Should RTE stop airing Father Ted?

Father Ted co-creator Graham Linehan has had a comedy gig cancelled in Scotland due to his opinion.

Given the government are desperate to pass this new hatespeech legislation, which will render Linehan's opinion illegal, should RTE stop airing Father Ted?

    Proposed legislation:

A referendum is needed on the legislation more than anything else brought to the public in the last 50 years.

That would be an ecumenical question.

No. And the claims in the OP are conspiracy theory bollocks.

What's graham saying that's inciting hatred or violence?

    No.

    Saying that Linehans a dickhead.

He's saying some insensitive stuff but he's not inciting hatred or violence.

I think the the whole Graham Linehan thing is a bit nuts... He basically got told to "give over" but kept going. And it was then put to him "Is this the hill you wanna die on?" and he said "yeah" and it's cost him everything.

I'm amazed he even briefly found a place to host him in the first place.

Usually people who write comedy are quite clever/sharp. I still can't believe he went down this route. Like could he not have just kept his opinions to himself and just made the few bob and retired.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR write some comedy about it?

His “fault” is that he basically agrees with JK Rowling on gender issues, and has said so. That’s it. And now some people want to punish him by not airing a show that he wrote 25 years ago.

Seems he wanted to try and tap into the lucrative grift market but immediately made a mess off it. Then he just kept accidentally parodying himself daily as he still tried to make a grift name for himself.

His last few years have been somewhat of a comedy tbf.

Specifically, what is he saying in the Father Ted scripts that is inciting hatred or violence?

Even if he were to say something at another time or in another medium that fell foul of the new legislation, the new legislation would only apply to that utterance. There's nothing in it that could lead anyone to conclude that everything Linehan had ever written on any subject at any time was legally problematic.

I'd be more looking at The IT Crowd for something to get upset about.

He tweets mad stuff about trans people and leabians every 5 minutes. Absolute lunatic. Ruined his life for this cause that has nothing to do with him. He's toxic and no one wants anything to do with him, not a good look to be involved with this sort of nut job. He made his own mess it's not some anti free speech woke conspiracy.

I remember one Christmas day before his wife left him he spent the whole day tweeting every 2 minutes about trans stuff, he's properly nuts.

No and well done to Linehan for doing what he thinks is right. He has as much right to his viewpoint as anybody else.

Amnesty International’s new investigation shows that Israel imposes a system of oppression and domination against Palestinians across all areas under its control: in Israel and the OPT, and against Palestinian refugees, in order to benefit Jewish Israelis. This amounts to apartheid as prohibited in international law.

Thats why they keep referencing Father Ted/Harry Potter. Their "logic" appears to be that since FT/HP aren't phobic then nothing Lenihan/Rowling do can be called phobic.

I think in this case it may be the other way around. Linehan is currently being denied a venue to say anything at all — he is being deplatformed. At the moment that's by popular demand, so to speak, but they are trying to suggest that if the law passes he will be deplatformed by law.

(Which he won't be, of course.)

Par for the course for that poster then.

To the question, let the OP point to the elements of Fr Ted that could fall under this proposed legislation.

I suggest they will not be able to find anything

He never breached the act in Fr Ted, or anywhere else.

    So no.

Lenihans life fell apart when he got sucked into an all consuming obsession which alienated him from his family and friends, he then became embraced by a weird Internet cult who reinforced his belief that his obsession matters and he's on a valiant crusade, and now the only people who like him and want to be around him are those cult members.

It could have happened with believing in any conspiracy theory. He's now to comedy as David Icke is to Footballers

Nobody's gonna censor the footage of Icke playing in goals, but nobodys gonna hire him as a goalkeeping coach or football pundit anymore

I wish RTE would air something other than 20+ year old shows repeated endlessly!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,731 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

Father Ted is the only good thing on RTE apart from sport and reeling in the years so keep airing it, I'd watch it when it's on.

Linehans general viewpoints I do agree with but he has gone too far to be taken seriously anymore. But then again, so has the whole trans movement. They are pushing too hard for inclusion, grand you think you're a man in a woman's body or whatever but the sporting arena is a joke with men competing in women's events, just to get their point across, time to go away.

Yes , believing that women can’t have a penis is now a conspiracy theory , the man is in dangerous company there

    its linehan by the way

No, not a chance it should be stopped.

Down with this sort of thing!
