The RSA got rightly slated for this tweet

Irish Cycle did a long thread as a response on the urban makeup of Ballina where the RSA is based and how poor the pedestrian and cycling infrastructure is. The icing on the cake is this one below where pedestrian access to the RSA is locked

The thread starts from this tweet for those interested

A lad knocked off the bike in Cork, taken to hospital with numerous injuries. As for the actions of the Gardai, surely it can't be SOP to allow someone involved in a hit & run to just head on after a chat

The full content of the reddit post is below

Hi from a bed in the Mercy.

Got knocked down while I was cycling to work along the Douglas Road yesterday morning. Felt like something like this was coming for a long time given the state of driving in Cork nowadays as well as the attitude of the Gardaí.

I have a broken collarbone in two places, ligament damage plus fractured wrist, and ligament damage in my leg.

I was in primary position avoiding parked cars. The driver(White Mercedes CLK) that hit me tried to overtake with oncoming cars, misjudged and went through me instead. I was doing about 30km/h at the time. They failed to stop but came back five/ten minutes later when the Gardaí and ambulance were on the scene and tried to claim I was "in the middle of the road". Gardaí let them go home, which shocked me considering what happened in Carrigaline last week. I was pretty angry and they said there wasn't much they could do.

Gardaí have yet to provide wife with much details or the drivers insurance.

I have good footage of the collision but if anyone drove past the Douglas Road at around 08.10 yesterday morning that might have extra footage of anything before or after it'd be very helpful. I was on a red hybrid bicycle, I'm a big chunky lad, brown hair and bright blue jacket. Also had lights on at the time.

Thanks again to the few people that did stop and help, Absolute saints.

Doubt I'll ever be back on a bike on the road again given the injuries and the knock that my confidence has taken.

Small edit. Thanks for the messages and responses.

Will be getting a "Pulse" number from the Gardaí tomorrow, if I'm discharged that is. Was kept in for observation and waiting on scan results.

The driver was a lady in her late 40s. I know we all do it considering the car they were driving to assume it was a man.

I'm in good spirits. I think I have plenty of evidence and statements from witnesses so that's hopefully enough to pursue the driver for some sort of dangerous driving.

Will hopefully give an update in a few months, but completely unaware of how long these things take so could be longer.

Shocking. Unfortunately for him he's in for another shock when he discovers that dangerous driving is a crime and as it will be up to the Gardai to initiate (through the DPP) criminal charges, it'll almost certainly go nowhere. Hope he has better luck with a civil claim.

I generally have good experiences with drivers on the roads when you consider the sheer number you come into contact (not literally!) with on a 60/ 90 min commute. The good ones almost always outweigh the bad ones. People are generally decent - or at least there are more decent people than asshats. It's surprising though, given the attitude of so many in authority... Gardai, RSA etc etc. Constant victim blaming and fear mongering.

Muppets, but they're so car centric, it's sadly not surprising. Colleagues of mine did some contract R+D for them a few years back (just before Covid) and were made to drive from Waterford to Ballina on the ****-show that passes for roads between the two for a 30 minute meeting to discuss progress (not a kick-off or final presentation) that could easily have taken place online

Sobering (Post edited to remove clickbait link... )

"Figures from An Garda Síochána show that 112 people have died on the roads this year, an increase of 14 from this time last year and 28 compared to pre-pandemic figures for 2019.

The figures show that 41 drivers, 27 pedestrians, 22 passengers and 15 motorcyclists have died on Irish roads this year."

Given the previous post regarding the gardai allowing a driver to head off after effectively a hit and run, I just saw this...

    FFS!

That's an add for Aviva dressed up as a meaningful survey; its the opinion of 1000 random motorists.

I went looking for more information on this, and found this nugget, which may have passed me by over the summer:

Like WTF is an insurance company doing by even asking the question about whether cyclists should be banned?

Looks like I'll be finding a different insurer when I renew at Christmas...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,254 ✭✭✭Dr_Colossus

+1, a dangerous driving charge as rare as hen's teeth it appears when a cyclist is involved. Some shocking cases over the years downgraded and even dismissed.

The only such conviction I'm aware of recently is of the electrician who tailgated an unmarked garda car through the port tunnel in which no one was hurt or killed so where there's a will there's a way but that ethos still needs to be transferred to cases involving two wheel road users.

