Pretty sure it was Wednesday, didn't listen to them in order.

Its hard to see someone do better then 5 wins in 26 games? Alright..... I think I'll set my expectations a little higher then that personally.

FAI have f*ck all money though, it's like some lads think Guardiola will do the job for pennys we ask him nicely enough.

This argument of letting Kenny see out the campaign for dignity is a load of ****. What happens if we lose at home to Greece.? There's no dignity in that

Delaney spoke superbly as to why he should go

His point was that O'Neill didn't advocate for Ireland. He didn't go on a push to promote the benefits of playing for Ireland. He didn't set the public tone that Ireland was a positive place to be.

It was a snapshot into his whole attitude towards the job at the time. Every game was to be suffered through, there was no point thinking tactically about a game etc.

Even when he went to set the record straight recently he took the stance that there was little point to making an effort. He could have lied and said he did everything he could to keep Rice in the background. No one is ever going to dispute it. Rice will probably never talk about Ireland again. O'Neill couldn't even pretend he cared now.

Damien Delaney was excellent today on the pod. I actually thought he really showed up Richie, in terms of Richie's "well what would you do?" approach to the discussion.

Seemed to be a little bit of niggle between Ken and Damien on the pod today. Men ; at it.

Ken's comment about Obama was particularly mealy mouthed.

Yeah, that was a bit weird from Ken. Always thought Delaney and Kerr were a bit too harsh on Kenny, but he spoke brilliantly today.

The idea at senior international level that both parties would be keen to see out a contract because one side seems like a nice bloke, who can be tactically naive or worse oblivious to an opponent's tactical changes just so he doesn't have to get the dreaded call that he's sacked is lunacy. He won't go if there's any money he would walk away from if he walked himself and that's fair enough. I don't understand the logic that at the level he's managing at that he would want to stay in the job because he's a great lad and people feel sorry for him, that's mad stuff too Bill. Kenny always whole heartedly defends himself, he knows the business, from the post match interview last night where he had zero answers he knows at all levels the game is up - you don't need to be a mind reader to have seen that. For some on the pod today to think it's the right thing to keep him in the position because he's an Irish "football man" in his dream job is beyond me.

And another thing that made no sense - we should keep him on because there's an off-chance we could get a play-off.. Surely the exact opposite would be the case?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,495 ✭✭✭bren2001

The logic would be that he qualified us for the play-off and hence deserves the opportunity to see it out.

We're so unlikely to get a play off, it shouldn't factor in.

How is that par? Miles behind the top 2 again? When has that ever happened in the past 40 years and the manager survived?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,495 ✭✭✭bren2001

Losing home and away to France and Holland is expected. Taking 3 points from Greece is probably about right (or 2 points). We are performing about as well as expected in the group. The issue isn't necessarily points, its the nature of the losses. Poyet and Koeman won both games for their teams and Kenny never reacted. Thats the issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,635 ✭✭✭Musicrules

Even average results in the last Nations League would have guaranteed us a playoff. That we're so far down the rankings that we have to hope for a playoff is indicative of how bad Kenny's reign has been.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,635 ✭✭✭Musicrules

No it's not! When have we lost home and away to the top seeds in qualification groups in the last 40 years? When we have the manager has been rightly heavily criticised and sacked. When has failure become so easily accepted. Prior to Kenny, McCarthy was lambasted and he had 2 excellent teams in his group. He only lost 1 of the 4 games against the top seeds.

Now we're supposed to accept trying to scrape third against Greece and Luxembourg is what we should expect. Under any other manager, the aim in this group would have been to knick a draw against France at home, beat Holland at home, get 4 points from Greece and then see where that leaves us going into the last game. And that's not unrealistic. For some reason, abject failure has become acceptable under Kenny.

