I don't know. But I do know that when Nucifora was a head coach he didn't release videos criticising refs under a pseudonym, deny it and then get banned for a year.

I suspect COS potentially would be in the media more, but his appearances are not almost entirely terrible so its less of an issue.

Rassie's attitudes and behaviour, and the type of culture they promote is not something I'd want anywhere near Irish rugby, tbh.

nash, blade, coombes, osbourne and Threadwell all released back to their provinces.

that must be coombes RWC squad chances gone

And loughman is retained.. 38 man squad now with 5 to be dropped. Interesting Conan not released so must not be too bad.

Conmans been doing some trainig without the boot.

Prendergast retained is the big story. Seems to be winning that race to that back row spot.

also, McCarty over Threadwell looks likely now, which isnt really a surprise, to me anyway.

I feel for Osborne. Was having a brilliant season and excelling in European competition at just 21. That injury in Six Nations camp really disrupted his progress. Think he would have travelled to the WC if he stated fit.

So five players to be cut. Looking at it you’ll have a loose head and a hooker for certain in the pack. You’ll also have a back three in earls or stockdale go.

So looks like a battle for two of McCarthy, Prendergast, Frawley and McCloskey to get the last two spots

That's massively disappointing, especially in the context of lads who've had lesser seasons being retained. Bit annoyed that Coombes and Osbourne won't get a game , 2 of our most promising players.

With the reduced squad I think the team for sunday  will be:

    Porter, Sheehan, Bedhlam

    Bierne, Ryan

    Pom, Doris, VDF

    JgP, Byrne

    Aki, Ringrose

    Hansen, Keenan, Earls

Kelleher, Healy, Furlong, mccarthy Baird/prendergast, Murray, Crowley, Frawley/Henshaw

Prendergast can be saved by his ability to play 6/7/8....

but main chance for him is to find his Leinster Academy jersey and pretend he only lost his track in the West for a moment😅

    If anyone likes the tables:

    image.png

Of the 5 to be cut, 3 are fairly nailed on:

    One of Stewart / Herring

    One of Kilcoyne / Loughman

One of Frawley / Byrne / Crowley

    Then it's more 2 from McCarthy / Prendergast / McCloskey / Stockdale / Earls.

Osbourne has barely played after the Christmas period. I was surprised he was even apart of the 44 man squad. Only there for experience in my view

Can't see how or why Frawley would be named in the replacements. Henderson instead of McCarthy.

Threadwell always seamed out of place

Farrell cut him for good reason

Treadwell has always been a fairly average player who is capable of the odd exceptional performance, and has picked up probably more Ireland caps than his level merited due to the lack of high quality alternatives that existed for a long time.

He was the definition of the best-of-the-rest, the least-worst bench option. But now that McCarthy exists Ireland can move on.

Fair, but he showed a lot more prior to injury than Earls or Stockdale have this season imo. His spot was deserved, but injury cost him. Really surprised that Coombes isn't even getting a game. He must have really been out of sorts in camp. Not that anyone is owed a go, but we still haven't seen him play in anything close to a starting calibre team

Yes, I already said that I couldn't see the IRFU having him on a short list because of his criticism of refs but then you went on about how Nucifora hasn't been in the media much since his appointment as if that's some sort of requirement.

I assume the IRFU would want someone qualified and doesn't bring them into disrepute with World Rugby

He could never stitch a run of decent performances together

I didn't "go on about" anything. I'm merely stating that being a step away from dealing with refs and citing commissioners is a bit irrelevant if you have a habit of involving yourself in these things publicly anyway. Erasmus is the antithesis of Nucifora in terms of personality it would appear.

I had Coombes to start at 8 this weekend so am surprised. Osbourne, Nash, and Stewart seem to be only in the squad as future prospects although Stewart was impressive against Italy. Also, Osbourne in any picture/videos I've seen from camp looks well strapped on his right knee.

And when you see the likes of Ahern, Edogbo, Murray at the very least down the line I'd say unfortunately his Ireland career may be over now.

I'm surprised too, not least because the (presumed) travelling squad are in line for a lot of minutes in the warm ups which is unexpected.

Yea, it makes last week's team look even older tbh. How does Coombes not even get a game on the bench?

Hopefully next season will see Osbourne,. Nash and the rest get another chance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,269 ✭✭✭Must love hardship

It's not the world cup final.. its an opportunity to have a look at 1 or 2 lads who are on the edge of making the final squad of 33.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,050 ✭✭✭almostover

Very disappointed to see Coombes dropped from the squad without even getting a single minute in a warm up game. Had an outstanding 2nd half of the year with Munster and has really added to his game since a poor outing v the Maori last November. Don't think he'd have made the 33 regardless with Doris and Conan ahead of him but it seems very harsh to cut him loose without even giving him a chance. Conan seems to be recovering OK but the backrow is likely where most injuries due to attrition will occurr. Coombes can play 8, 6 and 4, albeit 4 is a push. Weird one.

I'm uncomfortable in general about the backrow selection. Not sure that Prendergast will make it either given Beirne and Baird are good 6s. Why not gives Coombes a go off the bench this weekend? We know what Prendergast can do, he's primarily a 6 and behind POM, Doris, Beirne and Baird for that position.

We're also expecting JvdF to not get injured, only proper no.7 in the squad. We've always looked far worse when POM plays 7. Wasn't convinced by Doris at 7 either, he had a good game but played more as a 6. Hodnett too unproven at this level but again had a stellar 2nd half of the season with Munster.

Anyway hope it all works out either way.....

im not surprised, squad was picked after the 6 nations, and the guys in charge get a carte-blanche after 6 nations and NZ results.

suck it up munster fans, and lets see what happens. Go green leinster.

But surely IF the IRFU are thinking of signing him they must feel he's the right man and that his media duties/interactions can be curtailed just like Nucifora's was.

Like we don't hear or see too much from the CEO either

Irish Rugby seem to have a way of just getting on with the job and leave media stuff to the team coaches and provincial coaches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,030 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Most disappointed for Coombes out of that quintet. He's had some brilliant performances over the last 2 years, and especially so since November after Munster's poor start to the season.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 34,080 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

I don't for a second think they are thinking of signing him or have ever considered him. The man is incapable of staying away from the media or controversy.

I think the coaches are making far fewer decisions based on the warm up games then we think. I'd say most decisions were made before the squad was announced and lot more in training.

I am quite surprised though, was convinced he would get a run out this weekend.
