I still make them uncompetitive due to their prepayment service charges on top of standing charges

Logged into Bord Gais and was presented with a dual fuel renewal offer of 38% discount on gas and electricity standard rates. That's pretty good especially if the standard rates continue to move down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,213 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Surely you've lost your 14c night rate forever now that you have a smart meter or did you get the new smart day night meter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 838 ✭✭✭mydiscworld

I had signed up for Flogas renewal Sept 1st and just did the change of mind on the 14 days cool off.

Looking like SSE Airtricity 10% and 300 cashback best for me as low usage.

Will wait a week or two to see if BGE or indeed Flogas announce any drops to follow the rest who already dropped.

    Hi https://www.boards.ie/profile/mydiscworld,

After the 4 week period I go on the EV contract rate. This will give me 4 hours at .08 a KW from Oct..

With this can charge my 12 KW battery and if needed up to 30 KW into my EV. (Did not know about Fair Usage but I doubt will use the full 30KW each night, so no big deal.)

If you've cancelled a switch, you've to wait 4 (I think) weeks before trying to switch again.

I wouldn't fancy working in Waterpowers call centre when they do reopen to new business. Looks like unless you're a BGE renewal being offered 38% off, your best bet is to wait until they do if you can.

It's as good as it gets at the moment, hope you took it before it disappears.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

Anybody got the Waterpower D/N unit rates for August?

    Hi Guys,

I am currently on .29 cent Electric and .09 cent unit gas with Board Gais for last 12 months - Out of contract 30th Sept - They are offering me the same unit price again (38% discount) . Is this the best at present , cannot see anything better on switcher etc ?

Also will wholesale electricity prices not pass down to the customers at any point soon ?

Finally - I think I have smart meters for both electricity and gas - I'm unsure if I am getting a night-rate on my electricity, I cannot see on the bill ? Is this available ?

    Thanks

There's no such thing as a gas smart meter yet so you don't have one of those. What's the MCC code at the top right of your electric bill?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 JackZapper

Thanks LahinchDog - My MCC code is MCC01

    Then you're on a 24 hour tarrif, no day/night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,213 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

With the 30% offered what rate are you going to get? Yes the 30% discount is what you'll get for the next 12 months and if the unit rate drops so will your unit price.

Flogas reducing rates from November as well.

Fixed rate should drop to 26.59c.It doesnt say what standing charge would be.We have to wait for Flogas to update website.

Will see what BG will say in few days.

Just saw that on the Indo. But the fixed rate wont be reduced on November 1st, only the variable rates.

For those on the BWG plan it might still be worth getting out of it for €50. Average use is 4200kwh per year so 10 months of that is 3,500kwh. At 3.3 cents a kwh less that would be €115 saved over the year so €65 after paying the €50 exit fee with higher savings again for above average users.

Its not being reduced for another 6 weeks anyway so I suppose we can just sit back and wait to see if anything even better comes along.
