Were people's homes destroyed by the Howth Head fire? By the way, the coverage of the fire in Canada must be understood in the context of the recent horror in Hawaii.

Strongly thinking of withholding my €160 until she does appear at the PAC,, Or until she gives that €16k back that she wasted on a new desk for her office..

    Either one would do ..

Your forgetting the €50k moving fees... and while I have little proof ...

Dee seem at that point in her life to be between Cork and London, meaning she already had a place in Ireland, along with the place in London, which she either sold or she is currently renting. So she could well afford a place in Dublin.

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Looks like its game over for the TV licence evaders.

Irish Times has a story, Revenue will be collecting the charge directly from every household.

I got rid of my TV because I cant afford it. So now I will be paying for something I dont use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,659 ✭✭✭RoTelly

If it is coming from revenue only tax payer will be paying, the problem is they have no way to protest or boycott.

It is very hard to deliver a protest against RTÉ in terms of audience, I'd love to see everyone abandon the Rose Of Tralee but I know it will largely do as well as normal.

It's gas that you say you're paying for something you don't use...

    I'll trump that for ya...

I don't have Saorview or any of that coming into the house. I watch my TV on the web. I wanted to watch the women's football on the RTE player but couldn't because live view isn't supported on the RTE player app on the TV. So I go upstairs to the PC and watch it on that, and it doesn't load cause everyone is using it, and it's completely overloaded. (The ads load fine mind you!)

So I'm being forced to pay for something I can't use/doesn't work.

    It's an absolute joke.

Can you imagine Netflix and Disney+ having the performance of the RTE player, they'd be out of business in the week.

As pointed out also that much of this news is from outside news outlets, RTÉ news is currently on holiday.

Did the Washington correspondent report on Trump or on Hawaii or make an report this month or last for that matter?

RTÉ reported on Lucy Letby case, but where was their London Correspondent? Genuine questions, I be surprised if either were reporting right now.

I understand that they only have 1 correspondent but they do have an international news desk and as I have stated before RTÉ News is on holliers.

It is regardless of the context of these news report or their "cause célèbre".

    FFS

The Hawaii fires are unprecedented, thousands of homes destroyed, over 800 people still missing.

In Canada an entire city of 20,000 people had to be evacuated.

Earlier we had fires on the Greek islands which meant thousands of holidaymakers including Irish evacuated from their resorts, thousands of others flown home early, thousands more had their holiday cancelled.

But no, not news, not compared to a bit of gorse 🙄

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

Any indication as to when RTÉ will announce its autumn line up? I guess that the revealing of the content of the autumn schedule will be toned down for obvious reasons but I'm astonished that there's been no announcement yet.

Also the fact (which had been reported months ago, and I had posted here) that they spent 70k on last years autumn launch and then at the oireachtas it was reveal that similar sums had been used for previous launch .... pay for though ... the barter account!

I wonder if the RDS is available this year?

Yep decision made not to have a party for the autumn launch Patrick Kielty to be providing interviews to the press as he takes over the licence fee.

Press forgetting to mention how much the spent on previous launch parties, I think it was €70k last when they were at the RDS.

They still have to make an announcement, albeit a low-key one.

Wouldn't be hard to guess the Autumn line up.

    Last years Autumn launch 25/08/22

    Flinging money around like confetti

According to The Irish Times Article on TG4 Autumn Launch RTÉ will be without a launch and it will be just a press release and Patrick Keilty will be available for Interview.

This is RTE kite flying, and it doesn't look like it is going to happen as easily as you think. Politicians are briefing against it, there's a good chance of a cross party revolt if this is introduced.

"One minister said: 'Are they for real, are they seriously suggesting that we impose the TV equivalent of water charges in the run-up to a general election?'"

Another one said: 'If we do this in 2024 the public would be infuriated. There would be a political revolt if this was attempted. Bringing in the equivalent of Local Property Tax would be political madness.'

    These are ministers, not backbenchers.

When most of us say "social justice" we mean equality under the law opposition to prejudice, discrimination and equal opportunities for all. When Social Justice Activists say "social justice" they mean an emphasis on group identity over the rights of the individual, a rejection of social liberalism, and the assumption that unequal outcomes are always evidence of structural inequalities.

If they want my vote they will suspend every manager and executive in RTÉ.

Something is going to give. They have borrowings of 95 million,100 million is their limit apparently.

They either have a everything must go sale or get a massive bailout. I'd bet on the latter.

One thing I will say is that the Director seems to be be taking no crap.

Kevin Bakhurst wasn't afraid to dump Tubs and he's pretty much stated publicly that he will avoid doing business with Noel Kelly. I think he's going to spend the next month or two getting the lay of the land and then the axe is going to fall.

What he saves on presenters wages might look good, but won't amount to a fart in the wind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,659 ✭✭✭RoTelly

He's been in RTÉ before he knows the lay of the land, no honeymoon period Dee had 7 years, his honey moon period ended the week after he arrived. Good luck to him.

What I am fearing the most is that the RTE would introduce some kind of license fee everyone has to pay, regardless if they have a TV or Radio or not.

    Some EU countries do that.

In practical life this causes lot's of discussions and strong different opinions, and feels like something is forced down one's throat. It feels like some forced contribution to some church or religion one doesn't believe in, whilst others see it as a necessary idea to fund public sector broadcasting.

The thing is, that newspapers aren't funded that way, and are often more informative anyway.

Stick it on the household charge is the most painfully obvious way of doing it. Apartments would have to be covered somehow I suppose.

Don't see why RTE should get all or most of it though. VM and Newstalk do a comparable or superior job of public broadcasting. Funding for public service broadcasting on the basis of merit seems sensible.
