Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I am looking for alternative hiking trails to climb Croagh Patrick.

Has anybody ever atempted to climb this mountain from the back side? Like starting at the Mayo Mountain Rescue station? There is a car park to use?

Are there any other possibilities, like climbing the Croagh Patrick from the west? There seems to be a trail, but I don't know where it starts?

You could try starting at the top and working your way down.

Hi! There is supposedly a trail which originates to the West of CP and traverses Ben Goram and the joins the trail from Lecanvey to the summit. The start point appears to be 53.76420, -9.709598 or there abouts.

As for trails from the South side, I have seen the trails alright and they appear short enough from the road below, but are steep in sections. But there are trails there nevertheless. Maybe a local on here would have more info, or post in the Mayo forum.

Thanks for that one. Yes, the one alternative seems to be via Ben Goram. How is the ascend like from Lecanvey? Did anybody ever do this one?

The route from the back where the Mayo Mountain Rescue is located is probably the fastest or the easiest?

I've been up on Groagh Patrick once, the route everyone seems to take, but I found that one rather difficult.

It's grand, people do it. But honestly, if you had difficulty going up the route facing the sea, I'd stick to that route. If you have difficulties going up the back, there's feck all people passing you.

You're probably right about that one. Nobody would see or find me. However they Mayo Mountain rescue is probably on the South side of the mountain for a reason, - quicker access if need be.

It also provides uncluttered access to the mountain. On big days they have staff at the front and back and the aircorp helicopter is parked down near the sea.

I know this because my family are heavily involved in this. We're not from there but my whole family moved down there about 15 years ago. My Mum lives near the Leacanvey approach. It's walkable from our house. And both my sister and brother in law are very involved with mountain rescue. There have been many xmas dinners where they've been called out to go after some idiot who decided to do it at 3pm and got stuck when it started getting dark.

My mum in her 70's did both sides. I've never actually bothered to climb it. So all I know is what I've picked up from chatter :)

I'd definitely recommend going round the back and parking and having a walk. The views back there are lovely. And then take the drive across to Killary for the views.

I must invest myself in doing this walk again in 2024. I did the main trail in Aug 2021, walk was fine but the horse-flies were excessive.

Yes. It's not a difficult climb. Even easier now with the purpose built trail at the last bit of it. Fitness wise, active kids of that age will manage it.

That said. Dress appropriately. You don't necessarily need hiking boots and goretex jackets. But don't go up it in sandals and a t-shirt. Weather can change suddenly up there.

Up in 2hrs and down in 1hr would be an average enough. Depending on how energetic everyone is feeling. You'll probably only hang around for 15 mins or so on the top as it can get a bit busy and consequently there isn't much of serene vibe. Great views (weather permitting) and some nice photo ops.

Go as early as possible too.

7 solid hours in total if you have kids like mine who can't stop chatting and looking for food. 🙄🤣

I personally found it difficult and not to be done without hiking boots. I would even recommend army boots. But I guess that depends on personal physical fitness.

That's the general advice, if you want to go up onto a mountian go as early as possible.