I guess he’s just a realist who saw the writing on the wall when Rice stepped away to “consider his international future”. Expecting an English man to play for Ireland when they have the option of playing for England who are contending for international tournaments was just a folly.

when he played for Ireland they buttered him up and talked like England wasn’t an option he would consider (https://youtu.be/eqViL74QCPc?si=AO7z-9A-cgLNyCp7)

once he stepped away and continued his strong form for west ham, I’m a passionate Irish fan but forget about it.

overall I just don’t really put much store in Ken’s views on the Irish team. To be still going on about Martin Oneill and Rice and Grealish in 2023 is just laughable. It’s a wonder he didn’t throw in a reference to the Denmark 5-1 while he was at it

Is it just me or is half the second captains output now half filled by pithy little montages, most of which are repeats? Also finding most of the interactions between the hosts to be stale and laboured with the old dynamic that made their name largely gone.

The quality of the regular guests are still top notch but the actual time per week spent on actual sports discussion to be limited. Only noticing really now as there were always a couple of OTB broadcasts in any given week that would fill out my playlist. Now that they are gone behind the paywall I notice the gap. Almost considering subscribing to OTB instead as while the quality is mixed, through sheer volume there is always just about enough quality listening in any given week

We are miles behind France & Holland on players.

    We're about level with Greece.

I think they agreed on everything tbh, any support ken had left was really him just playing devils advocate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,635 ✭✭✭Musicrules

We were miles behind Switzerland and Denmark on players, we were miles behind World Cup champions Germany on players when we beat them, we've been behind on standards of players for a long time but we have usually punched above our weight, Kenny has us punching far below it. The squad he has actually isn't as bad as some people want to paint, most of the countries we've played under Kenny would love to have a squad at our level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,225 ✭✭✭healy1835

You asked the question. Apologies if the reply was a bit glib.

I couldn't disagree more with the take that with the OTB podcasts disappearing behind a paywall, this has somehow magnified the 'stale and laboured' interactions between the lads. The output of the SC & OTB couldn't be further in quality than each other. You acknowedge that the quality is mixed, but you have to wade through some volume of sh1t to find any little diamonds on that feed.

That the quality of the SC product is still so high all these years on is a testament to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,495 ✭✭✭bren2001

Well we lost 6-1 at home to Germany under Trap and then lost 3-0 away from home under King. Don't let facts get in the way tho.

Comparing a team of Keane, Duff, and Given to Bazunu, Knight, and Idah is a good idea. Kenny has been shite but I'll be reasonable with my criticism. Nobody would have us aiming to beat Holland. You'd be praying for two draws.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,635 ✭✭✭Musicrules

You just backed up my post. As I said whenever we've lost to the top seeds home and away, the manager has been criticized and sacked! It actually rarely happens that we lose to the top seeds (meaning the seeds above us). Facts getting in the way of your argument unfortunately.

Who was comparing those players? More strawmaning. The actual comparison was between McCarthy and Kenny because they basically had the same squad except Kenny had a whole host of young talent coming through. McCarthy's record: played 10, won 5, drew 4, lost 1. Kenny's record: played 36, won 10, drew 11, lost 15. That speaks for itself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,495 ✭✭✭bren2001

Trap only lost at home actually.

You're comparing those players by stating the past 40 years. We had better players for the past 40 years. I've zero expectations playing France or Holland. You said our aim should be to beat Holland, thats absolutely ridiculous. 9 points from the group is about par. You said we should do better. Our ranking would say we shouldn't.

Kennys been shite. Should be fired. Mick was shite too. If you think Mick and Kenny had the same squad, you have not watched the past few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,635 ✭✭✭Musicrules

    Yes and was sacked!

We've had better players in the past but that's counteracted by it being far easier to qualify for major tournaments now. Why couldn't we beat Holland? At least drawn, as we've been saying, it's very rare that we lose to the top 2 seeds in a group home and away. It doesn't happen. 9 points is not par, nowhere close. It hasn't been acceptable in the past and it shouldn't be now.

Kenny has had a better squad than Mick but many of the same players. Remember, McCarthy came close to qualifying with a midfield of Hendrick, Whelan and Hourihane, 3 of our most heavily criticised players.

People get very defensive on here, particularly towards Ken.