Oh, 100% agree. I was referring to the statistics really though. Particularly the figures for pedestrian deaths.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,216 ✭✭✭Paddigol

It seems to be getting more common - possibly driven by the likes of the Indo who seem to scour the internet for those kind of clickbait 'reports'. I should have just copied the relevant statistics rather than drive traffic to them.

Aviva have always given me crazy quotes compared to other insurers anyway, even when you volunteer for their gimmicks like "advanced driving course", "penalty points discounts" etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,216 ✭✭✭Paddigol

They were cheapest for me this year, but only after I went online and applied as a 'new customer'. Their renewal quote was higher than both my existing policy with them and the new quote I got online from them. The whole system is a scam. You waste hours every year dealing with insurance companies just for the sake of not getting ripped off.

    Very true.

That concrete has barely set, the works pictured in the tweet was only done in the last 3 months and now they tearing it up so as to add car stacking capacity for an additional 2/3 cars on the primary City bus corridor in Galway City.

They were the only realistic option for us with a learner driver for past two years. Thankfully, we’ve progressed past that stage.

It will b a long time before something like this comes in here...

Not a group I've heard of before, but a good article nonetheless

I've seen representatives doing a lot of presentations/panels and pushing for just transition and climate justice. They seemed to appear over Covid, or perhaps just became much more active.

Four more dead in Clonmel last night, including three Leaving Cert girls, following on from the dreadful Debs crash in Monaghan a few weeks back.

Without commenting on any particular incident, is seat belt use going out of fashion these days. Some of the recent incidents looked like the kind of crash that you'd be very likely to survive, even with significant injuries, if wearing a seat belt.

Re seat belts, I think you're probably correct. Several recent crashes should have been survivable, albeit with injury, given they were single vehicle.

There is also a worrying backlash against those calling for greater safety measures after such incidents by some, saying things akin to the gun lobby in the US - "Now is not the time... thoughts & prayers etc."

It is exactly the time to discuss...maybe a frank open discussion about the reasons these crashes occur (*cough* inappropriate speed *cough*) is required to prevent the next almost guaranteed fatal accident in the next 7 days, ruining another family.

The standard of safe driving has plummeted since covid restrictions lifted, in my experience.

I would agree that it would be a good time to discuss. However, there is a general reluctance to do so because of the fear of inconvenienced imposed as a result.

I was thinking earlier that even the iron man deaths generates far more of a reaction in terms of seeking change compared to any if the recent deaths on the road involving young adults and children. The Tainsite (I think) was wanting an inquiry into how the triathletes died. What did he say about the kids killed on the roads?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,174 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Sometimes I think we should just let people who are too stubborn to wear seatbelts write themselves off rather than fighting too hard against it. Though admittedly it's complicated as they often share cars with children or other people who haven't consented to being more severely injured because someone in the car didn't belt up.

Can you imagine the uproar and calls for action there'd be if a bunch of feuding gangsters had caused 155 deaths and almost 1300 serious injuries in 2022? I grew up in Donegal and have written here before about the toxic mix of speed and youthful sense of invulnerability that sees families - my own extended one and that of friends/neighbours included - left in mourning. Despite solutions in terms of higher barrier of entry/enforcement/actual consequences being achievable, there continues to be a malaise to do anything about it in official Ireland - the cynic in me looking at the correlation between voters and drivers. As for enforcement, I'll cut the Guards some slack and say that with the best will in the world it must be dispiriting to waste time bringing dangerous drivers to court only for them to produce some sob story and be let off with a slap on the wrist by some gimp of a judge.

I know little at this stage about the circumstances of the horrible tragedy in Clonmel, but what I've read sounds depressingly familiar, and my heart goes out to the families

Unfortunately, wasn't anything like a seven day reprieve. Another family devastated this morning. RIP. Only in his 40s.

Things won't change without proper enforcement, and that won't change without widespread use of technology and citizen footage/ portals that are actioned. All the incidents above asked for camera and dashcam footage, but try to report incidents using it...

Having seen how blatantly people ignored the bus/taxi only lane at Fairview park when it was under construction, and there was a detour that was like 5 mins if even, busconnects could be a massive failure unless they have cameras for enforcement.

At one stage the construction workers were trying to stop private cars from being in the lane, because the Gardai weren’t arsed to enforce it
