I think they're right to have no ego and waste money on a broadcast themselves when they can just use the world athletics feed.I guess when you aren't spending tax payers money you have to be economical in how you operate, something RTE have never cared about. It's great getting to see every event and no time wasted going back to the studio on pointless analysis and excessive buildup to the Irish competitors. Athletics isn't really a sport that lends itself to interesting discussions about it anyway (although I'd argue most sports talk is rubbish in general).

RTE have ruined the last couple of Olympics, I remember one of the years with the gymnastics they spent more time in the studio discussing it with some Irish one who was judge on the international gymnastics scene rather than just showing the competition.

Frankly, apart from Kipyegon who is almost a lock for gold, any one of 10 other women in that final could potentially medal.

The only woman who genuinely hasn’t a hope is the Italian girl Cavalli, who simply isn’t quick enough. Melissa Courtney Bryant from the UK is also highly unlikely to feature, but even she is in the mix in a sit-and-kick race.

Apart from Kipyegon, the other Africans are very young and inexperienced. Experience counts for a lot at this level. If the pace isn’t incredibly fast, they could be outfoxed by more experienced rivals like Muir, Mageean, or even somebody like Cory McGee, who know how to handle themselves in finals and are well capable of running a very quick, albeit not lightening fast time.

For instance, Welteji likes to front run. You can be sure she won’t have the luxury of dictating the pace in that final. I wouldn’t be surprised if she panicked, knowing that others are pulling the strings. Nobody is underestimating the task ahead of Mageean, but personally I don’t think she’ll be miles away from the podium.

A lot of it is rubbish , "stating the bleeding obvious" ,buildup and hype , drama , celebration etc.

BBC isn't great now either overall, studio is poor enough imo

Some sports especially the technical sports for example Snooker and Moto GP are more suited to analysis and commentary

Yes, I'm well aware of that but you are ignoring the mile from Monaco, in reality, there's pretty much a second separating all of them. And Ciara is in much better shape than you are giving her credit for.

Let me give you an example. Tonight's semi final is very comparable to last years Commonwealth final. The splits are very close. Muir beat Mageann in that race by a decent margin just a week after winning bronze at World's in low 3:55. The were both at 700 in 1:58 and Muir finished in 4:02(Mageann in 4:04). Tonight, Ciara went through 700 in 2:00 yet still managed to finish in 4:02 despite the slower opening 700m and this is in the semis, not a final(a near 2 second faster last 800 off a very similar opening, Ciara is on a different level again this year.

Ciara has also beat Muir in her last 2 diamond league races within the last 6 weeks. Welteji just pipped Mageean in Stockholm 6 weeks ago in the diamond league. Does that mean she will beat them, no but she's right in there with them and very much at their level. And I honestly don't think Hassan is as foregone conclusion that everyone thinks, she's years removed from her peak 1500 days and I believe she's vulnerable here. She could prove me wrong but I don't think she's as far ahead of the rest of the field(omitting Kipyegon) as everyone thinks especially with a 10,000 already in her legs.

Its a hard final to call for the places but Ciara is definitely in that contender bracket imo.

I had actually forgotten about the mile and the 1500m split which was used as ammunition against me a few weeks ago as well 😁

I know the entire population of Boards dont like to hear it but all of the Africans and Muir have a better PB than Ciara and if they run all out and PB then she'll be left behind.

Then again Hassan and Muir may be tired, you never know and if that was the case then she could possibly be up against just three other Africans.

But if it is tactical then Laura or Katie could as easily out perform her as well.

I almost sound like I dont want her to win a medal lol.

Its not true, I love Ciara and want her to win.

No I wasnt ignoring the mile at all. I had forgotten about it, thats all.

Still even with that, all the Africans and Muir have a better PB than her. As I said in an earlier post before your original reply which you obviously ignored 😁 I think she could possibly beat Snowden and Muir if they're tired. She may even beat Hassan depending on how Hassan is feeling but Hassan finished well today so shes still very much in the mix.

She still has three other Africans

The final is definitely hugely competitive but I get the feeling from Ciara that she really fancies it and thinks she can smash the NR to pieces if she has to. In today's semi, she kept glancing up at the screen in the final home straight, suggesting she had a load of petrol in the tank and that she can go much faster in the final if necessary.

She'll have to smash it big time, after todays semi the winning time for the final is going to be brutal. I doubt it will be tactical with all the fast finishers in that group.

Tbf though, there's not giant differences in their PBs. Kipyegon and Hassan's PBs are miles ahead so if they run to their ability, she's no chance of beating them, but it's really only a second or so between 3rd to 7th/8th. It's not impossible that a 3.55 mark here gets bronze which is within Mageean's range based on the mile this year, and with how well she looked in the semi.

It might suit her if it’s fast but I wouldn’t rule her out if the pace is slow either. I’m pretty sure all of her European medals have come from slower paces?

She’s just an excellent championship racer and I agree it’s premature to right her off. She has been cruising in the last couple of rounds.

Only reason I say it’s tough is because of how stacked the event is, but Ciara is right there with them and she’s talking like it’s Kipyegon out front barring a disaster but everything else is up for grabs

I don't think Ciara will get a medal but I think she'll run 3:56... The field is just class, she's unlucky in that way but if the front 2 run away with it, she might sneak a bronze.

Just on Muir I wouldn't be focusing too much on her PB. She changed her coaching set up this year and has seen mixed success to her season. You could argue that her best race of the year was in Monaco when she took down the British mile record and that was a race where she was well beaten by Mageean.

Clitheroes influence really has seen her kick on to new heights and she has an utter belief that hasn't been seen previously in her career

Yeah we were discussing that topic a few weeks ago. She ran well yesterday though so we can't discount her plus she usually shows up at big events.

Finally lost it with the brutal Virgin app and bought a Discovery+ subscription for a month (€6.99). Athletics in glorious HD! Playback controls are a bit crap though.

Terrestrial TV reception very weather dependent where I am.

Yes, interesting to see how hard she decides to run it - does she really go for it to lay down a marker to her rivals or just try and qualify and keep her cards close to her chest. All will be revealed after 8pm.

Bit ridiculous scheduling. Only an hour between the semis here and the final tonight. Men had 2 and a half hours between theirs. These semis should have been a bit earlier tonight

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,896 ✭✭✭Trampas

Asher smith didn’t dip. Stride looked a bit off at end

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,137 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Was thinking the same. 110 hurdles have couple hours between semi and final. Not sure that was ever case for hurdles semi to final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,430 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

But she just about squeezed through. VM2 commentator reckoned there was something wrong with her in the last few metres alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,074 ✭✭✭✭titan18

Ya, both of those semis should just have been the first two events tonight really. At least give them some time to reset themselves.
